247 Sports Hiding Crystal Ball Picks

Submitted by AlaskanYeti on

I do not pay for content on 247 Sports and I just noticed that some Crystal Ball picks are being hidden, but those picks can be unlocked by paying for VIP access. Personally, this isn't a big deal and doesn't entice me to start paying to see this newly hidden content. It's more likely that I'll just stop visiting the webpage, but is a bit disappointing. I've always enjoyed the Crystal Ball picks concept.

I have no problem if this is how they want to make money- I've stopped going to the newly rebranded Michigan Insider/Victors Club board because EVERYTHING is now VIP- even stuff that has nothing to do with recruiting or inside information. In general, recruiting coverage is more of a money making business than a service with the intent of ranking players as accurately as possible. Big programs with lots of fans willing to pay get the most coverage and most "recruiting bumps". If you ever browse the front page of 247 half the articles are just blowing smoke at a big name fan base about "Recruit X a big time get" or "Program X named in top 5 of 4 star LB". There is a ton of non news that is almost always positive (until maybe it becomes obvious recruit X is going somewhere else), because people are desperate for constant positive news about their team.

Ultimately, we'll know where kids are going when they sign on the line which is dotted.  Paying for early prognostications seems so strange to me.  There's enough info out there to have a good idea already.

the fact that any of the subscription niche sites can maintain customers blows my mind.  I'll just continue to listen to Recruiting Round Up everyday and checking the recruiting articles here.  Me reading "early access" stuff doesn't make these kids commit any sooner or actually come to Michigan in the first place.

I understand everyone has to make a living, and if they can't get the money from advertisers for clicks they have to get it somewhere.  I guess the casual consumer will have to make a decision whether the information they post is worthwhile enough to pay for considering the companies that advertise don't think its worth much.  I know I likely won't pay for it, but maybe there are enough rabbid college football fans that live and die recruiting out there willing to.

Don't think it pans out in the end for them, but the stupidity of the masses has a tendency to surprise me sometimes.

Whatever

If you have ever paid CLOSE attention to 247 insiders crystal ball picks such as Steve Wiltfrong youd know that following their crystal ball picks is pointless anyways

People like Wiltfrong change their balls at the last hour CONSTANTLY. In fact many of them even try to change their crystal balls AFTER the recruit has committed. Its more about the points and winning the title of most accurate picker of the year for them as opposed to actually giving fans a heads up as to where a recruit is going
