#1 Rated Recruit and their commitment timelines.

Like so many things in life, momentum seems to be a key to success. Having a true difference maker, such as Rashan Gary, commit to Michigan (or any other school for that matter) would seem to add a huge wave of excitement to a program and perhaps nudge recruits that are on the fence to go Michigan's way. It would bring a whole new level of excitement that might truly help finish out a class strong. Kids like to feel they are a part of "something special". That being said, I don't blame Rashan one bit for his timeline. It is a massive decision and the dude has perhaps more options than any other recruit on the planet. Furthermore, I cannot remember the last time the consensus #1 recruit had pledged to a school well in advance of signing day. Can anyone remember the last consensus #1 recruit to commit early to a school?

I have often wondered if consensus #1 recruits are encouraged to carry out their recruitment to the end, whether by parents, coaches, or recruiting sites. Not insinuating payments or benefits being made, but that the longer they keep the process going the more exposure the player, coach, highschool, and recruiting site get. Players of this magnitude know a spot will alwyas be kept for them at any school they want to go.

Agree with the gist but some facts about other #1 recruits' timelines (and follow-on commits) might be good, just to back up the observation. The way this reads is kind of like "did you ever notice that tornadoes seem to hit trailer parks really often?"

no idea. just want to say I respect the way Gary and these other kids take their time and make an informed decision. I would rather have that than have recruits verballing, backing out, etc.

Never intended to put people off with this thread. I am simply sharing an observation that it seems the #1 recruit takes his recruitment all the way to the end...or very close to signing day. I would think 50% of the time you would have a kid commit to a program much earlier than that. That is it....nothing more.

I agree with the first part of your post, but believe you might be off on the second. I have the understanding that you can take official visits regardless of being committed or not. Now, an individual Coach may not allow an official upon committing, but I don't think there is anything per the NCAA that prohibits a recruit from his 5 officials even if they are committed.

Well, you do hear about the flip side of this as well, particularly with highly touted recruits - some have mentioned that they become so innundated with material, visits, calls and so forth that they commit just to make it stop for a time. I don't know that very many do that, but there have been some that reportedly have.

People have their panties in a wad lately. There isn't much to talk about so you get more snark than during football season. With that said OP, a look back at the #1 recruits over the last 7 years, it appears that January to March is the date you can expect an announcement from these guys. I'm sure they know there is a spot held for them, and that gives them time to make a decision. If you weren't under pressure as a recruit to sign on, I can see someone taking their time. There is a longer discussion here about balance in the process as it pertains to the rest of the field, re: the schools vs the typical recruits. Both parties have risk in offers vs commitments, but that's another discussion.

I think this is closer to reality. The top player in the country has his pick of schools and is more than likely guaranteed a spot in those classes no matter when he commits. A middling three star will not have those same opportunities and doesn't want to be left out in the cold so they commit earlier.

It's not a massive decision. As pointed out, he has many options to choose from in where he can go to school and play football. He'll be fine wherever he decides to go.
