Buckeye Snowflakes

  1. Welp. Oregon was impressive despite not having their best player. They played really well.
  2. Stroud has a lot of learning ahead. Even though the stat sheet shows he threw for nearly 500 yards, he needs a bit more experience before he’s big-game ready. Many throws were high and missed open targets. He’s still WIP.
  3. Failed 4th down attempts missed out on several more potential points. Being in plus territory, if they convert on even one or two of their three failed 4th down attempts, there are likely more points on the board.
  4. Oregon won the line play both sides of the ball; the O-line was consistently getting push, the RB could fall forward for 4 yards. OSU’s O-line did not get the same push. This is the most disappointing part of all.
  5. We all knew going into the season that the back 7 on OSU’s defense was a huge question mark. But when even the few experienced players are hurt (Banks missed both games, Proctor left hurt both games, Brown didn’t play first game and played dinged up and eventually left the 2nd game), the entire back 7 is playing freshmen/inexperienced players. It will take the duration of the season for the back 7 to get quality game experience.
  6. There’s a lot of season ahead. This loss does not hinder aspirations for the B1G championship. This could be a learning opportunity like the VaTech game was in 2014; that team (also led by a freshman QB) gelled midseason.
  7. OSU has become a clone of Oklahoma. (Who else can lose despite 612 total yards of offense?)

You aren't worthy of any greater effort than that. BuckeyeChuck is a respected poster that most of us like, including me. You're a sparty troll feeling your oats by chiming in on a post that has nothing to do with your team. Take it back to RCMB or wherever. Andrel Anthony and Rayshaun Benny say hello.

I thought Stroud played really well today. It’s hard to argue with his and the WR’s performance. Admittedly, though, the playcslling was pretty unbalanced. I’m surprised how little they used Henderson in the second half, when it appeared the D Line was wearing down…

I am shocked by how bad Coombs has been though! The defense just frankly looked bad: slow, soft, etc. They talked a LOT and got smoked the whole game.

I don’t know who OSU may lose to in the conference, but this is not the championship-level team we’ve seen the past few decades.

Reasonable take B.Chuck. Like some on this board, I haven't watched OSU play since 2019. I am baffled by their D's back 7. I guess mid-season Coombs' becomes more of a "co-DC"?

Not going to get all that excited about a Buckeye loss. Playcalling was too aggressive and this will be a rough practice week.

No one in the BIG will pull off today's result. Hold the party until UM finally takes care of business in the game.

Oregon was also missing Justin Flowe as well as some other defensive players I believe.  To me the various losses on the two teams seemed to easentially cancel each other out.

Lots of miscues by osu and yet Oregon was in control the entire game it seemed.  Oregon was the better more physical team while missing their star defensive player and a second starter.  What a job by that Oregon staff.

Stroud missed many plays, reads.  The pick on another overthrow is what he is known for.  The sack with no timeouts unforgivable.  Lol….

Olave going for the pi call instead of the ball was just unforgivable as well…. Add that to the list on him.  Ovey Olave, wrong way Olave…..

Maybe I’m getting soft in my old age, but I like BuckeyeChuck. Solid post. I didn’t turn the game on until midway through the 3rd but from what I saw, they are just inexperienced and aren’t in mid season form in week 2, just like 90% of the rest of college football teams.

On point 3; Pat Day overestimated his offense's ability to convert. Day also underestimated his opponent, Oregon. They weren't chump change. Those 4th conversion attempts could have cost the Buckeyes the game.

GO DUCKS!

This may sound like a stretch but how it is a team that beat Minnesota on the road the past two seasons then loses at home the next week? Don't beat Minnesota on the road-is there some kind of curse winning in Minneapolis the week before?

I am sure by end of season, OSU will have everyone healthy and will be running like a clock. The SEC will chew up it's own so OSU will be back in the top 4.

Also, was that a neutral official crew? Didn't they know that a holding or PI call must be made every 6 downs against an opponent?

4 years into Ryan Day, this is now his team, meaning that it is an Air Raid first team, completing the transition from Urban’s Power Spread team.

this is not to say they’re worse, or better, simply that this is a different team than the Buckeyes of late. They will definitely progress as Stroud gains experience. Will be interested to see how this team will look in November.

It seems like you’re being intentionally obtuse. Your comment has nothing to do with his original post, which specifically says OSU may not necessarily be better or worse…obviously Day had crushed it. Nobody is denying that, so I’m not sure why you’re posting like this.

Meant to reply to somebody else, but I’ll just say that OSU still has a ton of weapons and Moorhead knows how to design an offense, that’s for sure. Would’ve loved him here.

Watching the game, your linebackers were as problematic as your maligned secondary.

Rather surprised that the adjustments were so limited by Coombs. I find it difficult to believe he wouldn't have more installed?

Game has some very strange overall stats.

OSU got 612 yards and only 28 points? Despite outgaining the Ducks by 107 yards, Oregon had control of this game just throughout and it felt like if anything, it was Oregon who outgained Ohio State. Also weird. But if just a couple of things go differently, Ohio State could've won.

It doesn't seem like as bad of a loss as the Virginia Tech one in 2014 but time will tell how good Oregon is (that VA Tech team in 2014 turned around and lost to their next opponent, if I remember right). It feels like the OSU defense has more fundamental, championship-killing issues than any OSU unit of 2014 though.

Hope it doesn't annoy y'all too much that I posted here! I've lurked here a lot but never really posted much before. I've attended both schools in this rivalry and have a deep appreciation for it. The 11W posters (not the guys who write the columns but the general public) are just too apoplectic/unreasonable after a day like today to be around.

You lose sometimes. I was surprised Oregon was that good today but it happens and the Bucks can grow from this.

Good luck with Washington (on right now, but I'm still kind of mad at the world for the OSU loss so I may not watch). Who are we kidding, I probably will. Anyways, go get 'em!

Ryan Day has been lauded for being a great game coach, but I've never seen much other than an air raid system that makes things simple for superior talent, and that's mostly enough. The thing about football is that teams are always adapting and catching up. They're still talented, but the gap has shrunk (especially on defense) and they don't look like an especially physical team.

If you squint you can see Michigan trying to mash their face in and limit the number of possessions in a game, keeping things tight to the finish.

One point that is absent here is that Minnesota looked like trash against Miami of Ohio today.

All signs are pointing to the possibility that while this OSU team will be good (how can they not be with 22 5 star players) they might not be playoff level this season.
