Afternoon NCAA Games, and Do You Root for Non-Rival B10 Teams?

Submitted by xtramelanin on March 22nd, 2019 at 12:25 PM

Mates,

Going to be a short day at work for me and have the games on right now on the computer.  Watching Iowa v. Cincy.  Question for you all though as you watch these games, do you pull for the other B10 teams that aren't rivals?  For instance, it seems like a natural that we'd want Iowa to advance.  If I can get over the Pitino factor, I'm good with Minny advancing yesterday.   So setting aside ohio and sparty, do you pull for the other B10 teams?

Northern Lights tonight in most of the northern states, so don't forget to look outside if you can get away from clouds and too much light pollution.  Have a great weekend and Go Blue, beat those gators!

I root for all Big 10 teams. Including Sparty and OSU. I think it's forgone OSU will lose soon. And honestly, I don't care about Sparty. I'd be happy to see them lose. Conversely, I'd love to play them again and beat them. I'm pretty confident in Michigan and Beilein, and feel that Big 10 success only helps Michigan.

I root for Big Ten teams not just because they're in the Big Ten, but generally since they are familiar teams and similar in profile to Michigan - large state schools from the midwest. We have a lot in common.

Me, too.  Also, the B1G has to be excellent if Michigan is to be.  Iron sharpens iron.

And would you really want to go back to the days of the Big Two and the Little Eight?  That was no fun.  I want the conference to do well.

Finally perception is part of it as well - when the rest of the B1G wins it helps us.

I do. Not during the season, but just during the big dance. It makes the B1G look better. The more success the B1G can get, the more likely we get the benefit of the doubt with seeding and stuff.

Depends. I'm a Michigan fan, not a lunatic. If a big ten team winning would directly lead to helping Michigan, I'll cheer for them (e.g. if MSU beat OSU in football we would've won the east, so I was pulling for MSU). If the only rooting interest is "it'll help conference perception" then fuck that. Wisconsin losing to BYU, MSU losing to Oregon, all that shit is hilarious and is what makes college sports fun

I know we're supposed to find these stories about dads and sons heart-warming, but hearing a guy say "my dad left my brother on the baseball field as we all drove off and didn't let him home until he got better" just doesn't sound great.  It feels like the line between "tough love" and "Tom Izzo having to be restrained on the sideline" is pretty thin.

Strong comeback by Iowa. B1G making a great tournament showing so far.

I definitely cheer for the B1G, especially in bowl games and NCAA tournament. I feel like conference teams are our cousins - we fight all the time, but still related.

Except, of course for aOSU. Hope they lose in every sport, every time.

Similarly, I actively root against the SEC in football and ACC in hoops, and for Pac 12 when they're not facing B1G teams.

I generally root for my bracket except always against MSU.  I tend to pull for certain big ten teams though.  I picked Cincinnati but am rooting for Iowa as I'm watching the game.

I don't get too worked up about my bracket.

23 point win for OU. I believe Michigan still has the largest margin of victory in an 8-9 game with a 30 point over Tennessee in Bruce Pearl's last game wearing hillbilly orange

As a Cincinnati fan (especially hoops), well...

SHIT.

But this is par for the course insofar as Cincy basketball (and, more recently, Mick Cronin) is concerned in the NCAA Tourney. I can't say I'm all that shocked.

Their conference is pretty much garbage, and I think it was illustrated today, in full detail. Hey, let's just leave Joe Wieskamp wide open all game, fellas. That will work!

Ugh.

Anyway. Not that I truly care all that much about conference loyalty, but this was indeed a nice win for the Big 10. Here's hoping now that Ohio State is the only B10 team that doesn't advance.

UC hoops fan here also.

On one hand --- I can make the argument "well, it was a rebuilding year.  28 wins and a 7 seed was pretty good."

But on the other God Darn !*$(!$()!%*&#&%! hand --- I AM TIRED OF MARCH DISAPPOINTMENT!  The Bearcat hoops program under Mick Cronin does the same sort of thing every year.  A high floor but a low ceiling.  Never breaks through and never seems a legitimate threat to break through.

So many damn missed 3s in that first half.  Should have been up 15 at the half.

Rant over.  Iowa's not particularly good, they'll probably lose to UT by 15 on Sunday.  But the Hawkeyes were good enough this afternoon.
