Betting odds for the next Detroit Loins HC

Submitted by UMProud on December 1st, 2020 at 11:11 AM

"In a prop wager asking who will be the next head coaching hire by the Lions, Robert Saleh is the betting favorite at odds of +575. The defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers has been a top head coaching candidate for a couple of seasons now.

Likewise, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy is considered to be another head coach in waiting. Bienemy is the second betting choice at +590."

An intriguing possibility is Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh. He’s listed with a betting line of +725."

I don't see Harbaugh in Detroit.  If he goes to a total rebuild, it will be for Woody in NY.  I still think the Chargers are his desired spot.  Has connection to Spanos, has an indirect connection with Telesco through Greg Roman (could they reunite??) and its a younger squad that he can mold a bit.  It is a win-win as his wife is a fan of Cali.

The Lions need someone who can be a culture-changer. There are a number of candidates who are obviously good coaches, but the Lions need to start from the ground up inside the organization. That's why it seems like Saleh should be the guy. Very strong leader in addition to be an adept coach.

Was scrolling to see if anyone brought him up.  I think he'd be a solid hire.  He was brought up for other GM roles and seemed to have success when he was working in front offices in the early 2000's.  Granted, we've been more exposed to him since he's on ESPN, but he always comes across as having a no nonsense approach.  I also think the fact that he was a former player can be a benefit, at least when you are trying to change the culture of a team.  I would not be upset if they hired him.

Fun fact: Robert Saleh would be the second Northern Michigan University grad to be the head coach of the Lions (joining Steve Mariucci). That's a lot of NFL head coaches for a school the size of NMU.

Another fun fact: According to my research, Jim Harbaugh is the only former Michigan football player to be a head coach in the NFL. There have been 503 head coaches all-time in the NFL, and he's still the only one who played here.

Although he’s always been seen as a college coach, why not give Urban a call? The league is now more spread focused than ever. Is it because maybe his ability to dominate in college also relies on athletic mismatches that you’re unlikely to have in the NFL?

Bienemy is ticketed for Houston.

The Jets will hire some dumb retread again, maybe even McDaniels.

The Chargers and Jags jobs will likely be open as well. I think Nagy, Fangio, and Pederson both get one more year.

The Lions have a great opportunity here. Saleh has some appeal as a hometown kid, and he might retain Bevell as his OC. That would be the play if you're holding on to Stafford.

If you're committed to completely starting over, you hire Kirchener from Seattle as your GM, and lean into a new QB and offense with Wilson from BYU and either Joe Brady or Arthur Smith as HC.

No "big name" will be returning Sheila's phone call, I'm afraid, as long as Wood is there.

Saleh and Bevell worked together in Seattle. You don't have to turn over much on offense if you franchise tag Golladay and keep Stafford.

With those two, plus Hock and Swift and Decker-Jackson-Ragnow up front, you've got a perfectly competent offense.

I think you'll be surprised to see how different the offense looks the last five games here. Bevell has nothing to lose and everything to gain by opening up the playbook.

It's the defense that has to be rebuilt. And you can't fix two units in one off-season.

Saleh or Bienemy is the answer.  I've written this before that I think Harbaugh is better suited for the NFL because game theory wise what he wants is more applicable than in college - I think you can still win in the NFL with a ground oriented offense paired with a ball control philosophy (see Tennessee) because it is not practical to expose a roster of 60ish players in a 16 week schedule against other pros and try to use an extremely fast paced offense, which is something Harbaugh clearly has no interest in.  That said, it's clear he is no longer a QB whisperer so to me he is no value coaching in the NFL or big-time college ball.

I don’t see Harbaugh getting a job in the NFL. His shine as a head coach has worn off, and that’s before any team does it’s due diligence in uncovering everything on him, which means they’d prob know what “happened” to him over the past few years. Whether medical or not, that will prob turn teams off of him being a head coach. He’s also not going to be wanted for an OC role either.

IMO, he either signs an extension at Michigan (Gross!) or goes on to coach at a lower FBS school if he continues coaching past this year.

I don’t think Beinemy is the right fit for the lions. Nor would he take the job. Lions look like more of top to bottom rebuild. Beinemy makes a lot of sense with Houston with Watson. Lions should go for Saleh.

JH will not be the Lions HC. JH only possibilities would be the Jets or the Bears. Just watching how JH's personality has changed over the past couple years, I think he knew he would make a jump to the NFL and I think it will occur in December or January. What are the best betting odds for Michigan's next coach?
