2022 MGoPhotos of the Game (Week 2): Hawaii
Of all the night games played in Michigan Stadium, that was definitely one of them. I hope you are all feeling fresh and well rested after the delayed night game experience.
Because I am not.
Night game atmospheres are fun until you hear Carl Grapentine say "good morning" and realize you mis-interpreted the phrase "Jim Harbaugh's players play on Sundays." I got to Detroit metro at 2 a.m. this morning to catch my 8 a.m. flight. It delayed four hours because our original plane that was supposed to arrive had fumes in the fuselage that sent the crew to the hospital. At some point I dozed off on the floor and woke up with my arm completely numb because Detroit Metro is among the least user-friendly airports to urban camp in. This is the only sleep I got. I finished editing photos. Eventually several hours later Watson the Key Deer flew me home safely despite bouncing on landing. Thanks, Watson. Did you know if you go long enough without sleep you start to hallucinate? It's like free drugs (day job HR if you are reading this that is "A Joke", I am not doing drugs). Care to join me in a belt of scotch?
To get through it I drank copious amounts of coffee out of a coconut because "we're playing Hawaii" and no amount of caffeine would truly get me through yesterday and today. Yes, it was just coffee.
And then they delayed the game because of weather.
ANYWAYS. Yay! Night games! Weather delayed night games! (Disclaimer, I mostly joke, I did have fun and will do it again. I am just... tired, man).
The next night game will likely be against either Penn State or Michigan State and I have no doubt the atmosphere will be truly electric, but in the meantime we celebrated a night game against the worst team in D-I FBS. Surely there would be no drama...
...
BUT BOY OH BOY WAS THERE DRAMA.

If you'd like to support us, one of the simplest things you can do is follow us on social media (links just below) where we post way more photos than here. In the offseason I also do a LOT of wildlife/national park photography. While we're not allowed to sell any of our sports photos per our credential agreement (sorry to anyone who reached out asking about one), I sell prints from my adventures which I sell on FineArtAmerica. Fulfilling a Promise
Last week I apologized for not having a photo of Brad Robbins' Mustache. I'm here to make amends. Please accept this apology. I'll try to get him curling it in the future (cannot guarantee a monocle being worn as well). Behold:
I heard you guys wanted photos of JJ's first start. Well JJ started, and JJ cooked.
Ok, let's talk about it.
Cade has had a rough couple of weeks. It is clear that JJ is the starter moving forward. Still, I cannot help but just feel terrible for Cade. He's done nothing but give his all for Michigan football and as always wanted to be The Guy. He helped lead Michigan to a win over Ohio State, a Big Ten Championship, and the College Football Playoff. We should celebrate all of these things. I have nothing but the utmost respect for this lad and hope that he will continue to help play a key role in this team. We can acknowledge all of this and also deduce that JJ looks like the starter from here on out.
I guess what I'm also saying is... BE NICE.
(Side note, there are some, ermm, obscene gestures in the student section above but I think they're being directed at the officials. Still. BE NICE.)
There was some mild booing and "We Want JJ" chants, which, I do not think help the team effort as much as you'd like to think it does.
The copious amounts of "We Want Orji" chants, well, I understand.
Speaking of nice:

Wonderful. Thanks for your photos and for sacrificing your sleep for us.
P.S. You're right: be nice

And if being "nice" is just too high of a bar for you to reach, then aim a little lower: don't throw verbal shit at a team captain who was a big part of Michigan's best season in 20 years.
In short, don't be an asshole.

Exactly right. Also, at some point(s) this season, Cade will play. He needs to feel the love, not the vitriol.

That’s some good work. Thank you.
That pic of Wilson taking a bow with the ball standing on end is outstanding.

That picture of Roman Wilson in the endzone taking a bow ... the football is standing up on its point. I've seen the video of that moment, and it was just bobbling around, so you caught this photo at the exact most perfect moment. It's awesome.
Technical question: what adjustment(s) do you make with your camera when under the lights at night?
September 11th, 2022 at 8:59 PM ^
Under ideal noon game lighting conditions I can typically get away with (and just kinda estimating here since it can change with even just a cloud but) around f/7.1 or f/8.0, 1/1600 to 1/2000 shutter speed, ISO 800 or ISO 1000. I'll shoot in AV mode so I just set the aperture and the shutter speed adjusts itself (just gotta keep an eye on it so that when I move into shadows it's not going down to like... 1/500 or something).
Night game settings for this one were manual mode at 1/1000, ISO 5000, f/5.6 (I don't have a really good f/2.8 lens besides a 70-200 but I prefer more zoom than that personally). I use an R5 and shoot RAW+JPEG, edit the JPEGs immediately after the game since they're easier to work with (and the R5 JPEGs remove almost all of the noise, even at ISO 5000). If there's a shot that's worth hanging on my wall I know I have the RAW and can make nicer edits to it later if I need to.
Maize outs also mess with the white balance a decent bit (and my laptop screen isn't the best callobrated one) so some of my night game shots end up being wamer than usual. Doesn't bother many people but sometimes bothers me when I look back, ha.

I really appreciate you sharing this information! Thanks!!

Wow, ISO numbers, shutter speeds, manual mode, aperture f/settings, etc: I just took a ride on the photography "Way-back Machine" to the 1970's-80's!

The football in this photo reminded me of the shoe in “Nope”.
