Ambassador Long Already At Work

Jim Harbaugh called David Long a potential ambassador for the program, and that appears to be coming to fruition already. Five-star CA CB Darnay Holmes hasn't been mentioned much around here, but that's about to change, per 247's Steve Lorenz:

“Michigan is for sure moving up in things," Holmes told Huskers Illustrated analyst Mike Schaefer over the weekend. “Coach Jim Harbaugh is building a monster up there. My best friend David Long is going up there in June. Dylan Crawford is up there. A lot of California guys go up there. That shows Ann Arbor isn’t a bad place to go."

There are a few promising things to note here. Holmes plans to take an official visit to Ann Arbor in the fall. Long is quoted in the article saying Holmes is "like a blood brother," and he's been talking to both Holmes and his father about Michigan. Perhaps most tellingly, Holmes talked up Michigan to a Nebraska reporter.

Lorenz added a report today that provides a new layer of intrigue. Yesterday, Jim Harbaugh contacted Desean Holmes, Darnay's cousin and a 2015 four-star receiver who didn't enroll at San Diego State for personal reasons. Desean could visit soon, and if he winds up at Michigan, Lorenz "strongly believe[s]" that would move Michigan up Darnay's list. Desean could fill a major 2017 need with Chesson and Darboh outgoing and help deliver a five-star corner. Sounds good to me.

2017 Updates: Wilson Sets Officials

Five-star NY OT Isaiah Wilson announced the five schools he'll take official visits to on his Twitter account yesterday: Georgia, Alabama, LSU, and USC join Michigan on the list.

The Wolverine's Brandon Justice, who's moving on up after an excellent run at Maize n Brew, caught up with four-star CA WDE Deonte "DJ" Johnson, who said Michigan is near the top of his very impressive list of offers:

Johnson is a 6-5, 240-pounder that has the Wolverines high on his radar.

"The level of play and family they have," Johnson said, regarding what stands out about the Maize and Blue to him. "They're near the top of my top-10 schools."

While Johnson doesn't have a campus visit set up yet, he'll be at the Sacramento satellite camp.

Allen Trieu's latest feature in the Detroit News is on the prospect who could very well be Michigan's next commit, four-star WDE Luiji Vilain. He gets a glowing evaluation in his writeup:

“First of all, he’s all of 6-foot-4, 240 pounds,” Scout analyst Michael Clark says. “He’s one of the more physically impressive guys you’ll see at the high school level. He’s chiseled, super athletic, moves well, gets after the passer and can also play sideline to sideline. He’s the complete package at defensive end and might even be able to play outside linebacker in some schemes, but he’ll play at 260-270 and the sky’s really the limit.”

Of note: Scout ranks Vilain about a hundred spots lower than any of the other recruiting sites. Vilain would be a heck of a pickup. Also of note: both Trieu and Sam Webb have issued gut feelings (or, in Trieu's case, his equivalent) that Vilain won't be the only early June commit for Michigan. This should be an eventful month.

Three-star Cass Tech CB Donovan Johnson told MLive he's still hoping for offers from Michigan and Michigan State. Michigan has enough corners on the board that a Wolverine offer would probably arrive late if one arrives at all; even though Johnson is a little undersized for their style, I'm surprised MSU hasn't extended one yet.

Yes, We're All Old

Michigan has offered 2017 three-star FL DE Robert Porcher IV, son of the Detroit Lions great. I guess this shouldn't alarm me as much as it did given Barry Sanders' son was in the class of 2012, but... yeah.

TMI's Brice Marich reports a couple of offers went out to big-time 2018 prospects. Top-50 SC SDE Stephon Wynn, a Clemson legacy, said he is "very" interested after receiving his Michigan offer, but also wasn't sure if he'd visit campus. Four-star CA WR Marquis Spiker landed an offer from Jedd Fisch; he has family in Michigan and seems like a better bet to at least take a visit down the road.

Seems like a short update, and there's nothing but a block quote under "Yes We're All Old."  I know I'm old, but which legacy is it today?

I'm not sure about this, but I know DeSean Holmes somewhat. He played football at Bishop Alemany which is very close to my house, and the HS officiating association I worked with did all of our preseason practicing with the Alemany football team, where DeSean went. At the time, he was a USC commit so naturally I paid a lot of attention to him. He's small, but is an amazing athlete. He'd be in the Martavious Odoms mold in college. The thing that stood out to me most though, is that he (also like Odoms) was the most polite kid on the field. He was showboaty and he referred to all his coaches and officials as "sir." He thanked me multiple times for being an official at his practice, stuff like that. It will be interesting to find out why he didn't stay at SDSU, and I don't know how great of a recruit he really is, but my experiences with him were very positive.

Interesting. Teh interwebz say that he failed to show up to camp at SDSU for what would have been his freshman year. Later he showed up, but after four days of classes, he disappeared again. A grad assistant went to check DeSean's dorm room and found it cleared out.

Maybe all he needs is family like Darnay or someone to help him stay? Would certainly be nice.

Interesting note on Desean Holmes. I looked up his recruiting profile on 247 and for the 17th ranked WR, his offer list seemed surprisingly small (some big names - Oklahoma, Cal, Nebraska, USC, UCLA), but a lot of normally lower ranked schools. He seemed to have academic problems before enrolling in SDSU. Hopefully, he's taken this past year to figure his life out. It would be awesome to get another solid receiver to build on. At 5'10, 175 he seems likely to be a slot type.

He's the CA 4*DE our staff is reportedly very high on. For those who don't understand what's to be gained from satellite camps, this may help.

"Coaching style and a relationship with the coaches is probably the biggest thing for me," he said. "Instead of having to travel across the country to find that out about Michigan, I will get a chance to do it at the camp instead. That's a big thing for me. I am excited to see them in action."

Yeah, he's been the biggest surprise of all of Harbaugh's coaching hires, and in a good way.

The circumstances of his hire to Michigan made it seem like Harbaugh was just helping out a buddy because it didn't really cost anything.  I expected him to work in the shadows for a year and then quietly move on.

Boy was I wrong.  Like you said, it's going to sting when he leaves.

I heard he wants to take visits to USC & Oklahoma.  That makes me nervous for a guy from the Southwest.  He haven't been able to land an explosive RB for a while and I thought he might finally be that guy.

I think we're still kind of thin at WR in 2017.Obviously that depends on whether some position switches that have been speculated happen. The only WR on the roster I'd pigeonhole as a slot is Nate Johnson. Holmes would be too. I could see Perry, McDoom, Crawford all playing inside or outside depending on how things shake out.

Yeah, some of those guys can plan on the outside, but for all of the guys you mentioned, their best fit is in the slot, both as receivers and as blockers.  We use our outside receivers a lot as blockers and guys like Crawford and Perry aren't going to do what Darboh and Chesson do now.

Mr Miggle

That's a major reason most don't play much. Perry looked like a pretty decent blocker by the end of the year. I won't be surprised if he moves outside in 2017. It's not all about size. Gallon had a tremendous year on the outside. I'd rate him way above Funchess as a blocker. Roundtree turned into a good outside WR too, despite his size.

Chesson and Darboh last season were the best blocking tandem of WRs I can remember here. Of course they were 4th year players. I don't think we can expect their replacements to start out at near that level, whoever they are.

Does not matter who coached us, the circumstances, etc. Whenever UM is clicking - and at times when it's not - There will be mention on every telecast about the blocking of the receivers. All of RR's receivers were blockers, despite our poor record. Same is true of Carr and everyone else. Roundtree, as you say and Gallon certainly didn't have physical advantage, blocked and blocked well. I think this is what kept Funchess from evolving to the level he was capable of while here.

He appeared to get excited for one aspect of the game only, receiving the ball. No doubting his talent, but didn't seem to buy into the blocking aspect of receiving. Cost himself some money heading into the next level. I cannot argue about Chesson and Darboh, although we've had some nice blocking tandems before. The fact that I cannot recall a set that matches these two, in and of itself, probably makes your claim true. And to watch their blocks in replay showed if equaled here, it was seldom and a long time ago.

Your remarks, re Perry seem spot on as well. Harbaugh saw something he liked in the young man and gave him PT. I don't think he was seldom used thereafter had anything to do with poor performance on his part. I think Jim wanted to get him on the field to make him aware of his role in that offense and limited PT thereafter was by design in order that he concentrate on that which would be asked of him. Think this was true of a few other positions as well. His performance in the bowl probably is the best testament to this theory.

As an aside, I love to see it emphasized early and often. All the "wanna-bes" on the sideline need to just watch the effort by these two, neither of whom were household names at the start of season; hell, the fanbased didn't know one of them existed. And yes, good blocking does lead to rewards under Harbaugh. One was at the elite level by end of year and the other contrtibuting in an All BIG fashion.

and had my internet successfully reactivated yesterday, so I imagine a few of my post will appear dated so I apologize in advance. Don't know why hitting a switch takes so long, but they said, "updating services, sir," but given the three day delar, I would think they overhauled their entire business.

This post is in regard to Holmes, but I am not certain, given the Jump option then the comment section if something did go wrong with initial post. Regardless, my first look at Holmes, and would say he deserves all of his stars. The fluidity he shows in backpedaling and throughout any adjustment is nice to watch. The young man has been coached well; couple that with some freakish ability, and Holmes is what you get. He appears to play extremetly intelligent ball as well, using the sideline marker as an extra defender, just as you would in bb. Don't see too many do it that well. Reminiscent of one J.L., alrealy playing at AA level for us.

He loves to hit as well, as in the Woodson mode. He is a sure tackler, another element of the game that has gone overlooked by too many for far too long. Don't know if there was a breakdown as to his measureables, i.e., forty, vertical, etc., but all appear to be fine on tape.

Would be a very nice "Get" if we could snag him out of there. Love the phrase, "building a monster up there."  So true, something we know, but nice to see that bit of knowledge is being spread around the nation.

Wallace: My total earnings for first month was very low... Just little over $250, but it was then when I realized this is the real deal and not yet another scam you see all over the internet! There are no words to describe the feeling you get when your first paycheck arrives and what excitement I felt at that moment realizing that making money from home is in fact very possible. After my first month I dedicated more time and put more effort in working this and my second month was already much more better (2nd paycheck I got was for $990)... Now, 6 months later, I am earning just over $2500 a month . I am a little slow with my work and I am not that good with computers and that's why I think a younger person could be able to earn much much more than this...
