Seven reasons Harbaugh will never be fired

Submitted by MonkeyMan on September 23rd, 2019 at 7:29 PM

There are 3 things I cannot imagine ever happening: 1. humans living on Mars 2. Kim Kardashian quitting social media and 3. Jim Harbaugh getting fired. If you believe the first, you don't know science. If you believe the second you don't know ego and if you believe that last.. well keep reading.

1. His record ain't that bad: No, he is not beating OSU; yes he is getting blown out more than we like, and yes the team can seem Downy soft at times. But his overall record is actually pretty decent. I can't imagine him ever going lower than 7-5 and most years will be around 10 wins. He's like Dwayne Johnson- not exciting but solid.

2. He's not RR and Hoke: the nightmare... oh how it lingers- behind every door it waits, under every bed it growls. "Dare we try to reach for the sky again?" "No dear...IT could happen again, we can never go back to that house, we can never be sure if it really dead." Would you like some more peas Mr. Harbaugh? Stay as long as you like!

3. People are getting over the "OSU thing": just about every UM related message board has post after post like "They are just on another level now" and "We can't sacrifice our newborns for wins like they do" and "Do you want our coaches to become wife beating, student killing, walking ATM's like their coaches?" We have become a Scarlet and Grey AA group.

4. He does nice things for the students: Hey, what is college football really supposed to be about- sex, money and drugs? No (If you are a player reading this, go back to studying right now). Jim sends them on field trips to other countries, makes them not cheat in school, reads to them at night. Can you imagine Urban doing this without a court order?

5. He looks great: c'mon- don't say this doesn't matter. JH isn't just a "Michigan Man" - he's the JFK version. Looks and image matter kiddo- there is a reason Jim is getting gigs for national commercials while falling on his face. His legion of fans would crush the university like a milk carton if it dared to fire him. Do you really want a red faced Notre Damish pumpkinish thing at the mic? Do you?

6. He is a nice guy: OK- this is a version of the "He does nice things" argument but I have a different argument in between so it's allowed. Ever listen to Jim? He just seems like a "nice" guy- all humble, gentlemanly, "oh have a beer on me"-ish. How do you fire a guy who criticizes himself and feels bad? Its like throwing a homemade Fathers Day card in the trash in front of your kid.

7. The University loves him: culturally, politically, socially, and existentially: Jim fits Michigan. Its as though the entire first floor of every building on campus should be painted Khaki. He is a true blue celeb in a blue, blue place. The legions will turn off NPR and scale the walls in silken scarves and lattes if he is threatened. This wouldn't matter if the other six points above weren't true- but they are!

8. What if he succeeds somewhere else after being fired?: Damn....well, damn

So there it is- my reasons. I really do not think he will be fired and will chug on as long as he wants, like the Little Khaki that Could. BTW- I realize that there are 8 reasons listed here in the post while my title states 7- this is an oh so clever trap to lure in the lazy person who doesn't read my post thoroughly and find this warning. Whack them like a mole at the State Fair if you see 'em in the comments section- free fun for you.

And NOT firing him may be the wisest course anyway- JH seems like the kind of coach who if he just gets LUCKy and finds the right QB- may take it all the way and prove them all wrong. And even if he doesn't- there might be a field trip to North Korea to look forward to.

If you think the fanbase reaction to the wisc game was intense, you ain't seen nothing yet.  The next bad game and/or loss is going to plunge us into Oct/Nov 2014 territory.  This is the kind of shit that doesn't just get a head coach on the hot seat, but starts getting people asking questions about the AD too.

Depends on how things go. If we beat Rutgers, Iowa, and Illinois comfortably and lose narrowly to Penn State (or win all four of those by any margin and then lose to Notre Dame) people won't go nuts.

On the other hand, if we lose to Iowa or Illinois and/or get blown out by Penn State, people will go nuts.

I think we handle Iowa- their coach is much less genius in Ann Arbor than at home.

Penn State doesn't look that good really- but we suck at away games against a decent team

ND is a winnable game- I worry about their defense though playing pinball wizard with Shay

MSU has regressed since Dantonio's big contract upgrade (funny how often that happens) = win

OSU is probably a loss but who knows?

Maryland is what has me scared- they are a true bi-polar team and if we get them on a day they are off their meds then look out. Plus it is an away game. This is the game that has the biggest chance of making JH looking like a disaster

We probably end 8-4 to 10-2

Just lol man...Absent a turn around, the likes of which I have never seen in watching 42 years of football:

Rutgers - W
Iowa - Toss Up
Illinois - W
Penn State - L
Notre Dame - L and hide the children
Maryland - Toss Up
Michigan State - L and hide the children
Indiana - Toss Up
Ohio State - L and hide the children

End up: 6-6 with a chance for 7-5.
8-4 would be a dream.

Agreed,

Can anyone honestly tell me after they saw (and felt) what happened with Rich Rod and then Hoke that we would be, without taking a huge chance, better off with rolling the dice on anyone but Saban (not available) than sticking with Harbaugh and just letting him run his ship without pissing him off so bad he'll leave?

Because everyone's all talking about firing him, but he's never been fired. This isn't a guy who sticks around to the bitter end without making any changes. Look at his history, he'll try to do what he thinks is best to win, and if the fans and/or leadership start to even remotely turn on him, he's got another option in the wings.

And ESPN is still trying to desperately #stretcharmstrong hold that door open for him.

Can’t fire him. He’s a legend in AA. A lot of football left. Any 1 loss top 20 team could run the table and win the CFP’s. Hard to get over the talent disparity though. Gotta be impressive wins. Blow out nd, and your in biz ness ☃️⛄️☃️⛄️☃️

I agree. Although many of the people in the thread I started with the same sentiment disagreed.

Those people are wrong.

4 full seasons coached. 3 of them with 10 wins. This after taking over a program that was pounding on death's door for nearly a decade.

He's not going anywhere unless he wants to. And I'm fine with it. He'll get us to the mountain top eventually.

Yep, JFW, and in 2005 everyone thought 2006 was going to show a torpedoed UM team that had nothing left with our old ways of doing things with what at least one pundit literally referred to as a "midget" at running back and a statue for a quarterback and we had 11 wins and nearly took down OSU in the horseshoe with a Heisman quarterback.

Let's everyone calm down. I hate to use that team in Lansing as an example but how many times have we thought they've been done with all the problems they have? Somehow that curmudgeon has brought a team of dysfunctional rapists back from the brink every time. Harbaugh has 3 ten win seasons and a BCS (scrimmage) bowl win in 4 years and we're already talking about spiking his morning coffee with terpentine.

Let's calm down everyone.

I agree that Harbaugh won’t get fired from Michigan. However I’m gonna disagree about the looks good part. Sometimes he looks downright goofy with big ears sticking out from under his hat.

Also, that’s really a dumb reason for not firing a coach.

Context:

Remember the "Michigan needs a New Carr with Les Miles" bit that was going around in 2007?

This kind of thinking got the program RichRod and then Hoke. I am not saying there are not issues with the current team. They need fixing but running the guy who took you out of a giant fcuking hole that was the Hoke era may not be the answer. Let the season play out first.

I disagree.

  • RR averaged 5 wins per season (.405 overall) and didn't have the full support of the school.
  • Hoke averaged 7.75 wins (.607 overall) and got worse every year.
  • Harbaugh has averaged 9.5 wins (.727 thus far) with three 10-win seasons in four years which hadn't happened since the late 90's.

We are absolutely in a better position now. No, they haven't looked good three games in to year 5 and that is concerning (they've looked downright bad) but they could still turn it around and get a 8/9-win season (including the bowl). Yes, we'll all be disappointed but how soon we forget 3-8, 5-7 during the RR era and Hoke's 7-6 and 5-7 years to end his tenure.

While we may not like that, the reality is Michigan has never been a perennial 10+ win program. Yes, they've had them here and there but the best stretch in (modern) Michigan football was '71-'80 where they won 10+ games in 8/10 seasons under Bo.

The ONLY time Michigan has ever put together five consecutive 10-win seasons was 1901-1905 when Yost took over. (DISCLAIMER: Yost only played 10 games once in a season after that stretch so who knows what would have happened if Michigan played full seasons)

So, no things don't feel right but they are not as grim as they were under RR/Hoke and quite frankly we're on par for what Michigan football has been since the early 1900's (after Yost) which is an 8/9 win team that has spurts of 10+ seasons.

Thank you for this. Growing up a Michigan fan in the '90s, the threat (and almost guarantee) of losing a few games a season meant that the games were uncertain and every win felt like it meant something, or at least was a potential hurdle averted. Going 9-4 isn't what you dream of, but it's a respectable, solid showing. Going 3-8 sucks. It meant every week brought more pain, and even lesser rivals were coming out of the woodwork to gloat.

Totally agree the program is in better shape now, actually a strong turnaround.  If we can get another 5+ years from Harbaugh and have him groom a successor, that would be ideal. He will eventually break thru to a B1G title and the CFP.  But getting to the NC game looks daunting given the way recruiting works in college football.

The issue fans have is one of expectations. He took a bad Stanford to national prominence with 12 wins.  He took lowly San Fran to the Super Bowl.  Fans expected to see Jim take Michigan to 11+ win seasons with B1G titles and a trip to the NC game by year 5.  And folks see 10 wins as the floor under Harbaugh, not 8 wins.

I was hoping for the same, but 10 win seasons are still enjoyable.  Plenty of happy moments to offset the disappointments.   Still want to get over the OSU hump, but that may take more time given Justin Fields looks legit.

I accept everything in this post... except why are you so sure people will never live on Mars?

If you are saying that, by the time technology is sufficient to live on Mars, we will have moved on to another target (hollowed out asteroid colony ship to next solar system?), then OK.

But it seems bold to say that we will never have the adaptive technology. I suspect that Jack Harbaugh has an opinion on this.

I'm not saying you're all wet here -- Harbaugh does have some things in his favor.  I am saying that "never" is a word you have to be very careful about using.

When the stadium does not have over 100,000 fans in it on a football Saturday is when Harbaugh will get canned...and if the clown shows continue to appear when playing against a team with a pulse it is going to happen sooner than some think. I’ll be darned if I am going to continue paying the ridiculous price for football season tickets only to watch boring, garbage-filled football.

Harbaugh is not an untouchable. Losing changes everything.

The stadium will have those fans. A great many people go to UM games for reasons having little to do with the current record. They go for tailgating with friends, tradition, something to do with family, bar hopping afterwards, corporate giveaways, etc. The die hard, win at all costs fans are a much smaller group than you would imagine. What else is there to do in Michigan? (ducks for cover)

Agree 100%. The coordinators will go before Jim does. He took a crappy NFL franchise to the Super Bowl. He turned around two college programs. It's safe to say he knows how to coach. We fucking couldn't beat Toledo at home before he got here, we got shutout for the first time in 30+ years before he got here, we lost at Rutgers before he got here. Did I mention that we couldn't beat Toledo at home?! We were in a very bad place. We are currently not where we want to be, but we have got stability now. He just needs to build on that stability. Also - need to mention, I have never seen a coach get so many unlucky breaks, weird scheduling, and freaky injuries to key players. It's so bizarre. I'm a little scared about this season for a number of reasons, but as long as we beat the teams we should beat - we will be fine.

The Weird injuries part has me thinking. Is there a problem with Michigan's S&C program?  It just seems like the team has key injuries each year and it usually seems to be injuries to players that are expected to blow up each year.

Example: Black last year and DPJ this year.  Gary played hurt through the second half of last season. Patterson seems to be playing hurt this year.  The list goes on and on.  Does Michigan have more than the average number of injuries?

( I may have posted this on another MGoBlog thread or it may have been in Facebook group.  I apologize if this is a repeat question.)

This year Michigan has caught the injury bug, here is the long list of injured/limited starters:

  • OT - Runyan, Stueber, even Mayfield is reported as "banged-up"
  • QB - Patterson, McCaffery
  • RB - Wilson, Charbonnet
  • WR & PR - DPJ
  • DL - Jeter, Dwumfour
  • LB - Ross

I don't recall a list this long to key positions for Michigan maybe forever.

The fact that you felt the need to reassure everyone (including yourself) that this couldn't possibly happen means you know deep down that it's very possible indeed.
