1. Offense vs Nebraska

starts at 1:00

Better in numbers than it felt. Sort of a Washington game but with dinky doo passing. The TE leak stuff was something they saw on film and kept working. McCarthy’s arc read worked when they thought it was Cade, but they need a pop pass or something off of it because it’s too obvious late. Had to use multiple guards—Stueber wrecked. Appreciation for the running backs—greatest hurdle of all time? McNamara deep accuracy, where’d you go?

[The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]

2. Defense vs Nebraska

starts at 23:45

Nebraska is very good at college crappe, not very good at fundamental football. DTs have a very good day again, impressive that Mazi Smith could keep going after the opening screen. Jenkins had the 3rd down stuff. Hinton was great. They’re not pass rushers however, which is still a step-up problem. Michigan had crappe as well, especially when Morris and Hawkins played that 4th and 2.

3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory

starts at 47:15

Not a lot of weird decisions—both teams punted on 4th and 1 in their own territory. Special teams battle wasn’t as big as we expected because of Michigan’s punt returns: one flub, one ran backwards, one let bounce and lucky it went in the endzone. The rest was great: Robbins added distance to his Boom. MAAR blood in Moody.

4. Around the Big Ten, wsg Jamie Mac

starts at 1:14:03

Iowa-Penn State changed when PSU didn’t have a backup quarterback, which is very hard to do in 2021 when your Will Levis can just go start at Kentucky. PSU’s defense is legit: Luketa is doing the Micah Parsons stuff, and their secondary is filled with stars. MSU-Rutgers you can watch the highlights because that’s all there was. Wisconsin’s best RB was booted from the program. Ohio State is shoveling coal again.

I’m just thinking of Joe Tiller now, where he’d have 15 guys in the huddle and run four of them off.

I was thinking something similar to Nebraska is good at the crap stuff and less so at the traditional stuff. Michigan was clearly the better team. Nebraska ran everything they could think of and it still wasn’t enough. Excellent sign of how well coached Michigan is.

The problem with Cade not being able to throw the intermediate stuff is those are the receivers we have left do best.  As bad as he was with the deep ball yesterday that is still better than any qb we have had since Rudock, I can accept that but it feels like his arm is not strong enough to hit the intermediate stuff in time, that is a huge problem. I have accepted Cade is the guy this year but if it was my choice I would make the change to JJ and just go with it.

And for Brian, you are out of touch with the defending Nebraska fans, I know they used to be ok but he must not have checked out their message boards lately. They are just as bad as the rest of us, maybe worse.

I'm going to put in a vote for Haskins' for a couple reasons:

1. Although Bell's was a "pure hurdle" with good hurdle form, the defender definitely went lower so it wasn't as impressive.

2. Bell got a few more steps but went down secondary to not sticking the landing well. I can't recall many (any?) where the runner just kept going although I'm sure there are examples.

I used to think that Michigan fans on the whole were somewhat more balanced and reasoned online than most fanbases, but the group critiquing Cade for what he's not versus what he is has shown me that's simply not true.  He was not his best self throwing the deep passes on Saturday, that's absolutely accurate.  But what folks don't factor in is his main outside target was injured in the first game (Ronnie Bell).  After weeks of development and practice, another wideout (Roman Wilson, who was coming off his best game) wasn't there.  People act like a QB/WR connection doesn't take time and practice to get right (there's timing, knowing how fast a guy is, knowing whether a dude will contest a 50/50 ball, can he high point it, etc.)  Cade's not throwing balls to Nico Collins out there.  He's a risk averse QB in the best way, in that he doesn't put passes where the DB's can generally get to them.

He's not Joe Milton when it comes to strength, no, but he makes great reads and can escape pressure better than most and has nerves of steel which is hard to development in a QB.  People seem to have this weird belief that JJ will instantly be able to do everything Cade can do, but better.  JJ has talent, but talent doesn't mean he's impervious to pressure like Cade, or makes every read correctly (see his near diasterous keeper in the 4th quarter), or drops passes right in the bucket every time (he's thrown like 3 deep balls this season), or can make adjustments to the OL protection or get guys lined up correctly (Cade is always pushing dudes to the right spot all the time), and on and on.

I've about had it with this blog and it's "fans" constantly pining for the backup when the starter is more than capable, and actually quite good.  The deficits in his game (his reads on zone reads) aren't even his fault because it's clearly not a live read.  We know Cade is not fleet of foot, so his keepers must be called much like Shea's were.  Cade is typically lethal on deep passes, keeps the offense together, knows the playbook inside and out (see last year how it opened up when he replaced Joe Milton), plays cool under pressure, rarely turns it over and in fact usually saves errors (see him nearly saving the touchdown run where an OL stepped on him), gets people in the right spots (see him pushing Erick All I believe into the right spot on one or more occassions) and on and on.

Cade is a game manager in all the best ways.  It's like people forgot that Jake Ruddddock helped us to 9 wins (shoulda been 10 if not for THAT PLAY), despite not being the most gifted athlete.  JJ will start when he's ready, Cade probably knows every mistake he mistake and will correct it, and our offense is better for having him in charge of it.

I've been saying this since post game one: Bell injury was a disaster. Michigan doesn't have a game breaking WR OR , more importantly, a reliable WR.

They MAY improve in this department but I'm not sure we get it from CJ or Baldwin. Wilson was coming on but got injured.

Cade is fine, we are lacking a bit in WR

I refrained for listening to this podcast because I've already heard these takes a couple times already this year and it's just tiring.  It's just fucking annoying at this point, some shitty bit the MGoBlog writers can't let go because they're sure the audience will start laughing at any minute.

Anyway, I'm going to enjoy a 6-0 season with two nice road wins and let the people who desperately wish that they were 6-0 in the way they want to their own devices.

I might not have noticed it before, but it seems like Brian shuts down Seth a lot more than vs years past. It's like Seth opens up a take or comment and Brian frequently shuts it down with something like "No, that's not right, let's move on." I know it's Brian's blog and he can do what he wants, but I kind of miss the goofy give and take that I think was there before.

I think it's the opposite. It's better than it used to be. There were some really cringey podcasts a couple years ago, especially when Ace took a hiatus and it was Seth and Brian together for the first few games or season or whenever it was. Brian is often too harsh in my opinion, but also I agree with him sometimes. I'm glad he moved on from the burrito talk. Seth does get a little carried away sometimes. Like Brian said, it was dumb and took away from the on-field stuff but whatever. We don't need to complain for 5 minutes about the announcers showing burritos. I generally get tired of too much complaining about refs or broadcasts. The refs had to be mentioned in this podcast of course though because they were abysmal on both sides.

A great deal of the Cade talk is ridiculous. Does he have deficiencies? Sure. Arm strength could be better. Zone read game could be better -- though I think this is also on the coaches for (a) clearly not being able to teach him to execute it and (b) continuing to trot this package out there when it's counterproductive to our run game as it leads unblocked defenders right to the point of attack. That's a coaching mistake as much as it is on the player.

But, cumong man, Cade just LED the team to what are probably the two best road wins in the Harbaugh era, and back-to-back too. The man has leadership, and the team is putting it all out there for him and each other. Is he enough to beat OSU? I tend to doubt it. But is he enough to get us to 10-2 or perhaps 11-1? I think he might be.

Also, a couple points on JJ -- in that road environment, the coaches did not even call on him to throw a pass.

**EDITED: He did throw one, an incompletion. H/T to MichiganMan**

Maybe they don't fully trust Cade, but it seems like JJ just isn't there yet with the playbook. Athletically, he's much more gifted, but in a JH offense, you need to have the understanding too. Also, if JJ was starting, I'd guess we'd see "issues" on the ZR too.

How is this a rebuttal to Brian and Seth? They've said all these things. They've blamed the coaches. They don't want to bench Cade.

Cade is exactly like his recruiting profile said. Where I disagree with this site is the players comparison of Shea Patterson. I don’t see Shea Patterson in Cade McNamara. Cade is much more composed in crucial situations than Patterson was. I believe Cade will get better with more game action so I’m excited to see it. McCarthy may become a good player but his recruiting profile didn’t suggest an all world talent like Trevor Lawrence or Quinn Ewers and the coaches don’t believe he’s a better option over McNamara. The important takeaway right now is the team is playing well with some room for growth. If they can improve in certain areas it will make for a special season.

I frequented the bars the Meyer's would attend in Dublin. I can attest Shelly is a bad person.

The bar name "2 in 1" made me spit my coffee onto my keyboard.
