This will be your thread for hot takes and snowflakes regarding the defense against Army.

Defense was fine. Held Army to 14 points in regulation despite getting screwed over by the offense multiple times. Consistently having to defend short fields. Would’ve liked to see more pressure from the DL but triple option teams fuck with everyone.

Couldn't have asked for much more from Don Brown’s unit today.

We knew coming in this would be a tough team. The defense was put in tough situations with the turnovers, with an offense that was built to exploit our biggest weakness - lack of depth at defensive tackle. AND, with army's willingness to go for fourth downs - there were drives where every other team would have punted (like when army went for it on their own 30 yard line), that would have otherwise been a 3-and-Out. Also, Metellus got robbed of 6 points that would have possibly sealed the game.

Not the best performance, but we survived.

They didn't get a lot of help from the offense, gave up some plays.  I feel like we mostly got the game from them we expected in my opinion.  But they won the game for us at the end with a crucial turnover.

Once everyone is done crying about all of the bullshit, maybe we can appreciate the final three plays of the game. First down, Khaleke penetrated and kept them to a one yard gain. Second down, Hutchinson makes what I believe is the play of the game and blows through the line for a tfl. Page finished it off for an amazing end to a game. Rewind the game and just appreciate how awesome that ended.

They only gave up 243 yards and earned three turnovers.

Honestly, this was better than expected.  We desperately need better play from our DTs though.

The defense played just fine against an inspired Army offense. The D hung in there, then forced the big turnover to end it all. We haven't played Army for 57 years. I hope it's at least that long till we face them again.

D held in there and did a pretty good job most of day.  Saved the shitty offense for sure

Made some big plays to put Army in tough spots too

I generally think this defense is good and I think they are strongest against a pro style offense. Pass coverage and pass rush are good as long at the QB isn’t super mobile, but this Army offense is so hard and frustrating because it’s not normal. It’s a freak. I’m more angry that we had to take time to prep for this game. Next year, schedule Little Sisters of the Poor and Needy.

I hate to take anything away from our guys because they DiD Win the game when it mattered...but I felt like Armys coach made some really bad decisions which cost them the game (calling for a pass that turned into Hills pick, deciding to punt on 4th and 1 at the end of the game when they had been working us all game for 2-4 yards per rush...)

That Hudson offsides in OT would have essentially put the game away had he lined up right. Dumbest thing I saw since the .... beginning of the 4th QTR when M went for it on 4th and 2 at the +19, tied.

I liked the 3 man front.  It seemed like a logical decision to sub Mason out for an additional quick linebacker/DB.  Nothing in the Army attack is very predictable and I would rather have the flexibility at the second level than a guy in the middle who is just going to get run over anyway.

To me, that wasn't Don Brown saying "I don't know what I am doing", he is saying "I don't have any fucking choice".

The defense saw full retard mode from MTSU and the option the first two weeks and largely held up well given all of the new personnel.  The rest of the season is against the shit you game plan for year in and year out.

As usual it is the offense letting all the air out of the balloon.

Defense played decent today. I still don’t like the interior of the line. Wisconsin will steam roll us with Taylor.

I thought the D played with guts in the second half. 0 points until OT.

Army is tough to play against, and unfortunately their strength faced our weakness this year - bad matchup for us. Despite that, we got several stops.

Michigan made so many mistakes, and turned the ball over 3 times in the first half; defense kept it close.

They showed a ton of heart. The stop in 2 OT was magnificent.

Other than a couple dumb plays by Hudson more or less the defense did what we expected and honestly saved the game with the interception and sack/fumble. They were on the field far too long due the offensive incompetence and gave the team a chance to still win.

The defense did better than I expected, no doubt. I would have said we would have covered the spread if you told me the defense would only give up 14 (in regulation).

DT is of course a huge issue going forward, but they did well today given what they were facing.

Hutchinson made a play that someone like Chase would have made last year. All-American type play.

I don’t care what position you want to call that he plays, but Josh Uche needs to be on the field 90% of the time

D was great. Those fumbles giving Army short fields weren't their fault. If the offense comes today with its head out of its ass, we win by at least 21 and Army only scores 7 at most.

Defense was good.

Our defense was playing against a scheme that they never otherwise face, aren't particularly built for, and will probably never see again in their careers,

And against a team that:
-- Went 11-2 last year.
-- Took Oklahoma to overtime.
-- Scored 21 points on Oklahoma in regulation.
-- Gave up 21 points to Oklahoma in regulation (one of the nation's top-scoring offenses).
-- Scored 70 points on Houston in their bowl game.
-- Was hugely pumped up to be playing Michigan in the Big House.

Our defense then, despite many turnovers by our offense, including some that gave the opposing team short field, went on to hold this team to 14 points in regulation.

Our defense did it while avoiding injuries to themselves.

Our defense also happened to save the game.

Our defense did a fine job.

Highly impressed with Army's defense. Basically shut down any of our speed in space and contained the run game.  Caused a bunch of havoc turnovers.  Army is well coached and highly disciplined.  Thought our defense was the same so that was a positive.  We matched them on defense, so that was really good.
