Blake Countess Wins Auburn's Defensive Player of the Year Award

Submitted by alum96 on

Looks like it worked out for all parties involved - didn't realize Blake ended up playing half the season at safety.  Thankfully we had no major injuries among the DBs during the regular season as many had penciled in Blake and Wayne Lyons as 2 of the key DBs about 10 months ago!

Countess was named the team's Defensive Player of the Year after after totaling 65 tackles with two interceptions and 10 pass breakups. The graduate transfer started all 12 games in the secondary, including six at safety.

The 2012 team went 8-4 in the regular season with losses to the #1,2, and 3 teams at the end of the season, with the 4th loss to Nebraska when Denard got hurt. I really don't get why everyone is so quick to bash that team.

Reasons. The JV look of the team against Bama and the (NT)USC loss in the Outback. That is why I don't agree when people say that the Citrus Bowl is meaningless. The outcome of this game could determine a lot of how the season is remembered.

I get the criticism of the Bama game - we indeed looked awful - but not the bowl.  That was an 11-win South Carolina team that finished in the top ten, and they beat us on a last-second pass.

i get what youre saying about the citrus bowl, harbaugh flipped this team in less than a year and had mostly the same guys playing confident and competent ball much of the season which is what most everyone wanted - tough to call the season weak or too much of a letdown even with a bowl loss, i get it.

but harbaugh obviously does not think or operate that way.  hes building and sharpening this program in his image (as well as his dads, his bro, and bos, etc) and according to his beliefs and that includes getting after it 365 with no letdowns, no half measures.  harbaugh wants the bowl game w, he needs the w, and so does his squad

He was the best player on their defense and the coaches raved about him all year. The Fournette play overshadowed a very solid year. Wish we had both he and Pipkins.

I wonder if he ever regrets leaving. He left for an auburn team that a lot of people thought had CFP potential and ended up being pretty bad, compared to the team that he left which was thought to be a pretty middling team who is now pretty good and is going to a good bowl.

Well the theory was he was not a press corner due to size.

It would have been interesting if he switched to safety here but with the emergence of Clark he probably would have been squeezed out by mid year from the starting corner spot.  Of course this is in a world we assume Clark would develop as he did with Blake taking his reps.

Think it worked out for all in retrospect.
