2020 QB JD Johnson Commits To Michigan

Johnson was offered a couple weeks ago, visited last weekend, and now pulls the trigger. There's very little on him out there because he spent most of the year as 2019 five-star QB Spencer Rattler's backup. Rattler got suspended for the year before Phoenix Pinnacle's penultimate regular-season game and Johnson stepped in.
Johnson got five games in as Pinnacle made it to the state semis, and this was enough for teams to start offering. Arizona, South Carolina, and some G5 schools had stepped in before Michigan did. So I wouldn't put too much on his ranking. Hello post, for what it's worth, forthcoming.

Can the ugly shamrock be photoshopped out?
Congrats to him though.

Hopefully he has the feet to run the zone read. MOAR COMMUNIST FOOTBALL

Sounds like a scholarship based mostly on potential, let's hope he shows it on the field as a senior starter.

I mean it's hard to show off what you've got when you're Spencer Rattler's backup. He played well in his time though. I'd expect during camps and his senior year for his ranking to move up

Not worried. Harbaugh has made it clear that he expects improvement during senior seasons for middling star recruits. If not they get processed.
Would be curious to see if Butterfield is interested in Michigan if Stanford passes since they already got Davis Mills and Tanner McKee

I'm actually very excited for this kid. His tape is impressive. He's tall, mobile, has a strong arm, effortless and accurate release, and has pretty good pocket awareness. His ranking doesn't tell the whole story, as a bunch of other people have been saying, and I think when all is said and done he'll be a solid 4* guy

Do we have too many QBs? I'm not a coach or smart. Serious question

I think the coaches want to take a QB in every class, which I think is wise. Plus we don't know if Shea is going to come back or go pro yet, AND if everyone else on the roster is coming back for sure. Besides, Johnson is a 2020 prospect. So, there's lots of time to see what happens between now and when he'd actually come in here.

We're probably a lot better off than the days when Russell Bellomy was taking over in the Nebraska game.

This is a 2020 commit. The only scholarship QB's on the roster (presumably) would be McCaffrey, Milton, and McNamara. That is not too much.

Wrong spot

Well, we saw what happened when Dylan came in for Shea and got hurt. We were playing Brandon Peters. Joe Milton was fun to watch but he is not even close to being ready to play an entire game.
So, I do not think we have too many.

Welcome aboard Mr. Johnson. Hopefully, we'll see some good things from JD this next season. It looks like a situation where the coaches saw his potential and wisely got in early.

He looks so mean.

Yay! Got our QB for 2020!
Must be in a good system (with Spencer Rattler.)
He kind of snarls like Jay Cutler. Might be a good thing.

I won’t put too much on his ranking since I don’t know what it is.

YES! Welcome to the family JD, and GO BLUE!

Currently listed at 6' 4" & 190 per 247. I like the size, and it's early, might even grow, will certainly add weight, so strictly from the physique side he's there. Playing behind a 5* he gets(got) to see first hand what it takes to be at that level. Which is more important than some realize.
Since this was an offer and a take this early, it tells me the staff has a lot of confidence, and that's good enough for me. Good to have that key piece in place early. If he can start to light it up and move up the boards, it may also have a positive impact on the wider recruiting since he'll be the known quantity for the class. Can't understate how that can influence the others.

Seems to have a good arm but wow, he likes to throw it up for grabs like nobody’s business. Maybe the shamrock on his hat is to pay homage to Deshone Kizer (Similar in arm strength and throwing it up for grabs).
