TomVH: Jarrod Wilson's Top Three and Timeline

Submitted by TomVH on

Ohio DB Jarrod Wilson's name has been popping up lately because of a visit he took last week to Ann Arbor, so I caught up with his coach, former Wolverine, Ricky Powers. Here's what Coach Powers had to say about his star DB and where he's at in the process.

TOM: How did Jarrod's visit to Michigan go last week?

COACH POWERS: It's funny, Jarrod is a lot like myself, he's just a laid back kid and nothing really shakes him. I asked him how the visit was and he said it was good. He went to Penn State this past Friday and he said that was good, too. He doesn't emphasize a lot, but I think both visits went very well.

TOM: Where is he at in the process as far as top schools and timelines.

COACH POWERS: His top three are Notre Dame, Michigan, and Penn State [ED: in no order]. He's going out to Notre Dame on the 10th, and he's already been to Michigan and Penn State like I said. I think those will be his last visits, I'm not positive, but I think so.

TOM: Does that mean he'll be deciding shortly after that?

COACH POWERS: We definitely want to get it done before the season starts. He wants to graduate early, so we want that to be out of the way and taken care of.

TOM: What kind of advice have you given him, or what kind of questions does he ask you throughout this whole process?

COACH POWERS: The only advice I've given him is to look past some of the stuff, all of them are going to have great tradition. He needs to find where he'll be most comfortable as a person. He has a pretty good checklist, I haven't seen it, but he has a good checklist that he asks schools. He'll make a great decision wherever he goes.

TOM: Is he looking at depth charts, or who is committed where at this point?

COACH POWERS: No, nope. He is a very confident kid and he doesn't look at that kind of stuff.

Is there any psychology around the program you visit last prior to making a decision?  I mean in the concept of self selection (ie. psychologically that's where you want to go so you want that to be your final impression prior to making a decision?).

Ah but then there are also the factors of primacy and recency; the first pitch often sways the deal, and the last pitch also tends to have a big influence, but if I remember correctly, of the two the most important is primacy, because recency must dislodge primacy to have an effect.

Seriously.

Just curious, if a recruit(hopefully Mr Wilson)  enrolls early at Michigan, can he be counted torwards the previous years recruiting class, leaving open another spot on this years class? I do know that it will take attrition just to get a full class of 25, but if we have up to 3 early enrollers, could we have up to 28 recruits this class? Btw, I do like recruiting kids who are ahead of the game academically, who put themself in a positon to choose whether to early enroll or not. Student/Athlete ftw. GO BLUE

Yes, we could count up to 3 early enrollees against last year's class. Now that's assuming we take a class of 26-28 and that seems unlikely. But since we only took 20 last year, we could count 3 guys back and take 28 this year provided there's room in the 85 overall count.

85 is the hard overall cap. But the Big Ten already has in place something similar to what the SEC just adopted in that 25 is the cap per signing class.

The exception to that is you can backdate up to three early enrollees to the previous class provided there's room in the previous classes 25 yearly limit. Since we took 20 last class, we could theoretically sign 28 this class, and count 3 early enrollees to 2011, and the breakdown would end up as 23/25 in 2011 and 2012 as opposed to 20/28.

The yearly cap isn't going to be a factor for this class, we could sign a full one, it's the 85 overall that's the problem. We only have 18 slots open right now under that cap, with 14 commits. So there will have to be attrition in order for us to sign a 25-man class, as it's been speculated that we're looking for.

Although you're correct, I don't think those two exceptions were part of the discussion.  Assuming all your guys qualify (which almost all the time you're assuming if you give them an LOI) and you don't grey-shirt any guys (which Michigan doesn't ever do) you cannot take 28 guys in one class if less than 3 of them early enroll.

In other words, if you sign 26+ guys to LOIs in Feb (since EEs don't do that) you need to hope one or more of them don't qualify, which is a bad position to be in.

Sounds like he has no clear favorites between the final 3, meaning our chances are 30-40% (with maybe a slight edge due to Powers and proximity to home.)

With Reeves ruling Michigan out, Morgan off the radar, it'll be interesting to see if more offers for DBs come out if (I say IF) Wilson chooses ND/PSU...  Will the coaches stick with the 3 recruits committed, wait unitl senior year performances can be evaluated to extend additional offers, or immediately find other DBs to offer?.

Speaking of enrolling early, do we have any commits who have already said they want to? It seems like with so many early commitments, a lot of them want to get on the field right away.

that he might be able to enroll early. To me, that indicates a guy that has his act together. Some players, we wonder if they will even qualify academically, so I am always impressed when someone comes along that has it together to the point where he can play early. It says a lot about him off the field.

For his guidance with Wilson. I'm sure it would kill him (and me as well) to see Wilson pick ND, but it sounds like he's not going all Ginn, Sr. on the kid and I respect that. Go Blue, Jarrod!

This is the recruit I want more than any recruit we're in on, or at least any non-DT (guys like Shittu, Jones and Pipkins top the list).  He would be a great addition to what looks like an amazing defense in a few years.

I can confirm virtually everything that BILG has posted, and many current and former Ohio State players are very concerned that the NCAA will find out about Ginn, Tressel, and the agent they utilized. Word is Gene Smith actually threatened Tressel's job regarding the issue. Gene Smith and bowtie knew about everything.

There is no way Gee and Smith knew about what you are implying if it is even true. As much as I love the shit they are going through, what you are saying would be some SMU level shit and beyond nearly anyone's comprehension.

I think a lot of people on this board and elsewhere need to sit back and stop throwing out so many wild accusations. If people keep up these rumors they are going to spiral so far out of control that people will soon have Tressel responsible for the JFK assassination.

BTW, you should probably read your tagline before making posts like these.

As did you. Seems that's where the similarities between us end. I would go all "BTW DERP DERP I'd quit preaching about topics you know nothing about," while acting like a pompous jackass over some cable lines, but I'll hold back. Or try. I know so much dirt on that program that you'd be applauding my discretion if you had the slightest clue what was coming. This is where I'd tell the story about Terrelle Pryor smashing his car into a multiple other cars after getting behind the wheel drunk and simply walking away, but hey screw it. There's just no way that happened right? I saved your vapid response for the day this iceburg comes through the fog.

I love how Hoke and Co. have such a clear vision for this class. If we get Wilson, we will have a full secondary just in this class (Richardson, Standifer at CB and Gant at SS). This should definitely help balance things out on the depth chart.
