the offensive line will no longer be guided by Ed Warinner [Patrick Barron]

Report: Exit Ed Warinner, Hello Ron Bellamy Comment Count

Ah, so that explains why Michigan officially announced only the defensive half of the coaching staff last week:

The 2021 coaching staff is evidently complete, and it's expected to shake out something like this, as Sam Webb reports that Sherrone Moore will take over the offensive line and add a co-offensive coordinator title:

Head Coach/QBs: Jim Harbaugh

Offensive Coordinator: Josh Gattis
Co-OC/Offensive Line: Sherrone Moore
Running Backs: Mike Hart
Wide Receivers: Ron Bellamy
Tight Ends/Special Teams: Jay Harbaugh

Defensive Coordinator: Mike Macdonald
Co-DC/Cornerbacks: Maurice Linguist
Defensive Line: Shaun Nua
Linebackers: Brian Jean-Mary
Safeties: George Helow

I'm not sure this was the initial plan; there'd been rumors of a coach leaving to make room for Bellamy but until Urban Meyer was hired by Jacksonville that coach wasn't supposed to be Ed Warinner. Webb reports there's a chance Warinner sticks around in an analyst role but he'd be coveted as an offensive line coach if he still wants that job somewhere; he's one of the best in the country.

While Moore has overseen tight ends since breaking into coaching, he played offensive guard for Oklahoma. He's a little smaller than he was in his playing days.

From Moore's official bio:

Moore played two seasons along the offensive line for the University of Oklahoma (2006-07). He played in 14 games at offensive guard and helped the Sooners win two Big 12 Championships and played in two BCS bowl games. Before joining the Sooners, Moore was a two-year starter at Butler County (Kansas) Community College. He was a member of two conference championship teams the posted a 20-3 record. Moore earned second-team all-conference accolades.

Meanwhile, Bellamy is fresh off coaching West Bloomfield and Michigan-bound running back Donovan Edwards to the first state championship in program history. He played receiver for M from 1999-2002, starting 25 games, so he has no shortage of familiarity with the school, and he should be an immediate asset as a recruiter, particularly in-state.

This is a very young and recruiting-focused staff. We'll have more on it when the news isn't freshly breaking on a Saturday night.

There is no content after the jump.

It obviously wasn't intentional, but it's important and noteworthy: The majority of coaches on our new staff are African-Americans. We also have the only Black head basketball coach in the Big Ten.

I can't remember a time when a HC was retained and there was this much assistant turnover. This is gonna be an interesting year. I think they've picked up a number of guys who should be strong recruiters, like Hart, Bellamy, and Mo while some guys with less than stellar recruiting prowess have departed. I hope UM shows enough in 2021 to take advantage of this, but playing sub .500 football probably won't do it so we need to actually develop some guys, hit the portal, and/or do a better job with play calling, scheme, and installation.

Jim better bring in a top 5 recruiting class with all his chips on the table like this. Better go find the 2022 Bectons and Leatherwoods and sign them this time to overcome all this coaching inexperience at the various positions.  MacDonald, you just have to bring another two Devin Bushes and a Mo Hurst, ok?

Fine.  Whatever.  Young and good at recruiting has been missing for a awhile under Harbaugh.    For all his accolades Warinner's o-lines weren't what I'd consider passing the eye test as great, outstanding, dominating, etc.

I agree. Warinner may be the greatest coach ever but how many people on this board truly know if that’s true? We’ve heard it for years so it must be true, in perpetuity, I guess. The group o-line play has always underperformed relative to the individual talent (re: NFL draftees), in my opinion.

Looked at the transfer portal, there isn’t much of anything in there for dline. There are 2 four star corners from Texas. We need to go all in for Benny, Rooks and Tywone Malone for the dline. Possibly get those two from Texas at corner.

This is a mistake.  Their O-line was a clusterfuck before Warinner got there.  I’m all for recruiting, but this is a mistake.  Let Jean-Mary go instead.

With Sam's mention as possible analyst, it tells me maybe Warinner wants to semi retire. And being analyst is exactly that. No need to recruit.

Excellent recruiters should line M up with a nice incoming freshman class in 2023.  A handful see the field but by 2025 after that group gets some experience this should pay off.  Awesome!

It is amazing how many experts know better what is needed for a coach....Moore cannot possibly know how to coach...MUST have 20 yrs coaching the position, yada, yada yada.

Honestly, getting the kids excited and believing in the coaches and following their lead is probably more important than just the specific scheme.

These coaches are not engineering the next mission to Mars, they are trying to get kids to buy into the program, be excited about what they are doing, and go out and play hard for 60 minutes.

If this staff doesnt start immediately recruiting at a high level, higher than the last few seasons, then its pretty much time to panic. Not sure who on the current staff is any good at actually coaching so were going to need an upward tick in talent very quickly.

That said Im not sure if a bunch of kids who wont be on campus or competing for time for the next couple years are going to do much to help JH and the current staff stay employed here.

If Warriner wanted to leave to join Urban, I get it... if he was pushed out, that would be much more of a headscratcher imo...

Warriner was a solid coach; have no idea what Moore is as an OLine...

Bellamy seems seems similar to the Partridge hire in that it help secure Edwards... Don't have a problem with it, but it is a move that many Michigan fans would frown upon if another school did it. Hopefully, Bellamy proves his coaching/recruiting chops like Partridge did

Any thought that this move has to do with Warriner underperforming in his role as run game coordinator? Our running game last year was so disappointing.

Or is this just a guy choosing to leave?
