Big Ten QB Rankings: JJ No. 1, MSU's Kim No. 13
Football fodder in May - we'll take it. College Sports Wire is out with its ranking of the likely starters at quarterback for each Big Ten team. Lots of respect for JJ. Not so much for the new guy at MSU. The full list is interesting, which you can see HERE.
Jong
McCord seems a bit high. I'd put Allar above McCord. I would be surprised if cade ends up around 8. He doesn't have the weapons that he did here. He struggled last year and has a huge drop in talent around him.
Allar above McCord despite McCord being a 5-star recruit in a system that has produced high-output stats for QBs on the reg recently and has the best WR room in the country PLUS an extra year within said system before taking the reigns? I hate the guys down south as much as the next guy, but that's a bold prediction.
The star thing is a wash at best because Allar was the the top qb in the 2022 class. Small sample size, but Allar looked good in the snaps that he took. He also has two backs that were stellar last year as freshman.
There's no question that McCord the top receiving corps in the country to go along with a top 10 backfield. I'm not sure about his line. But I haven't seen enough of him to put him above Allar. More importantly, I'm not sure if osu will look like they did against UGA this year or if they'll be closer to the team that went out there in Evanston.
He was 4th composite (1st for just 247), but carry on. Doesn't impact the point you're making.
Who does PSU have ar WR?
O.J. McDuffie and K.J. Hamler
Allar has had the chance to get some playing time and McCord has very little live action.
McCord still has to win the job yet from Devin Brown.
Devin Brown is in the portal/already transferred as far as I know.
edit: I guess after a quick google he isn’t? Must have been prematurely reported
You have to think of the coaches/scheme when putting these together.
OSU
Maryand
Wisconsin (Am I really typing this?)
Purdue
Huge advantages when just looking at numbers.
On the other hand you arent winning any awards with these offenses.
Iowa
BIG GAP
Penn state (O line issues)
Michigan (just due to lack of passing - look at WR numbers last year for an example)
Put Cade on Maryland and Tau on Iowa and its a different scenario by a mile.
Little used 5 star v little used 5 star - "I'd put him above him"
JJ will hopefully be a Heisman finalist.....
I personally think the PSU QB is going to be good and will end up second on this list...
I also admit that I know nothing about the OSU QB other than he his likely prone to getting the flu....
I was impressed with Allar when he played last year
He wont be and its not his fault.
Cornelius Johnson and Roman Wilson COMBINED for 57 catches in 14 games.
Roman Wilson had 4 catches in the final 4 regular season games.
I said this last summer and ill say it again. Passing is a "break glass in case of an emergency"
MSU 21 OSU 22 TCU 22
You guys are setting yourselves up for a let down again.
I count seven transfers in the list.
Also, Altmyer of Illinois is possibly the thinnest Power Five QB I've ever seen.
Jeff Sims was a solid QB at Georgia Tech. After a rough start and coaching change, they played much better in the second half of the season and won a few surprises down the stretch largely due to him.
A lot of teams wanted him, I think he’s a good pickup for Nebraska and will finish higher on the list.
Sims is sneaky fast too. When I saw him play I immediately thought he looked like a 6'5" Denard.
Lol. I LOVE the fact that this list is completely contradictory to the crap that MSU was saying. No, Thorne wasn’t passed up. He saw the writing on the wall that the team sucks.
Feels like one of those seasons where everyone leaves Staee for dead and then they pull 10 wins out of their ass on a bunch of lucky bullshit.
I think those were the Dantonio years. Not so sure Mel has the same kind of luck.
Yeah, those Dantonio years had usually-elite defenses and solid offenses that let them pull out these late-game wins. MSU's defense is turrible and their offense has lost a ton of playmakers and didn't replace them with a lot. Walker was literally the perfect type of transfer and that's unlikely to happen again in 3 years.
I do think MSU is a bit better this year but last year they were 3-1 in 1-score games; they probably should have lost 1-2 more games than they did. Tucker has been pretty "lucky" thus far and that usually doesn't hold up.
The child sacrifices to Ba'al were always good for a few wins too.
Dantonio could do two key things much better than Mel.
Evaluate talent and coach.
You are having Dantoni PTSD
Even their dietician fled the coop and didn't want MeLLLLLLLLL taking her bonus money.
Their OL should improve from horrid to ok against not real team as they had transfers in. They got some nice guys on the DL. Nice transfer in and the tunnel criminals return. LB solid. secondary remains a joke. WRs broke to bits. RBs more transfers. TEs limp. They look like a 6-6 team. 5-7 mayhaps.
They get 2 wins vs Richmond and CMU then Penix is gonna roll in and smack dat ass. Maryland QB gonna feast. @Iowa Cade gonna feast. @ Rutgers = 2 equals. @Minn = loss. UM death to smoochie. Maybe beat Nebraska. OSU has disembowled MSU for 5 years. @Indiana = could win. PSU at home so could be a win but they would probably be broken by then.
Just don't think MeLLLLLL taking 30% of everyones NIL is the way to go but MeLLLLLLL gonna MeLLLLLLL
I recognized 4 names on the list and 2 of them were JJ and Cade.
That's on you - there are some good QBs on there. Much better than the crap running through this conference the last 3-4 years.
Astonishing how many of those QBs are transfers rather than kids recruited by the programs directly from HS.
This wasn't much of an article but I do think McCarthy is the most proven starter in the league right now with Talia a close second. It is disrespectful to have McNamara behind Drew Allar and Kyle McCord, but at least with McCord we've seen that offense is pretty plug-and-play at QB. Allar looks like a guy who has potential but played like an overwhelmed freshman his first year and so we'll see if he can be better without the Clifford safety net.
Don't sleep on Mordecai at Wisconsin. They don't have a ton of weapons but he's used to playing in an up-tempo offense and that matches what Longo wants to do.
It's interesting to me that the first four guys on this list are homegrown talents, and then the next six guys are all transfers. It's crazy to me that half of the expected starters in the Big Ten are transfers. College free agency at its finest.
That was my reaction as well. In fact, I didn’t even know half of transfer even happened until I read that article.
JJ has star power!
MSU - Don't worry because "Tucks coming". I look forward to Tucks contract giving Sparty indigestion.
Not a fan of underestimating a kid I've never seen play. I enjoy it more when we pave MSU into the ground, and then make fun of them after.
A lot of unknowns in this group but I am more excited about the potential of these QB’s compared to what the B1G has had recently. Also, if Tagavaloia can be drafted 3rd round or later, I’d be ok with the Lions drafting him (unless it is clear Hooker is the real deal)
I'm sorry, but if you rate below a Rutger QB you have some serious issues.
I'll go limb dancing and say Cade finishes higher than 3 & 4. I don't think that is a huge leap but I think he is far more known quantity then two un-provens. He has a Big Ten Title to his name. I think Iowa could be really strong actually and yes I do know watching their offense is like watching turtles race backwards in the snow.
Mordecai should be higher. Proven commodity. Mid to upper 60s completion rate and not dinkin and dumpin with 8.0 average.
JJ same completion % range and 8.4 ave last year.
Card not as much experience but looks pretty good too. Interesting to see all these transfers in while MSU rolls out... err...
If JJ can clean up those occasional wtf throws like his pick vs Iowa in the BIG and his 2 pick sixes vs TCU, he'll back this ranking up nicely.
That sounds about right to me.
