America 12 Conference could be Big East's new name
The Big East could be changing its name to the "America 12 Conference," according to ESPN's Brett McMurphy. The conference has not made an official decision yet, but is looking into changing its name following the departure of the Catholic 7 basketball schools, which will reportedly retain the Big East brand.
The name "Big East" doesn't particularly fit the conference anymore anyway, as it will stretch from Texas to Florida to the Northeast. The shifts caused by conference realignment have rendered more than one conference name as a poor descriptor, but the Big East had probably the least descriptive name of any FBS football conference...

That's kind of Delaney-ish.
It's not a catchy name but I commend them for not making a mockery of geography and accurately representing the number of schools in their name.
If they spend more than five minutes designing their logo and thinking of the division names, they will have Delaney beat.
Ricky Stanzi must be the commissioner of that league!
could be your life.
Doesn't it seem unwise for them to include the number of teams in their new conference name? It's one thing if you have an older conference with a brand identity (e.g., Big Ten). But if the artist formerly known as the Big East does this and there's further reallignment with teams bolting for the ACC/Big Ten/Big 12, then what?
This is probably so people can't call them the Big Least anymore. Nobody makes fun of America.
John Lamb at owlsblog.com is reporting that the new former Big East will revive the old Metro Conference name and (hopefully) logo

I like it.
That font is groovy.
East Carolina is not "metro" in fact, it's just about as rural as N. Carolina gets.
This link should take you to a Google Maps overlay of the "America 12" geographic distribution. If not, it is on this page under America 12 now. HERE
Geographically, it is really more like "America In The Early To Mid 19th Century 12", but it could also be an occluded front drifting slowly south and east across the Ohio Valley, bringing a chance of ho-hum football to the southeastern portion of the country as well as the East Coast.
Alternatively, as it is the C-USA's Shadow Conference now, it can be "Conference Without Portfolio".
America 12 = A12, and that means...
... an exciting offensive scheme for football that, unfortunately, happens to be illegal in college and the pros?
... the Atlantic 10 (A10) on steroids?
... a massively overbudget, over-hyped, never-flown killer airplane?
For these, and probably other, reasons, "A12" seems about right.
...and that's what it really is.
If they were smart, they'd say TUCK FRADITION and go all Oregon/Nike on the conference.
What do they have to lose? May as well be "cool."
Have a cool logo, with nothing that resembles tradition, just let Nike pimp you out. Maybe they'll give you a niche and a place.
America 12 sounds like Conference USA. Hell take that name and make C-USA come up with a new one.
Bully all the way down, someone's got to fall.
How about the Nike conference? I understand the B1G considered sponsors being allowed to name their divisions. Would this be allowed?
why not...
Hell get 6 Nike schools and 6 Under Armour schools and just get nuts with the whole thing. Make a circus out of it because thats what it is at this point.
as long as the big ten has leaders and legends i will not make fun of any other conference names.
So America 12 will have the Depends Division and the Metamucil Division....
At least it isn't something terrible and unimaginative like the "America 12" Conference.
wait wat
I didn't know that they retained the Big East brand. I was kinda hoping they'd end up called the Catholic 7 or the Catholic League, or something of the sort. For some reason I like that as a name for a conference.
Would be kind of rude to Butler.
I'm glad the conference isn't hanging onto the "Big East" name. Now the last plausible reason they could claim to be a BCS-level conference is gone.
