Update 8/19: Linked to articles on AR CB Darius Winston, FL S Angelo Hadley (video, fluff), FL CB Josh Robinson, MA OL Brennan Williams, VA OL Morgan Moses, TX QB Shavodrick Beaver. Did Marcus Hall drop us or not drop us (and does it matter)? (As per usual, some links from VB.)

Removed GA WR Braxton Lane (chose baseball).

Fluff on the Pahokee kids.

Moved TX K Anthony Fera to committed.

Editorial Opinion:

Winston probably to Mississippi, for some reason

This got asked a thousand times in the chat yesterday despite it  getting answered twice: it appears AR CB Darius Winston is staying in the south. He suddenly moved up his announcement date to September 5th and has canceled his scheduled official visits except for one. He wasn’t shy about letting the cat out of the bag in this SuperPrep article:

What stands out about Ole Miss?

"I just love that whole coaching staff. I feel like they are going to turn it around at Ole Miss. I would love to be a part of that. I plan on taking an official visit to Ole Miss on Labor day weekend, when they play Memphis."

Anymore official visits on tap?

"That is it."

Should people read anything into that?

"I guess you could say that, yes sir (laugh)."

Frustratingly, Ole Miss appears to be the destination. Someone in Winston’s camp must be super best friends with Houston Nutt.

Fera Commits

So that’s lame. Not lame: the commitment of Texas kicker Anthony Fera. If you remember the zen peace you achieved watching Zoltan the Inconceivable sky punts on youtube, you will want to watch this practice video of Fera:

I am the world’s greatest expert on these matters and declare him a future first-round pick. Others agree: Fera is one of only a few kickers to pick up a third star from Rivals and is their #2 rated kicker overall. ESPN gives him an 80—a better score than Will Campbell received—and says thusly:

Good leg extension and follow through on kickoffs. Consistent field goal kicker that demonstrates the ability to make field goals well into the 40's distance wise; longest is 58 yards.

Also there is this from their ticker:

"Fera gets all 230 pounds into his kicks. He has an extremely strong leg and powers his kickoffs into the endzone and has made several field goals of forty plus yards including a 58 yarder in competition. The Under Armor All-American kicker also is a decent punter and can be used as a back-up if needed at the collegiate level."
The 230-pound kicker was 15 for 16 on field goal attempts as a junior and had a long of 58 yards.

That guy said Rodriguez would “get a kick” out of Fera, though, so you might want to ignore him. Or kick him in the giblets. Either way.

Specialist offers are relatively rare, so Fera’s collection of Michigan, Penn State, Kansas State, and Ohio State (grayshirt) is impressive, especially because Ohio State just took a kicker last year. He’s one of the top kicking prospects out there this year and has to be the favorite to start when Kicking Competency Lopata’s graduates. Bryan Wright appears to have washed out; Michigan will probably carry two kickers in 2009 and not extend him a fifth year.

Beaver enrolling early

This Free Press article on TX QB commit Shavodrick Beaver has quotes like this…

“It’s not about getting a shot as soon as I get there, it’s about going in there, lifting weights and getting stronger and faster with the team,” Beaver said. “Then my shot will come with the competition and everything. I’m just going to be competing everyday, working hard and going in to lead the team.”

…and one piece of what I believe is new information: Beaver will join Kevin Newsome and enroll early.

Guy who’s probably not coming here prolongs the tease

Conflicting information on OH OL Marcus Hall. TSN says we got dropped:

Hall, rated the No. 7 offensive tackle prospect in the nation by Rivals.com, has whittled it down to Ohio State, Illinois and Southern Cal, he revealed to Sporting News Today.

Bucknuts says we didn’t get dropped and that USC never even offered:

"I want to say it's down to three (schools). It's somewhat down to three. It's Illinois, Ohio State and Michigan. But I still have my eyes open."
Hall added that LSU and Miami-FL sit behind his three favorites. Additionally, the Trojans now seem out on contention, after not extending an offer.

The ESPN article is from two days later so it’s likely to be the accurate one. Probably moot given Hall’s presence at OSU feeder Glenville.

Guy who doesn’t know what conference UCF is in has Michigan offer

Keep an eye on FL CB Josh Robinson from inappropriately-named powerhouse Plantation. He’s moving up the Rivals rankings and reports a Michigan offer. I don’t think this report of a Florida offer…

Robinson’s top two schools are UCF and USF right now, but he could generate more interest during his senior season. Florida and Michigan have also offered Robinson.

… is accurate but he’s at least got serious interest. Oh, and apparently favors USF and a CUSA school over, like, Michigan. Hopefully that changes if/when Michigan can get him on campus.

Etc.: MA OL Brennan Williams has dropped Maryland; Pahokee kids run up a dike.

I just looked up Wright, he was a 2 star to rivals.  Fera and his uber awesome 3 stars kid Wright's ass.  Which reminds me: OMG another 3 star!  Run for the hills before the 3 star flood arives!

According to Bob Lichtenfels scouts regional recruiting manager, and other source that most of us have access to, Kevin Newsome is now decommitted, and opening his recruitment back up.

wright was better than epstien. epstein was the 2nd coming ('sept he's jewish i assume). i remember thinking at the time that he was the 5th best recruit in that class behind fargas, henson, terrell, walker.

The studiously non-commital comments from him didn't fill me with confidence he wasn't wavering. If he doesn't want a degree from the University of Michigan that's his choice, not to mention his loss. Tate, come on down.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it. He said he was committed! He put an end to all of those rumors of him decommitting! He lied to us. He said he wouldn't leave! (sob)

He might really mean it, as this opens up a space for Tate. I would much rather have Newsome.  That really sucks if it's really true.

I'm with tim 100%. I don;t think it's ok to have forcier or smith come in instead. I'd really prefer Newsome, and the "recommits" mgoboard post that just rolled up a second ago might be my saving grace. I want Newsome on my team next year.

Newsome was the only one who knew how to touch me the right way, and his nipples were just the right size.  If he won't come back, then I hope that he finds someone who will appreciate him as much as I did.

We want recruits who will make it in the academics as well. Newsome, on paper is a perfect fit. Forcier is as well.  There seems to be preference involved inbetween the lines with the QB recruits. I think Beaver could do it all. I really do. But given time. If one thinks that you can go from High School to Michigan, without a very cool and collected supporting cast of team oriented returning starters surrounding you, well you'd be wrong. Neither of these guys can win the Big Ten running the ball. If you're a one trick pony, you'll feel like Juice Williams in the Rose Bowl. Alone, and on an island with a coach kicking you under the bus. Forcier on tape has an understanding of game tempo and ball management and he doesnt seem to get overly emotional. That's a big plus for any QB. There's a lot to like about that. And he integrates himself well. Early enrolling players have a persona or personality, however you look at it, that wreaks of,"I just want to contribute." But while we look down the road to our,"Saved by The Bell," recruiting class we need to win games in the here and now with this squad. Wins this year will lock in the 2010 class. Wins in a down year, create the rally, they create the momentum. In life there's never a perfect moment, there's just the moment.

we didn't lose a recruit. the verbal these days means jack (especially when they 'verbal' in march), so we never really had one in the 1st place. as the comrade said, a verbal just means that you know who the competition is and that they have a leader. odds are, we're still the leader or at the very least in a small group of 2-3 he is looking at. anyone who commits before summers June camp, I don't take all that seriously unless he's instate. and even then, not very.

bottom line: the earlier they 'verbal,' the more time there is for them to decommit.

With Newsome gone I might as well fellate myself for the next 4 years because no one else will do it now. My Michigan fandom is ruined by this. I think I'll start liking MSU because they hang on to their 2 and 3 stars and we can't even handle this kid who OBVIOUSLY can't past. Stupid Virginians. We should just kick Brandon Minor off the team for this too. Who needs them?

Wait I just got an email update from scout saying newsome is "back on the market." What's news about that? Seriously......That should'nt surprise anyone, if it's true.

How do you know any of that? Do you know Tate? Do you know Newsome? How do you know that Tate "loves" Michigan?

Character assassination of an 18 year old kid for changing his mind on something by people who have no. fucking. knowledge. at. all. is the one thing that makes my blood fucking boil. You're assigning positive attributes to Forcier merely because he hasn't rejected Michigan. You think he's coming here because he loves the school and wants to make the fans happy? Fuck that - if he comes here, it will be because he thinks Michigan will give him the best shot to make the pros - same as every single player on the fucking roster.

And Newsome is self-absorbed why? Because he doesn't want to come to Michigan? Like Pryor? This business of acting like everyone who spurns us is a horrendous person is beyond the lowest form of navel-gazing self-obsession.

OPS and I decided to get as obnoxious as possible.  As usual, his response was funnier than mine.

Michigan will be back in my good graces soon enough, and McQueen will probably be back then.  Either that or a box of Tide, the favorite laundry detergent of the bourgeois capitalist West.

You blindly follow Rodriguez and his vile henchman Barwis, but they are mere mortals.  They will eventually fail you, because they will eventually die (Barwis, like Trotsky before him, seems ripe for an icepick to the back).  The only thing that will not fail you is yourself, Mighiganders!  Cast your blind faith in these false Gods aside and bow before the one true God, the almighty Ruble!  You can help yourself, Michigan Man, and you will help yourself, and you will start here today by joining the league of sophisticated nations and embracing capitalism as the one true way!

Comrades, REVOLUTION is much greater than a SINGLE MAN! Comrade Rodriguez is but our current vessel for success! At the will of history he too will learn he is not stronger than the people that he serves! REVOLUTION is within us, Michiganders! Do not listen to the imperialist ethanol peddlers that wish to drag you into competition and servility alongside them! They make look prosperous, but it is a potemkin village - a sham of the highest order! Fighting amongst yourselves will lead you only to sure failure! Do not abandon the cause! Together we are stronger than any individual!
