Bacon's New Book Coming Out Sept. 1 or 8

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Nothing much new here, but John U. Bacon confirmed on WTKA this morning that his new book is coming out either Sept. 1 or 8. He'll know for sure next week. The title, as you might know, is "Endzone: The Rise, Fall and Return of Michigan Football."

Very much looking forward to it. The part I'm anticipating most is the supposed REAL story of how and why the Notre Dame series was canceled.

I don't have a list in front of me or anything, but there were many debates about it on this site back when Three and Out came out. There were multiple places where the descriptions of games and events were factually incorrect, and some of them were immediately apparent to die hard fans. I didn't think any of the errors made a difference in the overall theme of the book or any of the conclusions reached, but some people looking to refute someone writing negatively about Michigan latched on to them as reasons to discredit the whole book. The difference between benign factual errors and making up and embellishing stories depends on your point of view after all.

Yikes - hope you come back with some examples.

Everyone, including authors, makes mistakes*. But I sure hope before you're accusing an author of "making something up" (beyond making a mistake, you imply fabriaction for effect) you have some pretty solid proof.

I'm fine with JUB isn't your cup of tea, but please clarify.

*In addition, everyone murders peple.

Has made a career of making things up, or maybe a better phrase would be"recasting" a scene. I used to work as a jounalist in the state and when reporters around the state would get together at an event and go drinking afterwards, some of the funniest stories were all the stuff the Albom would make up.

He got busted the one time on national TV with Cleaves at the Final Four a few years back, but he has been doing that stuff for years.

When you are writing Feature pieces there will always be some creative license. You can make Charles Manson look like a sympathic figure with the right tone in a story. It is how much liberty you take and what someone's tolerence for juggling the truth is that defines journalist integrity.

Couldnt disagree more.  And if you've had the pleasure of meeting him you'd know he's just a guy,  like us when it comes to Michigan sports.  The difference is he's got both a passion and a platform, much like Brian.

FYI - he's a pretty regular visitor here too.

Bacon is a nice guy and an okay writer but I really dislike virtually all of his takes on everything. He strikes me as the haughty id of the Michigan fanbase, rambling on and on about nonsense like purity and on the inherent ills of professionalism and it comes off as arrogance. I feel like he'd be the type to say something patronizing like "non-alums can be Michigan fans but they'll never understand what it is to be Michigan Men". I also think he gets too close to his subjects and blows rainbows up their asses.

Not a fan of that book, way too many positive vibes on Penn State and Bill O'Brien.

I do love his writing style. Bo's Lasting Lessons and Blue Ice were great and I'm definitely looking forward to reading this new book. Hopefully there's a lot more details on the Harbaugh hire.

John is awesome I love his books, and his Bo impression. Three and Out was so eye opening. Bo's Lasting lessons really lets you get to know Bo. Fourth and Long while not a only a Michigan books gives so much cool info on the B1G. Endzone will be no different. So interested to know the real story behind the scenes of what we have had to endure the past few years!

I wonder what his definition of "return" is.

Wasn't our last win the debacle with Northwestern?

As a current student at UM, and one who took Bacon's ED 212 Fall semester last year, I personally cannot wait for the book's release. (baked potatoe)

Call me a vindictive asshole but I am hoping that this book is really embarrassing to at least a few people.  By now RichRod, Hoke, and Dave Brandon have taken sufficient beatings in the public eye  but there are at least a couple of other people who are responsible for the decline of Michigan football who have escaped scrutiny for too long.

Whatever the case, I hope that it's honest and analytical and pulls no punches.

The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads – they all adore him.  They think he’s a righteous dude.
