Brendan Quinn on Beilein/Pistons: It could actually happen

Submitted by LS And Play on

Quinn is pretty connected to the Beilein camp and seems to think there is genuine interest from both sides. He goes into further detail in a piece for the Athletic.

1) This ain't about John Beilein leveraging for more money.
2) The Pistons are quite serious about Beilein
3) This could actually happen.

That and much more, here:https://t.co/m60AIgeBfU

Lol at people being surprised a coach would want ot coach in the nba. Its the highgest level, its what everyone in basketball aspires to. Every college coach will at least listen when called by an nba team.

I miss all the fire Beilein people - ohh where have you gone:)? In all seriousness I hope he stays. I believe ultimately the ability to teach kids to become players is a huge draw for him making this fairly moot. If he did jump however, Yaklich becoming the coach and Patrick Beilein an assistant? Interesting.... Ok I want the master here and I know Warde wants to get him to 4.5 and the assistants to 500 grand. BQ is both right and wrong - it’s money and challenge. One of those problems can be solved or at least that’s what donors have been told. The other can’t. If he leaves - it’s not for the money.

Comeon Quinn, get real. I thought you were sharper than this. This is all about leveraging for more money. Beilein is not going to the NBA. He's not an NBA coach. I don't ever pipe up unless I'm right. Usually, I'm fucking right on the stuff I chime in on. I'm right on this too. You'll see.

1. There are so many bad contracts that he would be stuck with this crew of misfits for at least a couple seasons.  No way they can compete with Boston and Philly with so much money tied into Griffin, Drummond and Jackson.

2. This team can't do any of the things Beilein likes.  They can't space the floor properly with Griffin and Drummond on the court at the same time.  Reggie Jackson can't shoot the 3.

3. Gores is one of the worst owners in professional sports.  He shows up drunk to games and makes an ass of himself.  He only comes to handful of games.  Oh, and look at how he botched the GM and head coaching search.  Hire a GM, then let the GM pick his coach.  Don't do it in reverse or concurrently.

If Beilein leaves, I'll be surprised because he usually makes smart, well thought out decisions.  Plus Beilein shouldn't be in the same conversation as Gores.

Honestly, I find the idea of a 24-second shot clock to be a major issue for Beilein's system as well. He had to change his system up when college went from 35 to 30. I'm not saying that he couldn't do it, but it would take a season or 2. Then, throw in the fact that he's not going to be the GM and have full control over the roster, which he'd probably want in order to implement his system. It just seems like he'd be at least 2-3 years away from a playoff contender in every aspect.
