Report: Harbaugh Remains Comment Count

Seth February 2nd, 2022 at 7:40 PM

After a moribund 24 hours, Schefter dropped a Schef-Bomb.

According to multiple reports, Harbaugh left Ann Arbor with goodbyes and expected to take the Vikings head coaching job if offered. Apparently it wasn’t offered, or else the meeting convinced Harbaugh that Minnesota’s situation is a worse bet than coming back to Michigan and beating Ohio State again.

Michigan will happily have him back, and resume their search for a defensive coordinator. With Harbaugh’s interest in returning to the NFL established, preparing (or hiring) a coach-in-waiting might not be a terrible idea.

Can we rename some more buildings for Stephen Ross. True hero here. Dude loves his university more than his own business. Basically only reason we have Harbaugh or hundreds of millions flowing into the department.

Very glad Coach Harbaugh is back !  Hard to know all that really happened.  Actions speak louder than words.  Encouraged by the statement I read that said Coach told our AD he will be here as long as Michigan wants him.  Then again, actions speak louder than words.  At this point, it would not surprise me if he stays at Michigan until he retires, nor would it surprise me if he looks at the NFL again at some point down the line.  I do think this was a process and crossroads decision for him he wanted to explore before the window closes.  Most of the NFL head coaches hired these days seem younger and younger to me, which may just be a sign of my age.  Go Blue !  Stay well MGoBloggers !

Seth — the second Schefter tweet really dispels your comment “With Harbaugh’s interest in returning to the NFL established, preparing (or hiring) a coach-in-waiting might not be a terrible idea.”

It does, but Harbaugh hasn't put pen to paper. Either he will need a contract with a buyout that makes him probably a no-go for any NFL team, or he will need to solidify a departure scenario. He actually did a really good job in hiring Clink/Bellamy/Hart last winter and Elston this winter in setting Michigan up for continuity if he left, which tells you he was thinking this was going to happen all year.

Harbaugh said he would listen to the NFL and he did. He was "linked" to many jobs but many were likely clickbait. The only thing that matters now is moving forward.

I do NOT like this situation one bit..Are we now going to have to go thru this every year?  WE stuck with him thru 7 yrs of very little to cheer for, he has ONE good year and hes ready to bolt after we stuck with him? This cannot be good for recruiting..Harbaugh needs to make a decision..Here for life or move on..if he doesnt want to be here do we want him?  so are we stuck with each other?? this is NOT good for the Michigan football program and Harbaugh needs to fix this once and for all

Key words in all these articles - (i) according to rumors, (ii) sources (never named) say, (iii) might and (iv) should.

In other words, everyone is reading their own private tea leaves.

I may be old fashioned, but I go by the "I'll believe it when I see it" mantra.

Adam Schein on mad dog sports thought that the Vikings made a major mistake. He thinks Harbaugh although Quirky is a brilliant coach, and he would have the Vikings competing in a year. Also reported to him that he wanted complete roster control and that minority owners did not want to grant this. I am glad to have him back

Jim did his little dance with the NFL.  The music stopped mid-song. He’s baaaack! Jim staying is probably the best outcome for Michigan football, at least in the short term. I can’t imagine the players wanted a different result  Seems like the coaching staff will remain intact.  Let’s find a def coordinator and move on.

On a side note. . . Anyone else notice Tuck seems to be ever so slightly closing the recruiting gap?

Regarding the search for a Defensive Coordinator, I would hope that the coaching staff as a whole took notes of Mike McDonald's schemes, coaching style and overall philosophy because that s#!t seems to have worked a treat!

I'm not against a coach in waiting, but he told Warde (according to Schefter in a follow up tweet) that this would not reoccur and that he would be at Michigan as long as they'd have him. What has Jim done that people think he isn't a man of his word? People somehow keep extrapolating more than there is with Jim because he's quirky and doesn't care what others think.
