1. Men's Basketball vs Michigan State

starts at 1:00

It felt inevitable that this would be another game where Michigan chokes it away it down the stretch... but that didn't happen! Freshman point guard Dug McDaniel was Kenpom MVP, his best game of the season by far. Jett had an off game. Michigan out-rebounds Michigan State which was probably the biggest difference in this game. Not just one person, but the whole team was getting rebounds - clearly there was a team-wide message sent to everybody. Tarris Reed needs to be a starter on this team. If they go 4-1 down the stretch they'd probably end up on the bubble.

2. Men's Basketball vs Wisconsin

starts at 32:39

Wisconsin did not get a basket in the last 10:45 and won, Michigan just didn't have a 3rd scorer in this game. How did Tarris Reed only have 13 minutes? What exactly does this team consistently do well at? Still technically a shot at the tournament but hopes are dim.

3. Hockey vs Ohio State

starts at 44:29

This year, Ohio State is apparently the team that Michigan just can't figure out. Michigan might've looked like the better team for the first 35 minutes in Cleveland but Ohio State's goalie was a giant Velcro barrier. Michigan doesn't have a goalie coach and it showed a little bit this weekend. They gave up six odd-man rushes to Ohio State's zero. Would probably rather play Minnesota at this point.

4. Gimmicky Top Five Of Why We Will Never Do A Watch Along For A Football Game

starts at 1:01:34

The hockey watch-along was very well received! Here's why we'd never do it for a football game! David is convinced that someone would end up getting fired.

Tarris is absolutely an asset but he has to cut down on his fouls if he wants to play more. He has to spell Hunter and play minutes at the 4 with Hunter. It isn’t as simple as “he needs to start.” Tough ask for a true freshman.

The four excuses for not playing Tarris more are inexperience, fouls, turnovers, and free throws. The first is addressed by getting him more minutes. I’ve noticed recently that he’s committing fewer fouls and turnovers, and his FT shooting is improving. I am less concerned about who starts. The rotations are a problem regardless. What I would like to see is Tarris go from ~12 MPG to 20. I think he’s earned that.

I agree he should play more but even with only one foul against Wisconsin he's picked up 18 fouls in 76 minutes played in February.  That absolutely hamstrings how long he can be out there (and also points to him sometimes being out of position or panicking offensively)

What got him (and Tschetter) is that they didn't have those blowouts in the non con to pick up valuable minutes and get acclimated to the college game.  I think he'll see more minutes on this closing stretch but he's gotta play more within himself.

I loved the comment about Dug keeping his usage low despite scoring the first 7 points of the game.  Good observation and the sign of maturity from him.  The consistency is now the challenge for our young players.

I don't think you start Reed given that we don't have a 3rd big and he fouls too much, but I think you bring him in at the U16 timeout and see how it goes.  Or what UMHoops has advocated is that he comes in for Hunter at the U12 and if he is keeping his fouls down you keep him in the game when Hunter returns.  Then you have the entire second half to maximize his minutes if he's staying out of foul trouble.

Pretty wild that you guys covered the entire MSU game without mentioning Kobe's play or Jett's injury.  Kobe hitting that crazy three where he bobbled while going up for the shot decided the game....just ask Izzo who said "he makes that 1 time out of 100."  Such a peach.

Finally, I believe Charles Matthews is the best defensive player I've ever seen.  Franz is a close #2, but I think Matthews is a big reason we think Yaklich was a genius. Franz did a lot of amazing things because of his crazy long arms.  Matthews just locked guys up 1-3.

The problem with Reed as starter is that he has those glaring holes in his game for a team to exploit.  Hunter had a lot of success early as a freshman coming off the bench.  Once he became a starter, teams spent more time preparing for him.

I don’t understand the point of these guys constantly obviously underselling the tournament chances.  They are on the bubble right now.  4-1 to end the season and they are off the bubble and in.  I don’t think they fully understand “the bubble.”

I think it comes down to how they close out the next 4 games.  If they go 2-2 that'll mean at least 1 Q1 road win and if they go 3-1 (which is totally possible) then we're talking about a bevy of Q1 wins (they'd likely have a 5-10 record against Q1 opponents) in a year where a lot of bubble-ish teams don't have much to hang their hats on.  UNC is squarely on the bubble and they're 0-fer the year against Q1 opponents.

I think this podcast did more to explain the difference between earlier iterations of MGoBlog and the current reality. When they were talking about how Dave and Alex watch, think and talk about sports, it was really clear that it was different from what Brian and then Ace did. The younger guys look at from an analysis-first POV like Brian, but they seem to want to stay in that area without embracing their fandom in their writing.

Just thought that was an interesting glimpse into the change in process around here.

Just me, or does Brian have his joie de vivre back? These top 5's lately are silly, fun and  interesting. Mgo has been kinda/sorta rebuilt, and it's humming again. Now let's make the tourney and (dare I say it?...why yes I shall!) shock the world!
