Breakdown Sports: Michigan State vs Michigan

Submitted by Space Coyote on

I've compiled numerous links that look at both Michigan and MSU going into the match up this weekend. Along with Ace's Fee Fi Fo, they give you a lot of the info you may want to know about each team going into tomorrow.

Just this morning, I also posted a link about how MSU defends Power O, and why we may not see it much again this Saturday, just as we didn't see it much against Northwestern

My subjective thoughts on the game are below, for those interested.

If I'm being honest, I think Michigan has looked better than MSU so far this year, especially in the last few weeks, and understand why they are favored going into Saturday. What worries me for them, is that I think MSU matches up really well with Michigan.

1. MSU is an aggressive defense that looks to force turnovers, while Michigan is more of an offense that wants to work it's way down field. They big play aspect of Michigan is lessened, and MSU can attack and try to force turnovers.
2. MSU's DL is still very good, Michigan has to establish the ability to run outside the tackles to open up the rest of their offense, and they've had issues targeting outside the tackles so far.
3. Michigan's rushing attack can still attack some of the weaknesses in MSU's defensive backfield, but it won't be to the degree some other schemes do. And unless Michigan can accomplish #2, #3 becomes much more difficult for them to come by.
4. MSU "wrong arms" kick blocks, something that has given Michigan trouble this year when trying to run Power. (Writing an article on this this week)
5. Cook can hit all the passes, and MSU WRs can turn it on. That can loosen what Michigan does up front.
6. If MSU has it's starters back, they can identify targets enough to keep the defense honest with the run game, this gives them the ability to hit some intermediate throws that are available against Michigan's D.

One huge thing in Michigan's favor right now: special teams. In a game that could be difficult to move the ball and finish drives, special teams should be essential. I think the special teams of Michigan offsets the turnover concerns a bit. But special teams guys are weird, guys can turn it on and have great games out of no where, so who knows.

I think schematically, with what both teams strengths and weaknesses are, MSU matches up really well. That's what concerns me the most for UM. Michigan I think is playing better, and I agree with what at least one MSU writer has been saying, that MSU isn't simply holding everything back just for Michigan (if they were, they would have started sprinkling it in to give Michigan more things to have to scout and account for). This is going to be a hell of an interesting match up on Saturday.

On injuries: injuries are legit, they are reasons, though not excuses. No one cares about your injuries but your team, but to act like they don't matter is illogical (think Michigan basketball this last year). Of course they matter, and MSU has been hit really hard by them this year. Conklin I expect to be back, but how much rust does he have and how many snaps can he play? Kieler I think they needed to knock off rust last week, but he in no way looked ready to be back; I wonder if last week actually set him back and he isn't as far along for Michigan. Missing Allen would really hurt for communication up front; Michigan stunts a ton, and while I like B. Allen, Jack is the one that does by far the most communication. I don't think any of those starters will be 100%, but getting them back is essential for getting the communication down and at least giving your schemes a chance; otherwise MSU is forced to simplify their schemes or else face potential protection busts (similar to Michigan in 2013, though likely not to that degree). Price I think will be back pretty much the whole way, but they need time up front to find him; I expect one of the UM safeties to be on him much of the game, not a LB.

As far as Michigan injuries, this is the game where Mario O. being hurt scares me. I thought RJS looked good last week, but Mario was much better setting the edge because he's much stronger and better fundamentally as an edge player (something RJS hasn't had to do much in his career). Smith isn't 100%, he could give 25 carries on Saturday or 5 carries, you just got to put him out there and get what you can out of him. Same supposedly with Johnson. I don't think Green is 100% either (no player is, but Green has been dealing with a little thigh injury of some sort the last two weeks). This is probably the first week since Utah that Ross was really needed, will be interesting to see if MSU goes with heavier formations to try to force Michigan out of the nickel.

Things to watch: Watch to see how Michigan adjusts in the run game. I expect some small changes with how they run Power to account for the wrong arming. The pitch counter will either be huge loss or huge gain play, risky play call against MSU and they haven't been running it well. Michigan needs a counter for this game, and I expect Counter F and the influence runs to be utilized fairly heavily as Michigan starts trapping guys up front. Similarly, the quick hitting Inside Zone we saw against Northwestern would be a good way to attack MSU with speed before MSU can fill down, really putting a lot of pressure on the safeties in their run/pass fits. Think that's how Michigan hits between the tackles, need to find something to get outside the tackles in the run game. Run game takes away turnover chances, really plays into Michigan's hands.

On the other side, watch for double slants, and watch for a lot of switch vertical. Switch vertical has been MSU's go to deep pass for the past three years, and I don't see that changing this week. How will Michigan defend the slot, will they switch (they have been doing that more this year, but MSU tends to threaten vertical on the snap, so may not be able to communicate that as easily) or will they lock on? If they lock on, look for MSU to try to get some match ups, either AB on Peppers or Kings on Peppers if Lewis is following AB around. How MSU schemes to play the match ups with the DBs is what I think is essential for keeping Michigan honest on defense, and therefore will be essential for their ability to move the ball.

Should be a good game. As I've said previously, five or six plays swinging from one team to the other can essentially change any game or at least make any game competitive. Which team wins those five or six key plays will likely come away with the victory between two teams that match up quite interestingly. I really have no feel for this game. Michigan has been playing better, but MSU has the talent, it's there, we've seen that. Injuries could be key on both sides, as could rust and just the idea of who steps up and plays well under pressure in this game; and if someone jumps out to a decent lead it could be too much for the other team to overcome. Really interesting matchup.

But I wanted to keep the OP a bit more objective, and let the comments work their way into the subjective portion. More of a "present the facts" and then talk about what they may mean. I dunno, that was just my thinking going into this post.

But other people have been putting up some great stuff in the diary section, doesn't seem right to push them off for what is essentially me advertising my links. I dunno, I appreciate the fact that I can post links to my blog on this site and it's not taken down, so I'll probably leave my thoughts consolidated on this one, especially because I haven't been contributing nearly as much as I have in the past (to the joy of some I'm sure).

Great breakdown.

I have to find a way to work today but 3:30 tomorrow is calling....

Also Gameday in AA which I am using as a valid excuse to drink all day.

This staff is great and the previous staff pooped iron pyrite, but this meme has to die. The answer to a line that cannot execute your base plays is not to give them more plays to execute. To expect them to block the counters and wrinkles isn't realistic. Hammer the coaches for not getting them to execute, but don't act like the past two teams were just a few playcalling tweaks away from winning.

Agree with much of your thoughts.  UM is the better team right now but if you built a team to take advantage of potential weaknesses of UM, MSU has those tools.  And MSU's 1 glaring weakness (outside of special teams) is UM's main weakness; passing deep.

To me the keys are making MSU 1 dimensional on offense which I think is very plausible.  Stuff the run.  Don't let Scott make big plays in the run.  Then turn it over to Cook.  I think he is a NFL QB but this is by far the toughest D he has played as well - MSU has really played an array of garbage defenses.  So it will be a shock to his system just as this D (or at least front 7) might be to UMs.   Then if Lewis can take out Burbridge i.e. 4 catches for 42 yds or whatnot Cook is forced to go to secondary receivers and TEs.  How healthy is Price? He is their big weapon of TEs.  Will a guy like Lyles surprise and get a lot of catches?  Can Stribling cover Kings?  Its a sort of game a guy that we dont think of (everyone is thinking of Burbridge or Scott) could get yds for MSU as we take away their strengths.

So if we hold MSU to 17-21 pts what can our offense do vs their D.  I expect multiple TEs to stress their LBs and open up their rush D.  Most teams use passes out to the flat to "stretch" their D horizontally but I expect we do that with TEs instead.   It would be nice for Hill to have a game as I am sure Harris will be stuck to Butt.  Maybe AJ Williams has another big game.   I expect 5-6 plays we hhave not seen this entire year like that double fakey thing Jake did a few games ago but the OL needs to hold up to allow those things to happen.  A long pass or two would be nice to try at midfield as their DBs are very vulnerable.  I also expect our run game to struggle but every team has hit a big run or two so unlike prior years where it is running into a wall 30 out of 30 times it will be 25 out of 30 times and then we hit 5 nice runs.  Key is to make those runs 12-14 yds not 5.  This is the game we see how far our OL has come since Utah.

And dont turn the ball over, esp deep in our zone.

As you said we are dominant in special teams.

Something I noticed early in the season was the amount of success we were having on quick passes out to the wide receivers who either picked up great blocks or broke tackles for big gains. MSU was victimized repeatedly by these types of passes against Oregon, who for some reason abandoned this and went toward power running attack and failed. MSU secondary is not nearly the juggernaut they have been in the past and hopefully Rudock and the staff can take advantage of this. It'll allow the offense to get some easy rhythm and help Rudock settle in. Under Hoke we would have just beaten our running backs into the back of our OLine and not considered alternatives.

I agree with many of your concerns about Michigan State matching up well with Michigan. In some ways, I think MSU is similar to Utah. They have the athleticism up front to give our OL issues, and we only rushed for 76 yards in that game. I also think our pass defense has been propped up a bit by the quarterbacks/offenses we've played, but Cook is the best QB we'll have played since Utah's Travis Wilson. I still have Michigan winning, but I'm not as confident as others.

Great info as always.

And especially thanks for the fresh breath of objectivity, I was starting to choke in the stupefying plume of cognitive dissonance around here.

It's a great test to the layers that Harbaugh must have in this offense if they are to win these games when they can't dominate with better players.

Man, if Rudock could just hit one over the top early it would change the whole complexion of the game.

Of course, if the Dbs get a pick and Peppers runs one back that would be all the special sauce needed to get a B1G! win.

This is great. Thanks for the analysis.
I'm very concerned about our offense in this game. I worry that MSU will sell out to take away the run and that Rudock won't be able to make them pay. MSU is the first defense we've played since Utah that has the personnel to take away the run. And we saw what happened in the Utah game when Rudock was pressed to carry the offense.
I worry that it's going to be a long day of 2-yard runs by Smith into the pile. For the first time since Utah, we'll need Rudock to be above average. And I'm just not convinced he can be that.
Need a huge defensive effort by M.

Ugh, getting wrong-armed is the worst. I agree on the matchup issue. Frankly, I think this game will be tougher than the Ohio game, where we match up a bit better. What I will say is that although Cook is the best QB we will play all season, he is the type to try to fit the ball into a window. And I think our pressure and our newly-handsy DBs can get a turnover or two from him. This is going to be one of those old field-position games where turnovers and special teams will decide it. God, I love a good, close football game.

......not to mention, it's actually looking at some players that might have been on UofM's side of the ball if they had never stopped recruiting pro style and defense during the RR years.

I just hope it's as epic as it should be so that is good for both programs moving forward, plus if it's a great game it'll go to soldify the winner as a top team without costing the loser a chance at a great season.

Rudock and how he handles what Sparty will throw at him is the key. If he plays well, I think we got this. If they force him into a bad game, things look very dicey.

Also, their linebacker naming conventions are very, very stupid. Why have a word that starts with S represent the weakside linebacker instead of the Strongside? Why have two positions that start with the letter M? Why have a two-syllable word when the purpose is to shorten it? Maybe the Star is meant to "shoot gaps", while the Money is meant to "save the edge" or some other tortured pun.

Space Coyote

But I think it's so when they draw things on the board they can draw "*" and "$". They also often align field/boundary, FWIW (star to field, money to boundary). I tend to prefer good ol' SAM, MIKE, and WILL, but then someone might get cranky that I called the MLB MIKE instead of MAC, so who's to say.

My biggest fear is that State will turn this into a Cook vs. Rudock show; that's almost a given considering Jake has yet to put fear into opposing defenses while Cook is near NFL caliber with solid receivers to throw to. We got a good secondary fortunately. I think this is going to be one of the greatest games of the rivalry

I'm scared because MSU's D is built to stop this offense.  Its like people are forgetetting what Utahs d line did to this offense, I know the oline made progress but lolutelleli literally threw Kalis, MSU is going to dominate this oline.  Norhtwestern was fundamentally sound but not super powerful up front, msu is strong up front and our offense is going to grind to a halt.  Whether we win this game or not will entirely depend on the play of Rudock and that scares the shit out of me.

Agree about the danger in comparing MSU and Northwestern's defenses. Northwestern has a bunch of overachieving scrappers who have done a helluva job this season but aren't going to straight up overpower guys like Kalis, Braden, Magnuson, etc. MSU is another story. If they decided they're going to take the run away, they will take the run away. If I were Dänton'i, that's what I would do. I'd tell Rudock, "show me."
