Beilein Buyout Question

According to this article from last year, Beilein doesn't have a buyout if he gave reasonable advanced notice. According to this article from 2015, reasonable advanced notice was 60 days.

So which happened: did Beilein give advanced notice or does he owe the university a few million dollars?

I get the sense that the AD knew about this for 60 days.  Hence all the churn around the MBB program.

I have no source whatsoever.  Which makes my opinion the same as the people who get paid for theirs.

I'm willing to work for free.

See, that's what I do.  I give.

Nope.  The Cleveland GM Koby Altman has been conducting an exhaustive interviewing search of all the young, up-and-coming NBA assistants as the Cavs searched for their new HC.  Altman as recently as last weekend was in Denver where he conducted THREE interviews with members of the Blazers & Nuggets staff.

Word around here is the Beilein hire was 100% a "Cavs Dan" Gilbert move which would be completely true to form in how he conducts business.   Gilbert has little to no use for his GM (see David Griffin) and has yet to renew even GM ONE contract and Altman is probably the weakest (resume-wise) of all of them.

Remember too that Gilbert has for years tried to lure Izzo to coach the Cavs to no avail.  Him shifting gears and targeting Beilein independent of his GM and the rest of his executive team seems totally like something he would do.  Presumably we'll know more today but it sure looks like this was Gilbert and Gilbert alone who pulled the trigger on the hire.

Don't take this the wrong way, (because if you are just talking basketball I agree), but getting paid 30 mill for 5 years doing what you love to do, with a young upcoming roster, not having to worry about recruiting, attrition, the transfer portal, and parents bitching about how their kid is being used, doesn't sound like a dumb thing to do. Especially if you have the owners ear.

Not really.  The GM for the Cavs (with the very short term exception of David Griffin) is nothing more than a titular figurehead position with all relevant decisions made by Dan Gilbert.  Beilein may report on paper to Altman but in reality his boss is Gilbert - Altman holds no real power in the organization.

Now....if you want to debate that working for Dan Gilbert is no box of chocolates I think you're on to something.

I'm working off memory here, but Manuel said in an interview yesterday that Beilein made him aware of the Cavalier talks around May 1st or 2nd. He was notified yesterday morning at around 8:00am that Beilein was taking the job.

Was thinking the same thing last night. Hopefully he has to pay back some money, which we turn around and put it in the Brinks truck that we park in front of Billy Donovan's house.

I have no inside information, but I would have to think Beilein gave them proper notice if he is the sort of person we assume he is. I am basing that on nothing other than a rough impression of the man, mind you

If 60 days notice is what it takes to avoid the buyout, there is no way in hell Beilein told them on March 12 - or before - that he was leaving.  In between the regular season and BTT, he told Warde he was going to be the next coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and it came out only now?  Nah.  Buyout is all but certain.  And I'm sure Gilbert forked out the cash.

 Here is my best guess:

He did not provide 60 day notice.  The Cleveland Cavaliers decided that he was their  guy. Coach B said, “let me see what happens in the draft lottery tomorrow. Cleveland says “if you sign today, we will pay off the buyout. If you wait until tomorrow, the deal is off the table“.

coach B It’s a way too calculating and intelligent to not realize the impact of a ping-pong ball coming tonight. That was a substantial bargaining chip for Cleveland as Zion is still on the table for 12 more hours. They capitalize on that, and Coach B is way too intelligent not to get seek compensation for taking a risk before the lottery.  Cleveland gets their guy, and Beilein gets his buyout. It’s the classic ‘win-win’.

here is my hwwwaaaayyyytttt take.

Beilein is going to wake up a year or two out and will have regretted leaving Ann Arbor for the dollar. At some point, the owner of the cavs will no longer favor John and the suffering will commence.

If you are fulfilled in your job, stay.

1. He obviously wasn't "fulfilled", he needed to scratch the NBA itch.

2. He's 66, he has all the money he needs.  He didn't leave for a pay raise.

Good luck to him.  He is a great coach and person.  Wish we had hired him when he was 40 and he stayed the rest of his career.  C'est la vie...

"He obviously wasn't "fulfilled", he needed to scratch the NBA itch."

I don't buy this.  I think he just got tired of the cesspool that is the NCAA, especially when coupled with the NBA draft rules.  I think those reasons soured him on college ball.  The only reasonable thing to do was try something else.

I'm not saying that he didn't care about proving himself in the NBA, I'm sure he did/does.  But I also think he would have been content in college until he won the Championship.  Unfortunately, given the cesspool he was swimming in, he didn't see that part on the horizon...

The cesspool that is college basketball was likely the reason that he wasn't content with his job (assuming that's the case).  It seemed like by all accounts, he was very content at MICHIGAN.  he was never looking at other schools.  But, Michigan plays in the NCAA, and since, as you rightly noted, the NCAA has allowed bball to turn into a rampant cesspool, he probably decided that he no longer wanted to be a part of that.

It's always been conventional wisdom that college coaches don't often make the jump to the NBA in part because having to deal with the diva-ass personalities and star players who overrule coaches is a major headache (to put it mildly.)  That's still as much of a problem as ever.

Now, how bad is NCAA player-management that John Beilein, of all people, decided the NBA was preferable?

I have to wonder if he will be happy dealing with the egos and lack of team-first characteristics of the NBA.  It seems like one of his main strengths is getting players to buy into the system and team before their individual success.  This could be a big issue at Cleveland.

I agree with this.  Every time some dolt tells me the 'grass is always greener', I remind them that it's not more green, it's just a different shade of green.  Every job has its benefits and detractors, so keep track of them.  When the detraction side outweighs the benefits, leave.  Otherwise don't budge...

Hopefully the loser Dan Gilbert has to fork it over. Warde is soft though, so I would be surprised if he just let him walk

OP - Sam said on WTKA this morning that Warde has stated he was "aware of the Cavs situation" as of early May so it sounds like no and the buyout would be involved at that point

My guess is Warde doesn't make him pay. But I think some pissant from the Freep will go after the story and make it a big thing, like "he's stealing from a public University" style.
