Game Day Weather

Aaaand WE'RE BACK!!! It’s Fall and all things pumpkin spice are in the grocery stores, students are on campus, Spirit Halloween store signs are already popping up, ok you get it. It’s actually officially Meteorological Fall, it’s September - aka slow your roll hoodie-lovers it’s still warm outside lol! We're pretty used to some heat in these early season games and this one will be no different! With a warm front to the northeast it's a mild start to the morning and warm afternoon. A cold front moves through this weekend which will bring in some scattered rain chances, and cool us down, but luckily since this is an earlier game we shouldn't have any issue with getting the game in. C’mon blue, let’s start the season right and beat Colorado State!

Tailgating

It hasn’t been a bad start to September and that trend continues today! That sun comes up at 7:03 and with a noon game, the early bird gets the worm! And the good parking spots so get up and at ‘em! It’ll be a bright and sunny start to the day with a light breeze and mid 60s. As we head toward the mid-morning hours we’re already into the lower 70s, so maybe get that coffee iced! If you grabbed the long sleeves for the tailgate make sure to leave that shirt in the car because we are going to warm up fast for this game! Make sure if you’re sensitive to the sun you grab the sunscreen. We’ll see higher UV levels Saturday and it’s something to keep in mind if you’ll be sitting in the sun for the game.

Kickoff

With a noon kickoff, expect temps to keep warming up! We’ll be at 82 degrees with a breeze around 5mph out of the SW – just light enough to rustle the leaves on the trees. We’ll have lots of sun and just a few passing clouds for the first part of the game so hopefully you remembered your hat or sunglasses!

Halftime

Around 85 as the band takes the field! Fun fact: it’s the band’s 125th season and the theme for the halftime show is Summer love. At this point you’ll be Summer loving some water so send someone to get one or two to get you through the 3rd and 4th quarters! No shame, it’s hot and muggy. And winds are staying light, out of the SW, the whole time so not much relief there. We’ll see sun and clouds for the second half of the game. There’s a slight chance to see a spotty shower toward the end of the game, but rain will be very scattered and we have the much better chance at staying dry.

Post-Game

Mid 80s walking out of the gates with the win! We’ll continue to see some sunshine along with some clouds, and that ever so slight chance of rain, to finish out the day. If you’re heading out to dinner temps will start to drop back into the lower 80s around 7pm, sooo maybe go back and re-apply that deodorant before heading out? K thanks the rest of us thank you :D We’ll thankfully fall to near 70 into the late night, and into the mid 60s by last call (you’re always a champ if you make it to this on noon game day nights). If you’ll be out late, there’s a better chance to see a rain shower with the cold front moving through. This cools us down for Sunday though – highs Sunday stay in the mid 70s. Go Blue!

CHRISTINA BURKHART IS THE MORNING METEOROLOGIST FOR ABC IN FLINT, MI. SHE GREW UP IN ANN ARBOR AND ASSOCIATES SATURDAYS WITH MICHIGAN FOOTBALL. GO BLUE!!

I'd love to know what changed with respect to the forecast. I mentioned this in a thread earlier in the week, but last Sunday or so the forecast for tomorrow was saying high 70s, and then the next day it was saying high 80s. I get that Midwestern weather can be *shruggie*, but that seemed like a pretty drastic shift even by Midwestern standards...

Weather forecast computer models have a time zero initiation of the all of the fronts, clouds, rain areas and temperature differences. So, at 6 to 7 days out, these particular conditions are the projections and a lot can go wrong. What was once a pleasant day 6 days ago (for Game Day) changed because the warm and cool fronts are moving faster so the cooler air that was in place over SE MI moved out quicker and warmer air came up faster.

It gets to be a bigger challenge when there's rain, storms and even a snow event forecasted 5-7 day out and it either does happen or turns out to be a nice day because the rain event came and went or comes the day after the game.

The human forecaster has to decide what the trend is or make a forecast of the forecast so as to stay a step ahead of the forecast models. Plus there a half dozen weather models to look at and each will have a different solution. Hope this helps and be sure to track future games 6 and 7 days to get an understanding or this process (the night game next weekend).
