Brady Hoke under fire

"What was reported to have happened should never happen," Hoke said. "Ever. It shouldn't happen to anyone. What has been important to us is that anyone who violates or violated the law or university policies, they'll be held accountable."

generally speaking in terms of a criminal investigation, it is greatly preferred that the civil law part of a case, if one exists, is held in check while the criminal investigation proceeds.  the one will taint the other and any witness, particularly any victim, can be painted as looking for money which can greatly impact their credibility and lessen the chance of conviction.

someone above made the comment about 'why no criminal case', and that is a head-scratcher.  the age of consent in cal is 18 (16 here in michigan) so if the young lady was 17 then at a minimum it would be what is commonly called a 'statutory rape', i.e., a 17 yr old is seen under the law as not capable of giving consent due to their age.  something doesn't quite jibe but the general public won't know unless/until the details of the case are disclosed.

It’s time to admit that Hoke is a dumbass. He handled the Gibbons situation poorly, and you’d have to suspend disbelief to think he didn’t know about the SDSU situation.

brady should’ve just said araiza had an unspecified “lower-leg injury” or that he was “dealing with some family issues at home,” like he did for brendan gibbons.

shameful, all around, just like usual.

After reading the article, it sounds to me like the AD and Hoke did what the SDPD asked them to do, and then handled this presser very poorly.  Since all three players are no longer with the team, they cannot talk about them, or the personal reasons the two left.  While I don't believe (for now) they're lying about anything, I do believe they did a very poor job of handling the news release and that will only lead to disbelief.  Now they have a PR nightmare to deal with.

Brady Hoke has one child, a daughter.  One would hope that he wouldn't tolerate rape.  But now we have two examples that lead us to wonder if he does.  I don't think so, but the thought must be pondered...

Urban Meyer has a daughter and a wife. One would hope that he wouldn't tolerate playing grab ass with a random chick.

The problem with that argument is that people don't always consider their loved ones when they're in the middle of a situation. Tons of people cheat on their spouse and have children who they would hope would never be victims of infidelity. Coaches who value wins over morals have children who they would hope would never be assaulted. I'm sure someone more educated knows what this is called, but I'm sure there's a word for it.

During my time at the University of Tennessee I got to know Brady and his wife Laura.  They are people of the highest integrity.  Brady always showed that at Michigan regardless of the on field  results.

His time at UT was not always easy either.  He took over as interim after Butch Jones was fired, only to be let go at the end of the season.  He maintained recruiting and was professional and helpful to the incoming staff.  He never left a doubt about his integrity at UT and he left in good standing.

Brady would never allow that type of behavior and it seems evident that the attack was not widely known.

Except that there's already a history of Hoke not responding to a similar situation...less than optimally. We already know that his integrity is suspect.

I have no doubt that Hoke attempts to run a tight ship with honorable young men. I have no doubt that he doesn't *allow* this kind of behavior. But that's not the same thing as responding to an extant situation with integrity.

You have to believe that all of these programs have attorneys advising them.  Decisions are easy in retrospect, but there has to be a lot of fog of war on something like this.  When did the news come out? Right after the incident or weeks later?  Did the police really tell the AD not to get involved?  In a he said / she said situation how do you really know the facts.  Kicker has a potential pro career worth millions, but not if you discipline him or cut him.  What if you’re wrong. Guy says he is innocent.

I doubt anyone on this board needs this advice, but very very few women are interested in having sex with more than one guy at a time, or in a row.  If this situation comes up in your life you’re probably committing a crime. She is either too drunk or intimidated or both. If you do find that one special lady who wants to have sex with you and your buddy you are going to catch a disease and you really don’t want to see your buddy having sex.  It isn't worth it.  Find a single woman.  Porn isn’t real.

These are impossible and terrible situations.

Something horrible happens at a party or whatever, possibly not on campus, and possibly even during a season.   In some instances, allegations have not been true also, though I'm guessing most would agree that most of these allegations are real.  Nonetheless, someone needs to find out and then press charges if the allegations have evidence.

So, investigations happen, which themselves take time, and are done in a way that has to steadfastly adhere to privacy rights for both the accusers and the accused.   Then there's the wrinkle in there where the AD says the PD asks them not to investigate, as it may interfere with the PD's investigation.  So hopefully the school doesn't catch heat for not investigating something they were asked not to investigate.

Meanwhile, I can't imagine what the coach learns and when.   And if it's during the season, he has 100 other guys he still has to coach with this hanging over the 3 players that will be investigated. You can't cancel a season over an allegation against 3 players.

How does anyone ever deal with that?   Does this ever go smoothly?

Not sure of what Hoke knew for sure but the university and police should 100% be under fire. Sounds like this victim did everything they were supposed to do on their end and more. Went to have a rape kit done right after, gave her testimony to police and even did the phone call to gather a confession for them. I don't see any other way to interpret this besides the old police don't want to do their damn jobs because a case involves an the athlete and it is really disgusting that we still have that crap happening in 2022. At minimum they have very solid evidence of statuary rape. There is no excuse for why this case is still ongoing and no charges have been brought yet.
