The B1G has 4 top 7 teams in total D and 5 of the top 9.  Michigan is one of those top 7 and has already played 3 of the other top 9.

Yds/Game

1. Wisc  223.5

2. OSU  224.3

3. Utah  246.3

4. Clemson  247.2

5. UAB  255.3

6. Iowa  265.9

7. Michigan  266.2

8. Georgia  268.2

9. PSU  280

Plus 3 others in top 20 -

13. Minnesota  283.8

18. Indiana  310.2

20. MSU  312.8

So M has already played 3 and has 3 more to play in top 20.

1. OSU  7.9

2. PSU  9.6

3. Iowa  10.1

4. Wisconsin  11.4

12. Michigan  17.1

Had a tough sched. this year.  But I put that in a different thread already.  Had us as #3 hardest.

Yards per game (and points per game) stats are heavily influenced by tempo, to the point of being almost meaningless.  And, without adjusting them for the opponent either... I mean, yay?  But, I think I'd take Michigan's defense over UAB's, and I haven't seen a single moment of UAB football this year.

It's both.  The big ten doesn't have elite qb's and only one is playing at an elite level and a couple playing good the rest are avg qb's till you get to 10-16 teams in the league and it gets flat ugly when you get to Rutgers and Northwestern.  So while the big ten is playing really good defense, they aren't facing elite qb's week in and week out and when they do, it's not like they are shutting them down.
