Hello: Reece Atteberry Comment Count

Wrists are twitching. Fingers are shaking. MGoBlog has called in the reserve unit so others can be spared my fate from the Greatest Mid-February Weekend in the History of Mid-February Weekends. My gnarled hands are beyond saving. Hello.

Aurora (CO) Eaglecrest OL Reece Atteberry was the fourth prospect to announce his commitment on Sunday. Matt Dudek is now teasing ten(!) commits, which would match the GMFWITHOMFW haul in the 2013 class that included Jake Butt, Taco Charlton, and Jourdan Lewis.

Michigan got in early on Atteberry, offering him over a year ago, and that helped them fend off a strong challenge from Notre Dame.

He will enroll December 18th, his birthday, per 247's Blair Angulo:

"The early offer from Michigan meant a lot and I've had a close relationship with coach Ed Warinner. He has a great résumé and reputation, and at Michigan everyone is family so it's going to be great to be a part of that. Coach (Jim) Harbaugh is one of those guys that has the same mindset. Whatever he does, he wants to be great at. It was great to get to know him a little bit more. Early signing day is actually on my birthday this year, so I'm excited to be able to celebrate that way and fulfill a dream on my birthday."

While Atteberry is listed at tackle on two of the three sites, his scouting reports and film indicate his future is likely on the interior.

There's a big split between the outlet that published actual scouting and lists Atteberry at his likeliest college position and the two that, well, did not do that. You may have guessed without even looking at the rankings table. Yes, you were correct.

Atteberry is listed anywhere between 6'4", 262 (ESPN) and 6'5", 280 (247). The latter figure appears to be more recent. While not necessarily a prototype at each position, he could fill a spot anywhere along the line—Michigan fans don't need to be reminded that centers occasionally become left tackles out of necessity.

SCOUTING

Much of what we know on Atteberry comes from Notre Dame's 247 outlet, as they believed he was a good bet to end up in the class for a while. Their first scouting report comes from January:

Per reporting by Tom Loy, Todd Lyght had dropped by Eaglecrest High School to check in on Atteberry last May before returning recently. Jeff Quinn and Tom Rees then traveled to Aurora, Colorado to look into the junior prospect late last week before an offer was extended.

Atteberry is a long, lean lineman with light feet and the type of bend coveted on the edge. But his talent isn’t limited at tackle, showing the type of mobility and capability to play inside. In fact, it’s very possible Atteberry plays center in college.

There's your "can play anywhere on the line" bit, plus praise for his bend and mobility, which can be tough to showcase when you're often snapping the ball before firing into a defender or pulling around the line.

The local crew, BuffStampede, ranked Atteberry first among 2020 Colorado prospects in February:

A 6-foot-5, 280-pounder from Eaglecrest, Atteberry has the versatility to play all five positions on the offensive line. Duke, CU, Michigan and Notre Dame are among the colleges Atteberry has visited in recent months and he plans to take his third trip to Ohio State in March.

Hey, there it is again.

The most in-depth report comes from IrishIllustrated's Tim Prister, as that site long expected Atteberry to end up in blue and gold:

Atteberry is a tenacious, ferocious run blocker who thrives on the physicality of interior line play. He is quick off the snap despite the cumbersome responsibility of snapping the football before exploding into an interior defensive lineman. He is so quick out of the snap and moves his feet so well that he can pull and set the edge, which is no small feat for a center.

It is those quick feet that indicate Atteberry could play tackle, but that wouldn’t be the best use of his skillset. Atteberry needs to be in the forest with those other big bodies to maximize his physicality, thirst for contact and pad level.

Prister also noted Atteberry has "the pad level and knee bend of an interior offensive lineman," which he meant as high praise. If you read the above and thought of Mason Cole or Graham Glasgow, you're not alone. While Atteberry could capably play anywhere on the line, his upside is highest on the interior.

OFFERS

Atteberry boasts a strong offer sheet for a (for now) three-star from Colorado. Notre Dame obviously pushed hard; Iowa, Miami (YTM), Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Penn State, and USC stand out among his other offers. Not all of those offers were still committable by the time Atteberry made his decision—OSU called off a recent visit after flipping Warren De La Salle OT Grant Toutant, ranked within spitting distance of Atteberry, from Penn State.

HIGH SCHOOL

Even on lukewarm Rivals, Atteberry is the highest-rated prospect to hail from Eaglecrest and just the third to sign with a Power Five school, joining two of his fellow linemen from the 2019 class (Barrett Miller, Stanford; Jake Wiley, Colorado).

STATS

While his energy primarily went to offense, Atteberry tallied 28 tackles, 2 TFL, and 6 QB hurries as a rotation defensive tackle.

FAKE 40 TIME

ESPN reports what appears to be a laser-timed 5.84. That gets zero FAKEs. It also shouldn't be a concern given the mobility he shows on tape. More notably, he only managed a 31-foot powerball throw, near the bottom among 2020 linemen. Adding strength will be a priority.

Atteberry's mobility at the center position is on full display in his junior highlights:

PREDICTION BASED ON FLIMSY EVIDENCE

Assuming Atteberry ends up at center, which seems like a good bet, he'll have a path to relatively early playing time. Centers Cesar Ruiz (if he doesn't leave early for the NFL) and Stephen Spanellis will be in their final year of eligibility when Atteberry arrives, leaving 2019 three-star Zach Carpenter as his primary competition to start in 2021 unless a guard (like Nolan Rumler) shifts down a spot. Given Atteberry already has plenty of experience at center, which is rare for a Division I prospect (most play OT), he could have the inside track for that spot despite his relative youth.

UPSHOT FOR THE REST OF THE CLASS

Atteberry is the third offensive lineman in the class, joining OTs Zak Zinter and Micah Mazzccua. Even with a number of commits still waiting to go public, Michigan's 2020 class has shot up to #9 in the country and #2 in the Big Ten. Someone will presumably go deeper into class size and positional need once the dust settles from this commitapalooza.

Excellent assessment...really it is! From the center position his coming off the snap is elite and his decision making and getting to the second level is also elite. I believe he is a significantly under-rated prospect.

Some of your finest writing yet, Brian - well done!

Seriously, though - great to see you're doing well - here's to better health and more MGoCameos until such time that you get hired for the Dept of HHS by President Grant Newsome.
