Yes only one game, I am not panicking, yet.

From everything I have read so far people are now lining up to lynch Harbaugh and the offensive staff.  Personally am I of a mind to ask Don Brown what the hell he was doing in scheme and play calling wise in the first half, before I go calling for any scalps.  I have watched the game 2 full times and despite the acid reflux attack that I suffered through in the first watching last night, I did see several things that were different and could be foundations for improvement.

First - Shea Patterson play was better than almost everything we have seen at QB since before Rich Rod showed up.  Speight, and Rudock had stretches where they were doing almost everything right and the offense was passable for a ranked squad.  Did he make mistakes, yes a couple of them were because of blocking errors (sacked out of FG range) missed pass to DPJ in corner as two examples, but the thing he did show is that he is accurate and has the ability to both throw an accurate deep ball as well as make throws that allow the receivers to RUN After the catch, which is something we have not had in a QB in a long time.

Second - Higdon needs to realize that about 85% of the time he does not have the speed to beat people to the corner in a race.   I saw at least two times where they ran a stretch play off the left side and there was a cutback lane where Higdon could have planted his foot and gone up field and made positive yards, but instead he tried to get outside of Runyan's left side and was tackled for a loss of 4 or more yards.

Third - The offensive line was average overall for the game.  Yes they got beat several times but I watching the game the second time I saw multiple instances where the Tackle and Guard would get beat because of a line game, or the Guard and Center would get beat by a game.  I counted at least 5  times where Ruiz, or Runyan spent a split second to long dealing with the handoff of the DL and that allowed a the other DL to run free.  When there was no games or extra men the OL handled the pass protection about as well as 5 guys who have had all of 20 practices to work as a unit.  I only saw two times where a tackle was beaten in a 1 on 1 battle and both times they were taking a deep set to protect against a speed rush, and once they got caught by a spin move and  the other time they got beat by what I call a Winovich, which is an insanely fast first step and a crazy low shoulder.  When the OL was able to put a hat on a hat in run blocking they were able to control the LOS, but we need to master either power or zone blocking and then move on, most of the TFL from the RB because of 1 or 2 guys missing their assignment, or blocking the wrong person.  I also counted at least 8 times on running plays where one of the Guards or Center did not finish a block on a LB or DL and that person made  the tackle.  Rule #1 should be if you are engaged on a player inside the tackle box you put him on his ass then move on, not before then.

On the defensive side of the ball, I love the aggressive mentality of this unit but it is the job of the Coaches to control that.   For example the Targeting call on Metellus, was one where he decided to lay into the guy and instead of trying to pull up he continued on and dropped his shoulder.  If he does not lower his shoulder and only runs through the WR as he is going down that call is not made.

Second, as much as I love Gary and Winovich, they need to work on controlling their rush, they ran themselves out of 9 different pass plays and on 7 of them ND either got a first down, or scored.  The great pass rushers know where and how many steps they need to get to the level of the QB for any drop, they hardly ever go beyond the QB unless they are worked that way and they always have a second move in their pocket to get back to that level.

Third, Wimbush has a history, he has tape on him and the scouting report from day one has been that he throws a very good deep ball but his accuracy and decision making on the short to mid-range routes is below average to be nice.   This is a kid that was has video of him throwing the ball at a WR's feet on a slant rout that is simply a drill, and then in another drill throwing a swing pass so far behind the RB that it went out of the camera.  But it looked like all of the first half we were daring him to throw the deep ball, and what did it get us, 1 PI on Hill, a Targeting call on Metellus, a TD pass that went through the hands of 2 DB's and into the WR at the back of the end zone.  And there was one INT and that is positive, but it was a controlled rush that kept Wimbush in the pocket, got up into his face and forced a bad decision which is what Wimbush has a habit of doing.

Most of the mistakes on the defensive side of the ball were eliminated in the second half, but at the same time Notre Dame got a bit conservative on the offensive side of the ball as well.

Overall the loss sucks, I know too damn many ND fans who think their team walks on water, but what I saw was two flawed teams playing in the first game of the season after 20 or so practices and the one that caught the greater number of breaks and played the more mistake free football won.  That being said, I have faith that this team will improve, there were to many good things that happened to say that this team is doomed, yes they do need to win a road game against a rival but if I was told at the beginning of the year that they would lose one of these 3 road games  this is the one I am willing to fall on my sword for.  Because that means they will go into both Columbus and East Lansing and ruin the season of those two teams.

Yes we are 0-1, yes the loss was to ND but think back 11 years ago we were 0-1 and had lost to F'n App State at HOME.  So things can and should get better over the next 5 weeks, and if they do not then I will be one of the ones who is questioning the those who have offices in Schembechler Hall.

We need to be fair to Michigan as a football team. Our expectations are they will perform on the level of Alabama, OSU, Clemson, Oklahoma or other teams in the top ten. They can't and won't. Our coaching staff is dominated by nepotism, past friendships and fired coordinators. What we have in Schembecler hall is a fraternity club. They glad hand and back slap one another. OTOH, top teams coaching staffs are realistic and uncompromising in their assessment of talent and coaching. It's business and nothing more. No loyalties or compromising whether coach or player. You produce or you're gone.

So don't expect much more than what we are seeing. Michigan is an above average football team destined to play in a so so bowl but maintain the illusion they are a top tier team. The next three games they will whack inferior football teams by wide margins and enthuse the fan base again. It keeps the fans buying tickets and most of us watching. In the end they will be a 8-4 team which is where they should be.

What the hell do you think is going on at OSU? Both coordinators are castoffs. We just spent weeks learning about the biggest case of nepotism in the country.

All of this toxic, pessimistic, "woo is me" talk is so tired. It always seems to be accompanied with straight up nonsense too...

Zach Smith begs to differ. Also...every other top program is a group of coaching fraternities. They all hide people with whom they are most familiar.

Harbaugh actually called Belicheck to ask about a D Coordinator when Durbin split. Harbaugh had not met Don Brown but went with the person who produced solid on field results despite their lack of familiarity with each other.

I agree with the OP. Granted, this was a shockingly disappointing game. Very un-Dude to have things blow up defensively from the get-go, and put even more pressure on the offense. But it seems sensible to let the season develop a little before we collectively set our hair on fire in panic.

Unless we’re setting our hair on fire just for the fun of it, in which case, I’m in.

We are basically on the same page. Last year we opened with a win over Florida and despite warning signs and some sloppy play we thought we were on our way. Florida finished 5-7. We won't know for a few more games but if ND is a top tier team, then the fact that we didn't win on the road at night in our opener, would not be a cause for major handwringing.  The QB play was highly encouraging and that will ultimately lift our ceiling. The O-line probably won't get good enough to make us a play-off team, but that doesn't mean it can't improve at all. How many equal or better defenses will we face?

True but the biggest difference between this year and last is the fact that the OL was simply being manhandled 1 on 1 and never was cohesive as a unit.  I saw solid play from the middle of the line and flashes as a unit, but even pro offensive lines deal with some issues when 3 of the 5 starters are either new to the unit or changing positions.

I don't know about Northwestern but MSU was statistically better than ND last year and returned just as many starters.   Granted, they lost a starting corner due to injury but he's slated to be back on the field before we go to East Lansing.  PSU may have as good of D as ND as well.

A lot of what you are saying is true.  There is no reason to panic, but by no means should these sort of performances be acceptable.  It is not about last night, but rather about the last three seasons.  Harbaugh has been hyped out of this world.  This team was hyped all off season.  The on field result was poor.  The worry is the program isn't trending up.

Dude, they would've lost to App St. yesterday.

I get all the rationalizations, but it was always a 3-gane season: ND, MSU, OSU.  Now it's a two-game season.

I don't have a lot of faith in this coaching staff to suddenly turn things around. 9-9 and 4 in a row will do that to a person.

I was hoping Jim was going to set the game plan and call plays, but clearly Pep is still the guy in charge and that just stinks ... to high heaven.  Sorry but Pep is not a gamer and he needs to step down to a support role for this year.

Jim Harbaugh - get the f-ing control of your team.  Pep Hamilton sucks.

I’m staying patient, I know we looked bad, but remember ND is Good this year and they looked bad too. 1st game... Only beat us by 7. Not a bad Loss, if the OL didn’t fail completely Shea gets more time and we win. Reminded me of losing to Utah Rudock's 1st year. Just gonna take some Tackles doing there job. If they can fix the T position, no one will want to play us. Brown made some fantastic adjustments at the half. we won the 2nd half, but it’s a whole game, so it’s a L.

The score doesn't capture how lopsided this game was. ND only beat us by 7 because they stopped blitzing and went into prevent defense late in the 4th quarter, which lessened the pressure on our O-line and allowed us to squeeze out a touchdown. The defense did stiffen at halftime, but let's be honest: given the way we were being overwhelmed by ND's front seven, the game was never really in doubt. It's the same old bullshit. When you can't protect your QB in the face of a decent pass rush, there isn't a hell of a lot you can do on offense.

Your title instantly told me you're either less than 35 years old or just started following Michigan football a couple of years ago.  I'd almost bet my life on either one or the other.

No reason for panic.  Good reason for disappointment combined with optimism.  Can't know which emotion should dominate this early in the season.  Don't really know if ND's defense is top tier or if instead our Offense is just a slightly better mediocre than recent years.  I'll stick with optimism at this point:  first game, the deadly opponent scoring of which all came in the first half;  held ND to less than 100 yards in second half;  Defense did enough to create a situation the Offense had the chance to win; Result has no impact on Big race;  One thing did worry me....Patterson looked shorter than 6' 2" on the ball bat down play.  Loss of Metellus was a big deal, I think.  Unfortunately the silly pitchforks by media and fair weather fans will continue until Michigan wins its division - that's just how it's going to be, fair or not.  Personalities like Harbaugh are a double-edged sword....creates some enemies just waiting for their time to strike.  That said, I think Harbaugh has chilled quite a bit.....but it won't matter to the haters.  If I had to identify one thing to criticize:   cautious offensive playcalling, and conversely ND went for it offensively in the first half, taking advantage of first game butterflies.  Go Blue.  Open up the offense, defense is fine.

Excellent points. It all sucked for one game. I heard Shea actually say in the post game presser “maybe this is a good thing for us.” Let’s hope so. I feel Confident that a few cupcake teams will have us back to believing we can play with anyone and, more importantly, allow the coaches to get our boys up to game speed.

I am Still confident that this season could be special

Hey, I'm an optimist too.

I think we can improve as the season progresses and the units gain game experience. We can all see where improvements can be made, though it is a lot easier to recognize mistakes while reviewing plays on TV than it is in the heat of the moment. Coaching and experience will help (defensive backs practice catching interceptions?). This squad has good potential, and as the coach repeated in his post-game interview, they kept fighting to the end.

Part of the problem for commentators is that we have been spoiled by the ease with which we can watch highlights of past successes, like the heroics of Woodson and Desmond Howard. This inevitably leads to unfavorable contrasts and disappointment, but we forget that these were very special talents. Most of the current players are young guys yet. Give them a chance. Maybe by their final year some might merit Heisman consideration? With encouragement and determination they may surprise the doubters yet (some of the criticism is not only unkind but abusive, and says more about the critic than the player targeted: come on, guys, these are cheap shots).

Go Blue!

For eight months, all we heard was how much this team had improved and how hungry they were after last season and how the staff changes had worked wonders. And then we saw them shit the bed just like we've seen them shit the bed so many times over the past 10-15 years. I appreciate the optimism, I really do, but there's only so much shitting the bed I can watch before shitting the bed is what I come to expect out of this program. I mean, 12 years without a true road win over a ranked opponent in 16 tries? What reason do any of us have to think that they WON'T shit the bed?

I kind of thought we would lose a close game to ND and I think it would have been close if our D did not give up 21 points in the first half. I was not expecting the D to look so average and never thought a sub par QB would be able to make throws on our D. I still think we are destine to lose 3 games. I think WI will beat us at home and OSU will beat us on the road. I think we have a chance to win close games at MSU, at NU and home against PSU. There's an outside chance we could run the table but Harbuagh needs a better offensive scheme when we play good Ds like WI and OSU. If the D does not return to being dominate we may end up with 4 or 5 losses this season.

How does Harbaugh not spend this entire week just coaching the O-Line against the D-Line?  The O-Line needs reps and to come together as a unit.  I’m sure Ed Warinner knows what he’s doing, but the time is now.
