Ohio State 6, #6 Michigan 5 (OT)

1st period

Joshua goal, Ohio State

OSU 1 UM 0 PPG 10:15 Assists: Brevig

Joshua gets the puck on the wing and cuts to the middle. There’s a 2-on-1 opportunity and he tries to force the pass through the defender, but it bounces off of him…and right back to Joshua.

osu sun 1-1

Joshua fires a perfect shot just under the bar. Racine read pass and started to push across, but he course-corrects and drops to the ice when he sees a shot coming. He pulls his blocker up but doesn’t get a piece of the puck.

osu sun 1-2

Kearney goal, Ohio State

OSU 2 UM 0 EV 15:45 Assists: Dalrymple & Parran

Kearney cuts to the slot with Cecconi draped all over him. He skates through the outstretched stick…

osu sun 2-1

and is able to pull the puck under while flipping his stick over. Racine hit the ice too early and is now forced to try and poke check the puck away.

osu sun 2-2

Kearney can’t get back to the puck until he’s at a very sharp angle, and even then he’s only able to throw the puck horizontally across the crease thanks to Racine’s outstretched leg and Cecconi’s stick. The puck hits Racine’s skate and goes in because that’s just the kind of weekend it was.

Schilkey goal, Ohio State

OSU 3 UM 0 EV 17:06 Assists: Weis & Gerard

This game wasn’t on TV so unfortunately I don’t have proper context for this goal, though I’m guessing this is the one where Boka was caught flat-footed. He chops Schilkey’s hands in the hope that the puck will roll away, but Schilkey maintains control.

osu sun 3-1

Schilkey sacrifices a little shot speed for deception, allowing the puck to trail his body for a moment. He pulls it up and his shot beats Racine by a hair.

osu sun 3-2

2nd period

WERENSKI GOAL, MICHIGAN

OSU 3 UM 1 PPG 05:59 Assists: Compher & Kile

Michigan’s on the power play, and some activity in the corner takes this from a 5-on-4 to a 4-on-3. Werenski gets a loose puck and fires a snap shot immediately, as he’s got a defender in front of him about to sweep the puck away.

osu sun 4-1

Tomkins lifts his glove and opens up the six-hole (under his arm) and that’s exactly where the puck beats him. Motte is doing an excellent job screening, and Tomkins having to look around him is very likely what led to his misread of the puck.

osu sun 4-2

Jobst goal, Ohio State

OSU 4 UM 1 EV 10:14 Assists: Joshua & Greco

Greco carries around the back of the net and it looks like he’s going to try a wraparound; he sees Joshua on the other side of the slot and passes through the defense.

osu sun 5-1

Joshua tries to catch Racine while he’s in motion, firing a backhand shot immediately. De Jong smothers it and the puck falls to the ice.

osu sun 5-2

Nieves doesn’t notice Jobst standing behind him unchecked, and Downing was supposed to cover Joshua but that turned into De Jong’s assignment when he blocked Joshua’s shot, and that shot block led to him being on the ice and unable to take Jobst. The puck’s just sitting there and he’s unchecked, so Jobst gets a free chance right in front of the net. Racine’s glove is dropped in this frame, and though he does try to snag the shot it beats him under the cross bar.

osu sun 5-3

Dalrymple goal, Ohio State

OSU 5 UM 1 EV 13:11 Assists: Schilkey

De Jong gets leveled near the corner, which draws the attention of Downing; both of Michigan’s defensemen are now in the corner. Schilkey has the puck along the boards and is falling down. Dancs pressures him and he just sort of throws the puck as he’s falling. It’s a perfect pass to Dalrymple at the blue line.

osu sun 6-1

Dalrymple steps into his shot with the benefit of Racine being heavily screened. Nieves clears the crease just before the shot arrives, but Racine still gets beat glove-side.

osu sun 6-2

MARTIN GOAL, MICHIGAN

OSU 5 UM 2 EV 19:15 Assists: Nieves & Connor

Connor steals the puck, sees a defender in front of him, slips the puck through his legs, and retrieves it on the other side.

osu sun 7-1

This puck wizardry sets a pick of sorts, causing the defender in front and the one chasing to hit each other.

osu sun 7-2

Connor has a nice backhand-shot opportunity but he passes it up, instead dropping the puck for Nieves. Nieves shoots and Tomkins stops it, but he’s unable to smother the puck because he kicks it away.

osu sun 7-3

The puck bounces off of his leg pad and into the crease, and all Tomkins can do is stretch out his glove. Martin charges the net and buries the loose puck.

osu sun 7-4

CALDERONE GOAL, MICHIGAN

OSU 5 UM 3 PPG 19:39 Assists: Marody & Nieves

Nieves carries in along the boards and threads a cross-ice pass through traffic to Marody.

osu sun 8-1

Marody fakes a slap shot, which draws one defender up and locks him in place as he attempts to block the shot he thinks is coming. It also freezes Tomkins, who’s prepared for the puck to be on him quickly and has squared up with Marody. On the downswing, Marody slows a bit and turns his blade, putting a pass in front of Calderone in the slot.

osu sun 8-2

Calderone reaches for it and flips a backhand shot into the wide open net; Tomkins sees this developing around the time it’s over.

osu sun 8-3

3rd period

WERENSKI GOAL, MICHIGAN

OSU 5 UM 4 PPG 10:22 Assists: Connor & Motte

Motte passes from behind the net to Connor along the boards, and he passes to Werenski at the point. It’s a fairly innocuous start, but that’s how puck movement on the power play goes.

osu sun 9-1

Two Michigan skaters go to the front of the net when they see Werenski shooting, which also drags two defenders closer. This clogs the front of the net nicely; Tomkins has no idea this shot is released.

osu sun 9-2

Michigan players are celebrating and Tomkins is peering to his right, trying to find the puck. So yeah, he was screened pretty heavily.

osu sun 9-3

MARODY GOAL, MICHIGAN

OSU 5 UM 5 EV 15:07 Assists: Selman & Kile

Selman cuts to the middle of the ice and shoots at the edge of the faceoff circle, but the shot hits the defender’s skate. It takes an advantageous bounce for Michigan, however, as it rolls to Tomkins’ right and to the area furthest from the OSU defenders.

osu sun 10-1

Marody, who’s obviously not even in the frame above, comes out of nowhere to pick up the loose puck and immediately shoot. Tomkins tries to push across and manages to pull his arms and legs in, but the shot beats him over the shoulder.

osu sun 10-2

Overtime

Schilkey goal, Ohio State

OSU 6 UM 5 EV 02:54 Assists: Brevig

Welp, this doesn’t look very good. Schilkey skates in with two defenders trailing and not in position to make a play, so might as well consider this a breakaway. He shoots and Racine stops it, but a rebound pops out in front of the net.

osu sun 11-1

Luckily for Racine, Motte is able to tie up Brevig at just the right time to prevent the shot while also not drawing a penalty. The puck stays where it is, begging to be cleared.

osu sun 11-2

Racine decides it’s heroball time and goes to clear the damn thing himself. He doesn’t see Schilkey, who has skated from his right, behind the net, and has now emerged sans defenders. (Boka and Werenski tripped on each other and slammed into the boards.)

osu sun 11-3

Schilkey takes a couple of strides and settles the puck before backhanding it in, somehow threading it through three Michigan defenders.

osu sun 11-4

OSU has been and probably always will be a 2nd rate program. To get absolutely bombed by them this year in all four games is somewhat infuriating. No one on this coaching staff knows what defense is.

Racine has clearly been the better goalie this season, but he's been awful the last 3 games.  And that OT goal was atrocious.  I think I'd go with Nagelvoort on Friday.

Was at this game and the goal they overturned that Michigan scored to go up 6-5 in regulation was a bit ridiculous.  The ref skated over to the Michigan bench to explain and seriously threw his hands up because he didnt know why they overturned it.  Was all downhill after that.
