Wisconsin played terribly, missing every field goal for the last 10 minutes of the game to allow a 12-point lead to fall to two. To compensate, the officiating might have set a new Trohl Center record for lopsidedness. The difference then, was Michigan, or at least most of Michigan, once again failing to score, play defense, or rebound in another close resume loss.

With Terrance Williams II out with a deep knee bruise, Will Tschetter started at the four. The energy boost he provided however wore off as Wisconsin took advantage of his lack of athleticism (and some Jett mistakes) to start on a 5-0 run of open baskets. Michigan responded with a 6-point run with Dickinson and Tschetter playing high-low, but it was quickly evident that Michigan was playing at best even athletically with the unathletic Badgers.

Hunter Dickinson brought the full heel experience after comments on a podcast about Wisconsin's less-than-gentlemanly style of basketball. He also walked into the stadium wearing a ski mask, commenting they intended to "steal one." What he didn't bring was any rebounding. The Badgers, who barely ever contest the glass on the offensive end, were able to persistently hound Dickinson from behind. All told, Wisconsin collected 15 offensive boards off of their 42 misses (36 percent).

None was more devastating than their last. Michigan had used Wisconsin's long cold spell and an NBA-esque explosion of isolation pullups by Kobe Bufkin to claw back to within two with 44 seconds remaining. As he had all night, Wisconsin's Tyler Wahl missed a hook shot, with Dickinson in position to collect. But UW center Steven Crowl got his arms wrapped up inside just enough to hamper the collection, the ball caromed out to Connor Essegian, and Kobe Bufkin was whistled for a foul while trying to prevent the disaster.

Some of those rebounding follies led to some ludicrously long Wisconsin possessions. Shortly after the Under 12 timeout the Michigan defense managed to force UW into a long contested three with the clock running out. That shot popped up over Jace Howard and Wisconsin reset, but that extra possession led only to a trapped Tyler Wohl, who threw up a prayer versus a triple team that nobody was able to collect until it kneed back out to Wisconsin. Again Wisconsin drove, Tschetter drew contact and fell down trying to get the charge call, but with none coming Joey Baker had to foul. Two possessions later we hit the Under-8 timeout.

Michigan had plenty of opportunities to win even with the embarrassing performance on the glass. The Kenpom prediction of a one-point Michigan win held at the half after Kobe Bufkin hit a pullup three at the end of a clock rundown. Bufkin was by far Michigan's best player, at both ends, while Dickinson was barely better than Crowl, and other matchups, especially on defense, went decidedly for the home team.

Much of that was on the visitors' freshmen routinely getting lost on the Badgers' screens. Both Jett Howard and Dug McDaniel were peeled off after not reacting to Wisconsin's actions. An attempt to play Joey Baker, Will Tschetter, and Hunter Dickinson together exposed their combined athletic limitations. An attempt to go zone left open that same left corner that's been open all season.

One possession before *The One Hunter Really Needed to Come Down With* Michigan had a golden opportunity to tie as the Badgers overplayed Dickinson on the drive, leaving Tschetter all alone in the lane. But Cheddar couldn't get high enough to do more than collect the foul, then missed both free throws. If Juwan Howard's decision to ride with Tschetter over Tarris Reed in those situations was already under question, that sequence didn't help.

It also didn't help that Reed's offense, including his free throw shooting, was looking better than Tschetter's. Even accounting for his significantly larger size, Reed's defense was leagues better than his teammate's.

Matt from Endless Motor's tweet from above was inspired by a pair of post defense possessions while Bufkin's personal 7-0 run cut the lead to 49-55 and forced Wisconsin to use a timeout. Out of the timeout Reed forced a pullup miss, rebounded a Bufkin miss to draw Michigan's first shooting foul, and generated a steal on the other end.

Reed also made both of those attempts from the stripe, the first that Michigan attempted all game, with 6:41 left in the second half.

It must be said that the 12-point lead Wisconsin gave away was built on run of one-sided officiating that set a new low for an already notorious Trohl Center. Tschetter got tagged for one away from the ball two seconds before a shot that was somehow ruled a basket-and-one after review. Will had his own and-one opportunity wiped away earlier when a defender who ran under him on a putback of a Kobe Bufkin airball was ruled before the shot. This extraordinary run of calls and non-calls continued until Jett Howard was stepped under while going for a rebound and went down hard. His father was issued a technical for getting in an official's face, and the ensuing free throws pushed Wisconsin's lead to a dozen, with possession. I'm telling myself this was part of Juwan's punishment, and leaving it at that.

Later on they did give Hunter Dickinson a benefit of the doubt they probably shouldn't have when he got tangled up with Crawl and fell down, which resulted in Crawl's fourth foul just before the Under 4 timeout. Coming back Wisconsin got another multi-shot possession when McDaniel was too short to corral a short three-pointer. Dickinson finally started to get the better of Crawl, drawing two fouls (but making just 1/4 of those shots) in Michigan's next two offensive touches, followed by magnificent defensive possession that ended with a block and a shot clock violation. That set up the Tschetter bunny when Will missed his free throws, which was followed by *The One Hunter Really Needed To Come Down With.*

The Wolverines' final possessions after *TOHRNTCDW* were exemplary of the their struggles this year to close out close games. After Wisconsin cut off Michigan's planned action, Jett Howard drove into traffic, lost control, then managed to snatch the ball back and put in a floater. After UW's Max Klesmit made both free throws to push their lead back to four, Dug McDaniel had the ball poked away at the top of the circle by Hepburn.

Takeaways from this game are as dismal as Michigan's postseason outlook. They have flaws, but so does the Big Ten, and it's reasonable to expect this team to have won a good five or six more of those games than they have. Whether that's luck or some cosmic something or other can't be discerned from watching basketball, however, so that's where I leave you.

We can say a lot about Izzo but allowing a player to wear a ski mask into a game would never happen.

Juwan either is not the role model we hoped he would be or he has no control over this team.  There are very few positive things coming out of this season.  It’s really hard to see Juwan having a future here after next season unless we see a culture change.

Seth, the refs were bad but it isn't worth spending half the game column complaining about them. This team is so poorly coached and falls apart down the stretch every time. There are defensive breakdowns literally every time down the floor. Basic defensive principles elude this team.

This team allowed the 349th-ranked offensive rebounding team to grab 14 boards last night, did a TON of yapping and came out of halftime like they had already won the game. But apparently we have to pass blame to someone else other than the team.

"Lottery Pick" Jett Howard wearing free daddy t-shirt gets outplayed by the #228th ranked freshman Connor Essegian. Dickinson wears a ski mask, acts like they won a National Championship walking to the tunnel at halftime, only to score 3 points in the 2nd Half.

I'm waiting for some type of accountability to be shown for a team that has a Big Ten roster leading .9775!!! recruiting ranking and is 14-12.

Do we think this team isn't coached very well, or the players weren't as good as advertised, or has this team just dialed it in and just going through the motions?

I can't really put my finger on it, but this team is hard to watch, mainly because I feel like they keep blowing opportunities.

They all seem to have extremely weak hands when attempting to rebound with exception of Reed.  Any slight contest to the rebound and the ball goes flying off their hands.  There has to be nobody in the area for them to come down with it.  I don't get it.

Hunter has never had good hands but he seems to lose control of passes and rebounds more this year than ever before. I suppose part of the problem is that his current teammates aren't as skilled as his previous teammates in getting readily catchable passes to him or at keeping their men from getting under the basket and adding their hands to the group poking at the rebounds.

Also, the shot that Jett took but Dickinson thought was a pass number of times a dunk reminds me that there often used to be 2 or 3 of those easy baskets a game. I have noticed opportunities for that this year but I don't recall anyone making the pass. They always just throw up some prayer that has no real chance of going in.

I thought Tarris Reed played pretty well from what I saw (and he hit two foul shots!). And I feel like Bufkin always puts in a good effort.

But man, it's almost perversely intriguing to tune in to see how this team will lose a game down the stretch.  I thought they might actually pull it off last night. But I kept thinking that long run 12-1 run they went on late in the 2nd half really should've been a 17 or 19 point run because Michigan had actually missed a bunch of shots in that stretch as well, including a trio of missed layups by Bufkin, Tshcetter and Dickinson on a single possession. Not giving up a FG for the last 10+ minutes of the game but still not getting the W is a real new and novel way to lose a game.

Eventually these guys have to get tired of losing games like this and play with some anger. It's time to GET PISSED.

Just a couple comments. The Reed vs. Tschetter debate is interesting. It seems everyone with eyeballs thinks Reed should get more minutes. I agree as I have eyeballs. In 13 minutes, Reed grabbed 7 rebounds, had only 1 turnover, and had a steal and a block. That's 7-1+1+1 = 8 possessions generated in 13 minutes. Tschetter managed a 5-2+0+0. That equals 3 possessions in 26 minutes. Reed also scored 6 points to Tschetter's 4, but I'm not that interested in points from the 4. We have Bufkin, Jett and HD to score. If Juwan would only figure out his rotations, we could have 2 of them on the floor at any one time and complement them with some offense from Dug. He's not a take it to the basket guy, obviously, but he has a nice outside shot. The problem is, we play 3 or 4 bench guys at the same time. The result is, Wisconsin's bench players combine for a +27 in 43 minutes and our bench guys combine for a -10 in 32 minutes.

I still think HD should be getting 16 shots a game. This was a tougher matchup for him because Wisconsin has some size, but these offensive sets where he is hanging out beyond the 3 point line setting screens are killing me. And they run 20 seconds off the clock, finally get him in the post, and there's no time to do anything. Finally, the kids (Kobe, Jett and Dug) had a reasonable shooting night (16-34 at the Troll Center is about the best you can expect,) but HD is sub .500 and Joey contributes zero so we lose by a few points.

Some point between December 2019 and March 2020:

MEPHISTOPHELES:  So, I've got a proposition for you.

MGoFAUST: (snarkily) Yeah, so... you're basically the Devil so, hard pass on that, chief

MEPHISTOPHELES:  No, so just hear me out.  So, you're gonna start off the decade with two consecutive romps of OSU in football.  The catch is that...

MGoFAUST: Yup, sign me up!

MEPHISTOPHELES: Um.... you sure? You didn't even hear th....

MGoFAUST: I said what I said.

Hunter had a chance to be one of the most beloved players in UM basketball in recent memory - a guy who stayed all 5 or 6 years and became a team leader, an icon of the program, a real "heart and soul" kind of guy.  Instead he's a joke. He's the "leader" on a team that has no leadership. A caricature of himself. A sideshow.  Pretty sad really, but I don't know any UM fans who will miss him when he's gone.

I appreciate and understand the comment about this team should have won more games, but when you have to say that, it simply means a team just isn't that good. Sometimes, you are what your record shows.

This isn't directed at you but the statement "Sometimes, you are what your record shows." as it drives me nuts...maybe its just me

When are you not what your record says?  I bring this up as people. coaches, etc...always say "we are better than our record"....how does that make sense? A record is a factual thing...the comment is a feelings thing...

Glad I didn't watch this one.  Surprised that Howard let Hunter do some dumb shit pre-game given Howard's own infamous dumb shit moment against Wisconsin. Not surprised that the team was basically unable to score for the final few minutes and lost another game to a crappy Big Ten team.  They certainly shouldn't fire Howard after this season, but people are blind if they don't think that he's made a mess of this one.  Next season will be crucial.

**Just saw the Free Juwan shirt thing.  What a fucking idiot.  I was in the minority that thought it would have been reasonable to fire him over that, but letting his kid wear that shirt is in some ways even dumber than getting super angry in the head of the moment.  This is clown show shit; is someone going to drive a stake into the court later in the season?

Last night felt like the beginning of the end for me. I have been supportive of Juwan, and could even give him a mulligan for this year given the sheer amount of roster turnover (both expected and unexpected).  The trouble, though, is even putting that all aside, roster management and player accountability seems totally lacking - it's exacerbating the team's youth and doesn't seem like it would get better with time.  I am not advocating firing Juwan, as many of the game thread posters are, but I struggle to find the confidence to think this will get better next year.
