Admit it. If we beat Michigan State on Saturday

the possibility of pulling off a national championship  in both football and basketball will look more real to you.

The mathematical possibility will increase from barely above zero to barely above barely above zero.

I don’t own a microscope so no, it won’t look more real to me.

I would get solid enjoyment out of trolling Sparty friends though and that’s real.

I’ll admit that it would make the prospect of showing up to the Ohio State game undefeated look more realistic, but I can’t unabashedly believe Michigan can beat Ohio State and then Georgia unless that actually happens, and that is probably what it will take to win the championship.

I don't understand the Georgia love.

They have played nobody. Yeah that defense looks great but thats easy when you're playing Broken ass Clemson.

When Alabama beats them 34-3 in the SEC championship game I'm going to lol.

But they'll still probably get in the playoff

They have played nobody.

Georgia beat 5-3 Arkansas, which beat A&M, who beat Alabama. They beat 5-2 Auburn. They beat 6-1 Kentucky.

For comparison, the only teams with winning records that #6 Michigan has played are 4-3 Wisconsin, 5-3 WMU, and 6-2 NIU. That's hardly murderer's row.

That's a fair point, but I don't think this Michigan offense would move the ball on Georgia, so that's why I assume we'd lose that one.  If you swap out Georgia for Alabama in my original thought, it's probably still the same thought.

But like someone else said, beating Ohio State alone would feel as good as winning the NC, so I suppose the second step is irrelevant.

Another classic example of a person in this fanbase having unrealistic expectations of thinking this team can win a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP if they beat ONE ranked team.

Failing to recognize the massive mismatch at the end of the year against a higher ranked team that we haven't beat in 10 years will only bring on the incessant whining about how this "championship" level team failed to win the big game when, in fact, the outcome of that game was accurately predicted months before.

Expectations are what they are...and they have nothing to do with what will actually happen-in any direction...not even those of the most informed.

The reality-from the positive side: Michigan could win out-all the way to an NC. It is also likely, even highly so, that there are multiple one-loss scenarios that get them into the CFP and on to an NC.

Today this team is legitimately in the conversation.

Speculations on all sides at this time are simply that-speculation.

I mean sure, but only in a technical type of way. I guess that’s one positive of playing OSU late. I’ll always have that assumed loss to keep my hopes in check. Also March madness is always a crap shoot so even if Michigan was undefeated heading into the tourney I wouldn’t have any confidence in them winning it all.

Get real.  The Wolverines are expected to win because the Spartans record is based on beating bad teams badly.  Spartan stats are inflated by big (and legitimate) plays against overmatched competition.  Typical of MSU games, a win is nice but proves little and a loss would be a distinct disappointment.

Michigan beat Rutgers badly and then coasted poorly, beat Nebraska at Nebraska with Nebraska only in the game on trick, broken, and illegal plays (nice but not repeatable), and Northwestern was never really a threat.  Michigan's wins are repeatable much more so than MSU's.

That said, a few mistakes by Michigan and MSU wins.

Beat Staee!

(MSU is the new Wisconsin.  Before Wisconsin revealed that they sucked they were going to be the litmus test as to whether we were actually good or not.  MSU is now that litmus test.  If we blow out MSU my hopes will be up.   If we squeak by I'll still be cautiously optimistic.  If we lose I fear we'll have a free fall against PSU, OSU and our bowl game.  )

Ugh.  Stop.

Even if we beat Sparty 77-0 on Saturday...granted, that would be AWESOME!  But Lucy is already holding that football and on Thanksgiving weekend, we know what that stupid b*tch is going to do.

I'll admit that if we win Saturday it will be the first time since week 1 this season that we beat a previously undefeated team and that Michigan achieved another nice thing this season.

Admit it. If we beat Michigan State on Saturday...

... a not-insignificant percentage of Michigan fans will say Sparty sucks.

I'M NOT AFRAID TO ADMIT THE TRUTH.

Basketball national championship is a foregone conclusion. The only question is if we can win it in football this year instead of next year. If we beat STAEE, we have a more than 50% chance of both natty titles in the same year, for sure. Don't piss in my morning coffee just because I'm being honest.

Not to be the guy that dusts off this board's favorite chestnut, but it holds true:

Until Michigan beats OSU, or until the playoff is expanded, Michigan is not making the playoffs. Much less winning a national title.

As things currently stand and for the foreseeable future, the road to Indianapolis and the CFP for Michigan is going to go through OSU every, single, year. And there is nothing Michigan can really do about that except find a way to win and officially put its demons to bed. Sorry, but even if Michigan beats MSU 45-0, I can't envision Michigan beating OSU until I actually see it happen. And with that being a pre-requisite to make the playoffs until they are expanded (OSU almost never comes into The Game with more than one loss so they will always be in the BTCG/CFP drivers seat), you can put that dream to bed.

And for the folks who sit there and say there is still a chance even if Michigan finishes the year 11-1 with a close loss to OSU, maybe, but the only team to have made the CFP and not won its conference is Alabama. They're one of maybe 2-3 teams in America that has earned that benefit of the doubt. I don't think Michigan will get the same consideration barring extreme chaos elsewhere. You'd probably need a two loss Big XII champion, Oregon to lose again, Cincy to lose or keep winning ugly, a non-undefeated ACC champion, and Georgia to beat Alabama in the SEC title game to prevent two SEC teams from getting in.

But as far as IF Michigan beats MSU this weekend, an NY6 bid should become the floor at that point, and depending on how things shake out with Iowa, they could be looking at Pasadena. Maybe. I will breathe a collective sigh of relief for pretty much the rest of the season, because again, I go into the OSU game with little to no expectations of winning. It will also be nice to just be able to kick back with the wife and watch the UF-UGA game in peace.

So what you are saying is that if we win one of the toughest games on our schedule instead of losing it, we are more likely to win the national championship?  I suppose that I can't argue with that.

It's a weird year. My eyeball test looks at this team and sees a 10-15 ranked team. Then I look at the AP poll and go well... We seem ranked about right by who I'd expect to win head-to-head.

Definitely seems like a down year in terms of talent, which you'd expect to be the exact opposite with the extra Covid eligibility. Bama/Georgia/OSU still seem like normal top 3 teams though, so I don't really think anyone else has a chance.

GRBluefan

I don't think that is what he is saying at all...i think that what he is saying is that just looking at the team's on field performance, it feels like a team that should be ranked in the 10-15 range.  But then when he looks at the actual polls and sees the teams ranked behind us it makes sense that we are actually ranked in the 5-7 range.

my opinion - (1) its tone is grating and argumentative, "Admit it."  No one was arguing with the OP. Don't tell us what to do. (2) the obnoxious introduction is followed by a banal and obvious truism. Of course the likelihood of two national championships increases with a win over State.  It also decreases significantly with a loss to State. No one in their right mind would argue otherwise. It doesn't need to said, let alone argued.
