#21 WBB picks up big win at Purdue, now 20-5 overall

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

I said coming into this game that this may be Michigan's toughest game left.

And we sure didn't make it look that way.

For the second straight game, leading scorer Katelynn Flaherty had an off night (13 points). And for the second straight time, the 5-time B1G Freshman of the Week Kysre Gondrezick has picked up the slack. This time she had a career high 25 points.

Michigan went into Mackey Arena tonight and out-rebounded Purdue, 38-24.

Purdue led most of the first quarter before Michigan took the lead and wound up with a 22-18 lead after one and a 38-30 halftime lead.

The Wolverines would pull away lead and stretch the margin to double digits in the 4th quarter, when Kysre really got it going with 13 points in the final quarter alone.

Michigan took this one in the end, 72-62. A HUGE win on the road at a tough place to play that always gets a decent crowd.

Michigan is now 20-5 and 9-2 in the B1G. This Michigan team has reached 20 wins faster than any other team in PROGRAM HISTORY.

Michigan will return to Crisler and take on Wisconsin (5-18) on Sunday. The Wolverines beat the Badgers at Kohl Center back on New Year's Day by 17.

Looked at the scheduled after the last win and thought this may be a tough one. Big time win!

Looks forward to seeing these ladies deep into March!

Indiana at Indiana will be the next big test. We beat them at Crisler 78-74 with Buss and Anderson each getting 21 for them. They're inconsistent but dangereous.

Gondrezick is looking like quite the addition. And, of course, with the women you don't have worry about one-and-done. Got a postcard in the mail today encouraging an attempt to break the women's attendance record a week from Sunday against the Lady Izzos. They'll present a challenge - ranked at times and a knack for winning close ones (and not-so-close ones) at Crisler. Hoping for good news about their coach, Suzy Merchant, who had to step down and take some time off after fainting at a game last month. I'm thinking about going. If they really are challenging the attendance record, they'll take down that absurd "curtain" they use for women's games that makes the PA system sound like disco night in a subway station. A win in that game would probably lock up the double-bye for the conference tournament.

Could go 5-0 down the stretch. PSU and MSU the two toughest games left.

Record wise, this is probably going to be our best season in school history. The best was our 99-00 season when we went 22-8 and 13-3 in conference. If we go 4-1 in the last stretch, we will match the conference record and ensure a greater winning% than the 22-8 season, even if we go 0-1 in each of the BTT and NCAA Torunaments.

That 99-00 team only got an 8 or 9 seed. Bracketology currently has us as a 6, with room to move up IMO.
