and it's always funny when people say guys should stay to work on some aspect of their games as if their game has to be perfect before leaving.

The decision is largely about where you project to go now vs. where you might project to go if you stay with some personal things that could play into that equation.

I'm not sure that Chase can put on the weight to be an NFL run stopper without sacrificing the speed that makes him a great edge rusher since he's relatively short for the position at 6'3.  So his role in the NFL may be best as a pass rush specialist anyway.  In which case, he's ready enough to start his NFL career.

Hopefully, he makes the personal decision to come back.  The team could be really good and he might want to be a part of that.

and team performance compared to how good/impactful a player really is.  Lot of examples here:

Gary (1st team coaches, 2nd team media) v Winovich (2nd team coaches, 1st team media)

Hudson on 3rd team coaches, 2nd team media

Dowell making 1st team media, not on coaches

Lavert making 2nd team coaches, not on media

So over 50% of Michigan's defense were all-conference selections, despite only having 1.5 returning starters and the majority of new starters are 2nd year players.... man I have to give to Brown the defensive staff, these guys are elite in all areas.

Probably because they gave up a lot more big plays than last season. If Harbaugh had brought in Brown his first season so that 2016 was the 2nd year in his system, that might've been the greatest defense in UM history. They're still certainly top 3 IMHO, but I think they could've been legendary had that happened.

A bit better safety play and Brown might still put together something of that caliber. At the very least having a perennial top 5 defense is a very nice thing to have!

I feel like Long got short-changed in the voting.  Tindal getting 3rd team because referees get tired of throwing flags for DPI shouldn't be the bar to overcome.

Otherwise, well-deserved recognition for a bunch of guys on a great unit.  Will suck without Hurst next year.

what works in his favor is that most of his yards were in conference play. He may get some votes from the Indiana, Rutgers, and Minnesota coaches/media. Will that be enough for HM? Maybe not.

EDIT: If they have 2 RBs per team, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teams, and honorable mention, he might get 3rd team. He was 7th in yards and 5th in yards per attempt. It hurts him that the majority of his production was against those three teams I mentioned.

Agreed. For as well as Higdon came along towards the end of the year, he's not in the same league as Barkley (no one is), and guys like Dobbins and Taylor just had much better seasons.

I continue to be amazed at how Wisconsin keeps finding star running backs year after year, and aside from Fitz's one year wonder, we haven't had anyone better than average since Hart.

Just look at the Heisman trophy as an example. I just meant his name is well-known to voters since he has started for 4 years. Looking at the pre-season projections, Cole was first team All-Big-10. They may keep him there, but I think the 4 losses and issues with the offense may cause some folks to look for another option.

issues should not take away a player's individual achievement.

Look at Brandon Graham, he was productive despite playing the worst defense in Michigan history.

Beside, Cole's high projection isn't because of NFL potential. They loved his techniques and ability to block with consistencies. The tape is there for Cole to get drafted.

as it was a pretty strong year for TEs in the league and they tend to cannabalize each others catches/stats.  It was a strong year in league for TEs and all these guys will be ahead of them:

1. Fumagalli

2. Gesicki

3. Fant (almost 500 yards and 10 TDs for Iowa)

4. Dickerson (over 400 yards and 4 TDs for NW)

Probably Hoppes (NEB), Thomas (IND), and even Baugh and/or the Purdue TEs.

They had promising years, but lacked the production needed for these awards, and both made some crucial mistakes and drops (McKeon fumbling against MSU and not making the play on the fade against Wisc, Gentry not coming down with the jump ball against PSU, dropping the JOK pass against Wisc) that keep them as just promising, but nowhere near elite players at this point.

You can kind of see the difference between coaches and the meda on a guy like Rashan Gary. The media probably didn't like that he didn't blow up a stat line whereas the coaches know how much they have to prepare for him with double teams. He is a beast. I can't wait to see him next year and in the NFL after that.

Media only giving Lavert Honorable Mention is suspect, but other than that, I generally agree.  Uche and Gil getting some gametime late this season will pay off big when they step in for McCray next year.

Media, as always, you can almost predict from just looking at basic stats. David Dowell had 5 INTs, therefore 1st team media, while the coaches relegate him to HM because his actual play was kinda meh. Lavert didn't have shiny numbers (in part because QBs simply didn't throw at him), so stuck as HM by the media.

Can we get an intern on what B1G team had a great disparity to All-B1G performers on one side of the ball, vs the other?

The defense had 6 on the first, second or third team. Beside Cole (2nd team?), I can't think of anyone who likely will be on for offense. Higdon might squeak onto 3rd team, and I think that's it. I don't think TEs will get a spot, as Gesicki, Fumagali and Fant all had much better statistical seasons.

If it's 6 to 1, I wonder if that ratio has ever been topped.
