Beilein’s Response to Crowd chant at OSU game

Submitted by GoBluePhil on January 31st, 2019 at 3:05 PM

John Beilein was asked about the student section chants of F_ _ _ Ohio after the Wesson players mother posted a scathing social media report regarding the conduct.  Ms. Wesson said the student section was the worst she has ever experienced.  When Beilein was asked about the student section chant he stated he didn’t pay much attention to the crowd but added that if in fact the students were chanting what was reported “We have to clean that up”.  I watched the game on Television and agree that it was not a good look for the University.  Freedom of speech is one thing but a BTN audience doesn’t need to hear Michigan students chant like this.  I’m almost 70 years old so my perspective is probably outdated.  I’ve been told that the F word is an accepted word in the millennial language.  Not sure I agree but I’m curious what the board thinks.  I hate OSU but would never berate them like that.  But like I stated, I’m a lot older.

It’s not needed. Be above that crappy school. Cheer and have fun but no need to chant that at a game. There are families and young kids there

It's not about being old and out of touch, it's about acting at whatever age with class.  Cracks me up that so many Michigan fans and students will always talk about what a great academic institution of learning the University of Michigan is, but can't seem to get their mouth out of the gutter when it comes to jeering the opposition at games.

There's no absolute free speech right inside Crisler.

The nauseating part is the hypocrisy. OSU fans spew vile garbage routinely.

I'm not saying that to justify UM fans returning the favor (and personally prefer that UM fans be above spewing utter garbage), but it's ridiculous for OSU players/parents/fans to act like UM is a bad guy and OSU is somehow above such behavior.

That was Ms. Wesson's implied claim.

What?

Look people, Ohio State basketball is 3-6 in the BIG10 and 13-7 overall.

They have 11 more games to play in the regular season and I for one hope they lose every single one of them by double-digits.

F%#& Ohio.

This is youthful rebellion.

Beilein is right to call out the student section. But telling Ohio to fuck itself is a part of the Michigan student experience, and defensible by the ethics of youth. College is when (if it wasn't clear by then) you don't have to do what the grown ups tell you.

I heard the chant on TV, and thought they were saying 'Buck Ohio'.   If not, I agree with Beilein that this need to change.  Students need to be more classy than that.

I had thought they were saying "Beat Ohio", but then the first word didn't sound like "beat". The chant then dissipated and I didn't give it much thought after that. It didn't even occur to me that they could be saying such a thing. At the risk of being accused of pearl-clutching, I don't think a good response to Buckeye behavior is to lower ourselves to their level.

As I've gotten older, swearing has lost it's appeal as taboo, and I generally think it's dumb to yell "Fuck you" at people who are playing a game for your entertainment because they attend a different school.  But at the same time, if the internet has taught me anything is that there are assholes who love to yell shit all the time, and trying to stop that is a fool's errand.

Michigan is no better than any other fanbase when it comes to chanting, and they shouldn't act like they are.  But the pearl clutching also feels like theatre and I'm not going to lose much sleep over it.

Kinda think we got lower to sparty and bucknut level on this one but not in their league. Mom needs to check herself and witness personal attacks of violence in her heaven. Move on mom ...

I'm 38 (too old to be considered a millennial, too young to be considered Gen X, but I digress), and I agree. F-bomb chants are not a good look and unbecoming of an institution that sees its itself as the leaders and best.

The fact of the matter is, this was a one time thing. Obviously it was fueled a bit by the disappointment of the football game and getting a chance to pound them in any sport was cathartic enough that it got the chant going. It's not the best look, it's not the classiest behavior, but if you've never had a toothless Ohio man or a drunkass OSU Coed look you directly in the eyes and say right to your face "fuck Michigan" like so many of us have had happen hundreds of time, then you probably don't understand why chanting "fuck Ohio" for one game only is a perfectly acceptable practice.

You won't hear this against Nebraska or Maryland or even MSU and everyone will forget about it until the next time we play OSU. And the next time we do, it's gonna be fuck Ohio all over again.

My wife and I were at the game. It was our first night out since the birth of our first child. Neither of us partook in the chant, but actually talked about it on the way home. We wondered what we would tell our son they were chanting if he was at the game. I said we would say everyone was saying “Buck Ohio”. Since they are buckeyes and we want to buck them off the court like a bull rider. It would be dumb but to a young kid might make sense.

I agree that this chant is DAF but I may or not have been chanting it in my head right along with them

I live in a city, where adults and kids are frequently exposed to F-bombs and far more unsavory stuff. It's what you get in a city, IMO worth it for the positives city life provides (obviously, since I choose to live here).

So, I personally don't feel a bunch of kids chanting "F-Ohio" is worth much fuss, nor do I think it endangers little kids in the crowd.

My dad would have explained to me that just because some people use such language does not mean it's appropriate, and I should not use that word. Done and done.

That said, I don't like it either. IMO it's kind of obnoxious, not classy, and unsporting. Would prefer they use less coarse language. Oh well.

Michigan's simple Fuck this and Fuck that chants go way back, at least to the 90's when I was there, and I believe much further back than that.  It's stupid and pointless and silly, but it's also exactly what we're trying to say without getting caught up in propriety.

So, fuck the Irish, fuck the Spartans, and most of all, fuck the buckeyes.  clap clap clapclapclap

GoBluePhil,

I agree with you, it's not what UM should be about on a chant in my opinion.  It made us look cheap.   I'm in my 60s and was raised at a different time, so I'm probably pretty old to most on Mgoblog.   I love Michigan and we are better than that.

So Wesson boys Mommy had a problem with the student section? "Wow, spitting, cussing, throw(ing) (must not be very bright) foam lights at the guest team".. Chanting F___ Ohio.

Hmmm.. Sounds like the same disrespect Michigan fans, parents and band members receive at Ohio during a football game.  My daughter was in marching band and pretty much received the same love from Ohio fans, including spitting and middle finger pointing...

It's a rivalry and it's been part of the scene for years.  Quit your complaining.  The superior basketball team took care of business on home court.. Go Blue!

I'm an old guy so my prospective is colored by my age. My parents taught me that "gutter talk should be kept in the gutter". I took that to mean there is a proper way to speak in public.

Since MGOBLOG is a public forum I do not speak the same way I would speak amongst close friends. Shouting these words at a sporting event is a total lack of class and not what I want to hear when I am with my mother, wife, or children.
