Exit John Beilein. Seriously. Comment Count

Brian May 13th, 2019 at 9:02 AM

I don't even know what to say man. I have stared at this tweet for five solid minutes trying to figure out how someone hacked Woj's account:

Woj then followed that up with a confirming tweet, but we are all asleep and will wake up in 10 minutes and be like "whoah what a weird dream"

Brendan Quinn has confirmed it as well. John Beilein has left a program he turned into a national power to work for Dan Gilbert on one of the worst teams in the NBA. "Stunned" doesn't quite cover it. I just keep typing the start of sentences and deleting them. Reality is no more I am a salad potato

I just can't agree here. Beilein has exceeded any reasonable expectation we could have for him. He has built a program that was a complete non-entity into one that is not just competitive but nationally elite. He has done it with integrity and class. If we cannot grant him the chance to take a stab at the pinnacle of his sport with a modicum of the class he has shown while here...

Well, then, we don't deserve coaches that are that good.

I somewhat have this feeling, but its a dim feeling.  More wishing him the best, he did amazing things here and wont forget it.

I really want to know how much of the cheating bullshit got to him, especially with the very visible news out right now.  Wire tap confirmations and nothing being done, if thats one cause of this i dont blame him at all.  Cheaters game right now and with transfers where it is, its going to get even more unbalanced.

BUT the fuckin Cavs?!?! Dude what a train wreck, he is going to need to be VERY OK with being dog shit for probably the whole time there. Even though i see him done soon (retiring)...watch the heat that comes to him from cavs fans...ooo wee.

Big sigh...... hail

Although I am as surprised as anyone, I don't agree with this sentiment. JB leaves behind a clean program in very good shape at a big-time university with solid fan support. Michigan should be able to lure an excellent replacement. But, this will be Warde Manuel's first big test. It will be up to him to make the right moves.

Yeah, our basketball program is going to be fine.  Beilein turned this program into a power and there is no reason to suspect that his successor will not have continued success.  I have to be honest, I think our fan-base is being a little soft right now.  He was a fantastic coach but we are an established high level program with a lot of talent, great facilities, recent history to build upon.  This is unexpected, and it will take some getting used to, but I expect us to still compete for championships and think that our program will keep humming.

I knew the Pistons things wasn't just a local interview.  I hate it.  The NBA has developed to the point where Beilein can actually be very successful I think.  Good for him.  Must've gotten tired losing recruits to moneybags, but oh well.  Promote Yaklich and hopefully they've all learned from Beilein.

I saw a ramdom twitter rumor that JB was in fact frustrated with how CBB recruiting was going and it was part of his decision to leave. Who knows what he really thinks but if that's true we are losing it on both ends (missing out on 5 star players; now losing coach) because the rules are bad and unenforceable.

This is right from Woj's article today:

In recent years, he has become increasingly frustrated with the nature of college basketball recruiting and the retention of top players.

I get it. Everyone in college basketball is cheating and the guys he does bring in that he develops into NBA talent all leaves early anyway. Gotta be super frustrating for him

yes, " tired losing recruits to moneybags"

my guess, wants to compete on an even playing field

recent events, the LSU & AZ coaches not being fired, et al., can only confirm that it will get worse before it gets better in the NCAA.

plus, not having to recruit and run around the country, and Germany, to get players, has to be a drain.

I totally agree with this....   and aside, I could see him having a Max Cherry moment in the film Jackie Brown, where he is sitting in the recruits house in the middle of nowhere, and know hes gonna lose him to a moneybag, and reflects...

Yaklich should be the hire.  Dude can elite recruit, and the dude can elite coach defense, too.

"recent events, the LSU & AZ coaches not being fired, et al., can only confirm that it will get worse before it gets better in the NCAA."

Yes, and yet I'd still rather have a clean coach with perhaps a lower ceiling than a Pitino type greaseball.  Hopefully we don't have to choose between wins and integrity, but that's why Beilein was so rare.

I thought the same thing when I first saw the news--Beilein is tired of the corruption and cheating in college basketball.  I think it was after the Big Ten Championship (maybe before) when he said it was nice to compete for a championship with another clean program (MSU--which... I would rather have my school pay players under the table than allow rapes).

Seeing the LSU and Arizona coaches exposed on FBI wiretap and still coaching at their schools, losing recruits to schools you know are cheating.  I can understand wanting to coach in a situation where everything was fair/above board.

I love John Beilein. Great coach, excellent person. This is the stupidest fucking decision for everyone involved. You're hiring a 66 year old man who has recently undergone heart surgery, giving him a roster of garbage, and telling him to go build a franchise while the Rockets, Warriors, and Bucks exist. And from Beilein's perspective, you're tarnishing your legacy to go fail in the NBA. Unbelievable.

I thought Beilein was a Michigan lifer and don't really understand why the NBA would be attractive to him at this point in his career, but "better NBA opportunities" is relative.  Some coaches -- and I think Beilein is one of these -- value the teaching and building up part of coaching and prefer that over the maintaining-what-already-works part of coaching.

Come to think of it, this may be a partial answer to why he's leaving as well.

On top of it, if you look at his offense (simplistically), there's a lot of spacing, ball movement, high pick and rolls, resulting in guys jacking up open threes.

That's what I've been seeing in the NBA playoffs for the past few weeks. His offense will translate well.

I can't wish the guy anything but the best.  He's done too much for the program.  The distress is solely from knowing that we are not likely to get a replacement who is nearly as good.

I had that thought too. If he wants to get closer to home (if he still calls WNY home), then this is the closest american NBA team. Only about 3 hours from Buffalo. OTOH, Ann Arbor is only like 5 from Buffalo if you drive thru Ontario so it's not like he was coaching in New Mexico either

Just... no.

I don't think any of us would have been that shocked if JB would have retired.  Now he gets to try the NBA for a season before doing it.  Oh yeah... 5 year contract.  That means a lot.  It's not like Danny Gilbert ever fired a coach after one season before, right?

Thanks for a few years of good basketball JB.  Now I will continue to hope the Cavs continue to suck.
