It's ridiculous that they can't move up one of Indiana/Iowa or MSU/PSU when three of those teams haven't even played yet and are already in DC. Our players and coaches have to get up at 5 am just because Delany is a prick.

They can't move msu psu up because psu played yesterday so you can't have teams play 2 games in less than 18 hours. That's also why moving back this game would mean having to switch what time the winner plays Purdue tomorrow also. It's doable but it's a lot more complicated than just switching one game time today.

Like when he had Jim's back after the OSU game when Harbaugh called out the officiating and our Charman-soft AD sided with the B1G?

Sorry but Warde is a 280 pound marshmallow who would rather have Delaney like him than Michigan fans and alumni. The fact that he isn't SCREAMING right now about this confirms to me what I've said about him for a long while now.

He's a fucking pussy.

"President Schlissel and I are glad to know that the students, coaches and staff are all safe and that nobody was seriously injured," said Warde Manuel, Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. "The safety and health of our students and staff is of the utmost importance.

"We have worked quickly to arrange alternative travel arrangements for the Michigan travel party. We have been in constant contact with the Big Ten Conference and appreciate their support and willingness to work with us as we sorted through all of the issues. As of right now, we will be able to arrive tomorrow morning in D.C. and play the game at noon as scheduled.

"We appreciate all the support and well wishes from our Michigan family as well as those who have reached out with their thoughts and support. Go Blue!"

What a pussy. Not standing up for our players or coaches as the B1G pushes our shit in one more time.

who just takes it.

No, we're not privy to their conversations, but this conference keeps fucking us year after year after year and it would be a rare and wonderful sight to have a Michigan AD who fights tooth and nail for the program and refuses to suffer any shit silently.

Because all we see is what we see outwardly. And it's silence, always compliant silence.

Why do people equate yelling loudly as being productive and doing your job as "taking it"?  Seriously, I'd like to know.  Manuel might not be a good AD; I have no idea.  He did good work at UConn, but this is a different beast.  But thus far, the big complaints against him are (a) he didn't fire Red a couple of months into his tenure, coming off a good season, to placate people who saw a floundering program propped up a good year, (b) not getting a home game back from Notre Dame (even though he did what everyone wanted and got ND back on the schedule), (c) letting Jim Harbaugh say his piece about the OSU officiating and then letting the matter end once the NCAA responded instead of, I don't know, being an asshole like the last AD and responding with some snarky comments, and (d) not holding his breath or forfeiting a game, or whatever people believe he should have done, in response to this literal act of god that is a plane being blown out of the sky and forcing a tight turnaround for the basketball team.

Didn't the "Gene Chizik of college basketball" actually win an NCAA championship like 3 years ago kinda like how the actual Gene Chizik won one in football. I'm sorry but I am confused, are you saying he is a failure because he hasn't won 2 or 3? That is a pretty high fucking standard. And didn't Warde win AD of the year a couple of years ago while at UConn? What the hell was your ridiculous point. That he didn't turn a horrible football with no history or recruiting footprint into a national power?

LS And Play

You can win a national championship and be a bad coach. That was the point, and it's really not that hard to understand. Cam Newton is to Gene Chizik as Shabazz Napier is to Kevin Ollie. Mediocre coach rides transcendent player to a title. Transcendent player leaves. Coach returns to mediocrity.

I thought it was winning a championship, sorry about that. Thanks for the enlightenment - we are lucky to have your insight on the board. I now know it is more important for random internet message board posters to think you are a good coach than to actually win championships. Oh and great point about Napier, no other team in the last 10 years has had a talent like Napier to work with. I mean the guy was a #24 pick in the draft - guys like that only come around once in a lifetime. In fact, a good coach should be able to win with 5 walk-ons since talented players allow bad coaches to win.

interesting that you have such disdain for the insight of people on this board - kind of seems like one of the things we come here for.

Ollie's teams/recruiting post championship have been noticeably dull and mediocre.

And the fact that you cite Napier's draft number as a definitive statement on what kind of college basketball player he was suggests you might not be one of the random internet posters we should be listening to.

Blue in Paradise

Kevin Ollie was a horrible hire and a terrible, terrible basketball coach.  He only won the championship because Napier was a transcendent college basketball player - which of course had nothing to to with his coach, who actually made him worse.

Warde Manual is a total moron who secretly hates Michigan and does everything wrong.  Any good decisions he has made in his life were an accident.

I hope you now view my insights as worthwhile.

You know he was an assistant at UConn before taking over, and was the lead recruiter for Calhoun for basically every guy on that roster?  And that guys like Napier and Daniels notably improved in their games once he took over for Calhoun?  By this logic, Carr didn't win a national title except with Moeller's players, because being on the staff means you had nothing to do with the team until you became the head man.

March 9th, 2017 at 10:47 AM ^

UConn won a national title, went to the tourney another time, and won 20+ games 4 of the last 5 years.  They had a down season this year, but also signed the #23 recruiting class this year after pulling in #8 last year.  They are probably going to be fine with Kevin Ollie.  This isn't fucking Gene Chizik getting lucky that Auburn paid enough for Cam Newton.  And even if he doesn't win another title for them, he still won A NATIONAL TITLE IN BASKETBALL.  You could do a whole hell of a lot worse.

And show me the illustrious history of UConn football that Bob Diaco had to improve on?  Randy Edsall left them after going to the Fiesta Bowl, then burned out at Maryland.  When Warde arrived, he was stuck with Paul Pasqualoni and a deflated team.  He replaced him with an extremely hot coaching commodity in Diaco, coming off a MNC title game appearance and a national assistant coach of the year award.  That's a good hire, even if it didn't work out.

Again, Warde might not be up for the job at Michigan.  But if the worst thing he does is hire a national champion coach and tries to replace a struggling program with an extremely good option, I'll take it.

shtick, we get it. But it kind of leads you into a gallery of straw men as well as black and white thinking.

I mean, really, there couldn't be any middle ground between dumbass Brandon and his shitty, pointless, totally uncompelling jibes and not standing up for your football team after the biggest game in a decade and one of the great screw jobs of the new century. Couldn't possibly be any middle ground there. It's a pretty grand straw man to suggest that any of us expressing disatisfaction are somehow longing for some Brandon snark.

It's funny you've created a straw "more rational than thou" man here to support whatever argument you are trying to make.  I disagree with you, and you can't really counter with anything other than hyperbolic claims about the "great screw jobs of the new century" because JT Barrett may or may not have been over the line.

You clearly don't like Warde Manuel for whatever reason.  I really don't give a shit why or plan to change your opinion.  But at least if you are going to respond to my comment, put some back into it.

Did he really do a good job at Uconn? His football coach just got fired and his basketball coach is on a fast downward trend. I don't know that everyone wanted Notre Dame on the schedule. I was fine with Arkansas as something new and we have to go there after giving them the last game as well. We didn't have any night games despite having PSU or Wisconsin at home.

I guess same reason people equate doing absolutely nothing with the presumption of gobs of behind the scenes activity.  You have consistently defended Manual's inaction as someone being proof that he's taking a quiet more diplomatic approach to situations but what exactly leads you to that conclusion?  What evidence do you have that he's doing ANYTHING on our behalf other than the fact he's drawing a nice paycheck so the assumption is he simply MUST be working hard.

Here's what I know to be true.

1. We have both our biggest rivals at home and away the same years.  While certainly not his fault Manual has said nothing publically that indicates this is even a problem for us and no action has been taken or even discused by the B1G in fixing it.

2. The officiating for the OSU was suspect at best, downright criminal at worst.  Officialls with ties to both Ohio and OSU itself were selected and calls were so one-sided (and even invented per the "technical foul" called on Harbaugh) that our coach lost his mind afterwards.  Manual, in fact, squelched the discussion early by saying in essence "we support the B1G" and stopped Harbaugh from speaking out on the subject.

3. When time came for the bowl committee to decide rankings and bolw pairings Manual was absolutely silent on the issue and said nothing to support Michigan being selected over a team they beat 49-10 so PSU went to the Rose Bowl and Michigan went to the Orange Bowl.

4. We have a fucking plane crash for god's sake and Manual's statement does nothing to addrees the extreme time pressure our team will be under to just get to the game today, much less have suffiicient time to warm up and prepare mentally.  I dont know if you watched Mike & Mike this morning but a reference was made to the situation and the noon tip today and they said "boy, the B1G is doing Michigan no favors with that one."   And yet our AD says nothing, does nothing to call attention to the situation other than to issue a statement saying we're making alternative travel arrangements.

Try to imagine any of the above situations happening in East Lansing or Columbus and the AD sitting silent on the issue.  I certainly cannot - their heads would explode and the whole world would know about it.

So does yelling work?  I couldnt tell you - Warde's afraid to try it.   What I do know is sitting quietly and hoping that a conference that is full of schools terribly jelous and resentful of our schools's success will play nice with us sure as hell isn't working.

bronxblue

March 9th, 2017 at 10:58 AM ^

1.  Yes he has discussed it, and sounds like he's seeing about fixing the imbalance.

2.  His official statement is the conference handed down its fine and Michigan would not discuss it further.  I couldn't find any evidence where he said he supported the B1G's decision beyond the perfunctory "they have made a rulling."

3.  I'd love to have evidence to support this claim.  PSU played and won the B1G championship game.  That means they go to the Rose Bowl.  Unless they go to the national championship playoffs, I don't see any reasonable argument Michigan could make in that case beyond "scoreboard" from 3 months before.

4.  Again, he said he worked with the conference to see what could be done.  The B1G didn't accomodate them, which you can take issue with.  But there are 7 other teams set to play today, 7 other fanbases traveling to this event, and the conference decided this was the best option.  I agree it sucks, but all Manuel can do is bitch and moan in the media or tell his team not to go and forfeit the game.  Show me something else he can do in this tight a time frame.

mGrowOld

March 9th, 2017 at 11:05 AM ^

He could say something on behalf of the team he allegedly represents asking for help.   I dont give two shits about the other 7 schools - I care about Michigan and while Warde may be more concerned about being fair to everyone else I'm not.  I dont like seeing MY school get screwed over.

I get that you love Warde and his style of whatever it is he does.  I dont.  I prefer an AD like the one I grew up Don Canham who was always Michigan, not conference, first, last and always.

March 9th, 2017 at 11:39 AM ^

Again, you seem really angry at the B1G here and have no information about Warde Manuel did or did not do.  He probably told the conference he'd like to switch the games, the conference said "nope, because X, Y, Z", which likely included both PSU and MSU agreeing to a switch (which ain't happening), and that was it.  You want him to rant?  Fine.  Do that.  Lots of super-successful people scream their heads off all the time, and sometimes it works out for them and sometimes not.  But again, what do you want Warde to do here beyond that?

I never said I loved Warde's style, and I'm not sure if he'll work out here.  But I sure as shit don't want the screaming, arrogant asshole you seem to be calling for because, in the long run, those guys fuck over a program way more than they help.  We saw what a smug AD (Brandon) can do to a school, and it wasn't pretty.

But whatever, we aren't going to agree on this.

MGrow - you usually bring sound perspective, but reading through this thread, I'm beginning to think you have a personal issue with Warde instead of a performance issue.  Everyone should be free to do their job their way as long as they get results. Unless I have missed it, Brian has not posted anything alluding to coaches not enjoying working for him. I have not seen any news about a massive shift in income or debt for the department. I have not seen any major embarrasing stories or poor handeling of an incident. These are the primary responsibilities of an AD.

Most of your complaints have to do with fans perceptions of events, real or not. Regarding the OSU refs.  Warde could have gone on a profanity laced tirade which would have been embarrasing to the university and it would not have changed one thing.  Michigan lost. OSU won. There will be no asterics added to the record book (unless there is an investigation for illegal activity), The game is not going to be replayed. What you don't know yet, is if there will be rules changes going forward regarding what refs get assigned to games.

Michigan's game today was not going to be changed. It was one team impacted out of 14. There is not a thing Warde could have said that would have led to B1G to change the schedule. Tickets have been sold, TV contracts are signed. NCAA & conference rules are in place regarding how late games can be played and in what order. Short of saying they simply were going to stay home (in which case Michigan would have forfeited) nothing was going to change. That's reality. You can be mad about it. But it's reality. You can evoke the names of Bo and Canham. But the one thing I know both of them stood for was going out and doing your best to win the game no matter what the situation.

Or he's an adult dealing with a difficult situation to the best of his abilities.  But no, he'd show his true toughness not be making sure his players arrive safely to an event and working within the confines of a league that has to juggle a number of logistical issues, but by sub-tweeting a league's decision, being a certain weight you deem rasonable enough to be taken seriously, and demanding that Michigan gets a different start time for their game, even if that could very well screw up 7 other teams and their fans.
