MGoBBQ: Hallopeno' Mummy Poppers Comment Count

GoBlueBBQ

[Sponsor note (via Seth): Joe Pichey’s recipes can happen because Lantana Hummus pays for the ingredients and stuff. Here’s a message I got this week from the Lantana CEO:

Although the PSU beat down was just plain awful, I really enjoyed MGoBlog’s build up to the game, including the Very Professional MGoPodcast and Joe’s always delicious BBQ post.

The Yellow Lentil plug on the podcast was great, but I thought the packaging on screen was lacking. So, I went to our designer and had her create a new look for our hot selling Yellow Lentil:

It’s a winner in my book. Unfortunately, my marketing department threatened to quit if Lantana relaunched Yellow Lentil with this new look.  Something about cats ...

Their marketing director is a very nice young lady and I will miss working with her very much.]

Let me start by saying that I learned a very valuable lesson this week. It’s one that I feel I need to pass along so others can benefit from my mistake. If you or anyone you know suffers from this epidemic, just know that it’s curable. I was guilty of PWI. That’s Pinterest While Intoxicated. PWI will lead you down an UGLY path of holiday projects from which there is NO escape. The only way out is to hand over your man card and turn on the grill. Or oven in this case. This one was kinda fun and turned out some tasty poppers. Make these ahead of time and take them to your Halloween party and throw them in the oven. Your friends will dig em.

Ingredients:

  • Crescent Dough (1 can)
  • Jalapeños
  • Cream Cheese
  • Parmesan Cheese (Use your favorite Cheese)
  • Egg
  • BBQ Rub
  • Candy Eyes (Party City)

[After the JUMP: spooooooky good]

Directions:

Start by preheating your grill or oven to 400 degrees, I actually used my oven for this as I sold my Big Green egg and am waiting on my Kamado Joe to be delivered. This indoor grill, or oven as they call it works pretty good.

2

Cut your jalapeños down the middle and remove the seeds and membrane. I like to use a grapefruit spoon for this as it makes things much easier. This is basically removing all of the heat from the pepper.

3

Once the seeds and membranes are removed, we can move along to the cream cheese filling. I went with your basic cream cheese and parmesan filling. If you can find pineapple cream cheese, use that. Or just add some crushed pineapple to the regular cream cheese and you have a tasty, sweet cheesy mixture that will pack a ton of flavor. Add some of your favorite BBQ rub to the mix.

4

Keep the mixture cold and it will be easier to load into the jalapeños. I rolled mine into little balls and set aside.

5

Place the cheese ball into the jalapeño and form into the cavity of the pepper.

6

I like to flatten mine out as much as possible. This is where my OCD kicked in.

7

Once your peppers are packed, you can move onto the dough. I went with crescent roll dough on this one. You can also use puff pasty and it would turn out great. Roll the dough out and try to pinch the seems together.

8

Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the dough into 1/2 inch wide pieces.

9

Separate them and roll em out into the longest pieces of dough that you can. Don’t go too thin or they will break.

10

Now you can start wrapping the jalapeños. Leave enough room up top for a creepy face.

11

Place them on a cookie sheet and start on your egg wash.

12

Beat your eggs and start brushing. This will give the creepy little buggers a nice glossy sheen.

13

Just do the front side. No need to brush the backside of the mummy. He doesn’t care for that much.

14

After about 20 minutes, you have some golden brown poppers. These are tasty as is, but we need to creep them up a bit. For some reason, I had some candy eyes in the pantry. Don’t ask me why, but they were in there. I think I got them at Party City awhile back.

15

These are candy, so they are ok to eat. The sweetness of the eyes actually went well with the spiciness of the jalapeño.

16

Add the eyes to the face area and you are all done. Yes, they do follow you as you walk across the room.

17

Feel free to put them in fun little poses as I did with my lil buddy and my beer.

18

These had great flavor and were fun to eat. Happy Halloween and GO BLUE!!!

the gloves necessary?  Jalapeno's aren't generally that hot.  I guess it covers you if you forget to wash your hands and then accidentally wipe your eye.

Do they have a version with a Carolina Reaper?
