2024 LB Aaron Chiles names M to top 3

Submitted by Magnus on May 9th, 2023 at 4:29 PM

Olney (MD) Good Counsel linebacker Aaron Chiles named Michigan to his top three today, along with Florida and Maryland. Chiles is a 4-star, the #6 linebacker, and #75 overall. There are four crystal ball picks in for him to pick the Wolverines. He's taking an official visit in June and will likely wrap up his recruitment shortly afterward.

On a side note, Ole Miss DT transfer Tywone Malone committed to Ohio State. Some thought the New Jersey connection would work in Michigan's favor with Chris Partridge here and Malone being a NJ native.

Not terribly surprising with Jenkins, Graham, Benny, and Grant here this season with only Jenkins likely to depart. He could still be behind 3 guys come next season. I think OSU's DTs thin out after this year with NFL departures.

It still doesn’t change the fact. They had 2(!) top 10 overall players in the 2021 class both being the number 1 and 4 DL in the nation. Zach Harrison was supposed to be a freak. My point is, Harbz and co. got studs like OSU they would be unstoppable because they’re developing far and away better than osu on the D-line and D overall. OSU shouldn’t need to pull in another previous high 4 star without the amount of highly rated recruits they have thus far. Grats on them for hiring a Big 12 defensive coordinator.

Another not so great sidenote: UT analyst Crystal balled Max Anderson to UT. Low confidence ball of 4. Maybe he doesn’t want to be on a Joe Moore team?

There's been some Brandon Baker to Michigan buzz the last few days, but that's interesting as I don't think he's been on campus yet. Blair Angulo, who's a pretty respected West Coast analyst, said that Michigan is Baker's "best fit," which I thought was interesting wording and I guess doesn't actually mean we're in the lead, but thinks we would be the best landing spot for him

For the record, I presumed UM was going to lose someone for this OL haul. Someone was bound to lose their spot give how much success and how many players have opted in to the development machine. I just didn’t see the CB for him yet, and I do like his play personally.

@NJ, believe Baker was coming on a big recruiting weekend but then cancelled it and visited on a Monday a couple weeks ago?

It's interesting to me that OSU was able to get both Ole Miss transfers from NJ who Partridge was lead recruiter for. Part of me wants to think they threw the bank at both of them to prevent Michigan from getting any more recruiting momentum

Also, on the recent Michigan Recruiting Insider, the 247 team was talking about how 3* Cole Sullivan is heavy Michigan lean and could be committing soon. They see him as an athlete who could be LB/DE/TE (personally like him at LB best). Also talked a bit how this summer, don't be shocked if some heavy Michigan leans don't end up with spots in the class because they're waiting too long to decide

Yep, he was who I think they were referring to in that segment. Between Jerod Smith maybe being a DE, Jacob Smith maybe following his brother, us being in a good spot with Dominic Nichols and him taking an OV in a few weeks, and us potentially leading for Darien Mayo, this edge class could fill up quick and it seems like Robinson intends on taking visits well into the summer. However, they also mentioned on the podcast that it could make Robinson move up his timeline like Blake Frazier did

Considering that Davison Igbinosun & Tywone Malone were transferring from Ole Miss, do you think that academic credits might have been a factor?

Yeah I don’t know if he has Ole Miss mixed up with some other school, or what. They rank #151 on US News and World Report.

For comparison, Michigan State is #77 on that list.

#151 puts them alongside Michigan Tech, Cincinnati, Nebraska, Oregon State and SDSU.

Funny story, re: US News and World Report

I have a waitlist for my fall class and some of my really good students aren't able to get in. So I offered to bump my class size up to 55 (from 48) to clear the waitlist. I was told that it wasn't possible because there's a new emphasis on keeping as many classes as possible at 49 or less in order to boost our USNWR ranking.

The end result is a bunch of students that can't get into classes that they need in order to graduate. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah there are ways to game the system to an extent. Their criteria is laid out and schools will try to hit certain benchmarks to a degree. But generally speaking, the really good academic schools are ranked high and the… less good… schools have lower rankings.

I wouldn’t use the rankings as an exact value of education, but if you’re ranked in the 150’s it probably means you aren’t that great of a school.

One of these is not like the others...

I'm surprised to see MTU mentioned in that grouping.  TBH, I would expect to see them a notch above the others there. Is it possibly because as a much smaller university, they're unable to offer the quantity of degree programs even though they excel at most of what they do offer in Houghton?

My guess would be Tech being a smaller school coupled with the fact that they specialize in a couple specific programs holds them back a bit. A REALLY good school for those specific programs, but doesn’t have the prestige in the other programs that much larger schools do.

They have edges but oHIO is in trouble on both sides of the interior line. Is Malone any good? I know he was hyped up in recruiting but didn’t really do much at ole miss. Florida is tough recruiting against this cycle, hopefully we can land Chiles. I was kind of watching Michigan offer 3-4 Lbs recently and took it as a sign he was on the fence, and the teams going to move on if he doesn’t decide soon.

We’re pretty stout on the DL - no big miss with Tywone. I watched his at Ole Miss more than a few times. He makes impressive plays at times but more often than not disappears to often.
