We may be going after Saints' DB Coach
Per Tom Dienhart's (national writer for rivals) Tweet:
New Orleans Saints assistant DB coach Tony Oden may be a candidate for the Michigan DB job, I am told.

would be exellent. The more rings our coaching staff has the better.

as long as these nfl guys can recruit....
though if he's like greg mattison, i don't know what anyone has to be worried about.

Big fan of young NFL colleges in situations like this

Does he have any previous association to Michigan? If not, NO! A Michigan Man with coach the Michigan Secondary!

I'll take two, please.
January 29th, 2011 at 10:15 AM ^
literally, apparently.
January 29th, 2011 at 10:15 AM ^
This is great and all, but this would be a parallel move for him. Not sure it makes sense unless he likes the college game better. Can he recruit?
January 29th, 2011 at 10:18 AM ^
It wouldn't be a lateral move. He's the assistant (to the) DB coach in New Orleans. He'd be the DB coach here.

Whammmmmmy
January 29th, 2011 at 10:20 AM ^
he is an assistant secondary coach there, and here he would be the head of the secondary.
So its a minor upgrade, but still a tough one to make coming from a team like the Saints.

Very good point. It seems likely now that there might be a season or a shortened season next year.

The two jobs never intersect.

Can he recruit?
January 29th, 2011 at 1:25 PM ^
Can he coach, which I think is obvious. Mattison and the words "Ed Reed" will work their magic.
January 29th, 2011 at 10:24 AM ^
From Ohio and young (in his mid-30's), so there are two more positives. If he wants to come, sign him up.
January 29th, 2011 at 10:24 AM ^
He coached at Eastern for a year (2003), so he knows what it's like to live in the area.
He's also originally from Cleveland Heights, Ohio. So, maybe he'd be able to help us with some OSU recruiting battles in Ohio.

Coached w/ John Hoke w/ the Houston Texans.
January 29th, 2011 at 10:25 AM ^
I think that Hoke has built a great staff that can seem to recruit really well. What I want to see from a DB coach is someone who is a great coach. Someone who can coach up this secondary and get them playing well. For several years, our secondary has been rough.

All you coach are belong to us... except Jim Harbaugh

How long is Mattison going to be the head DC. I'm guessing 3 to 5 years so if this guy is talented he could learn under mattison and become the next DC.
January 29th, 2011 at 11:00 AM ^
Certainly looks like we could do worse. Tony Oden has college experience (BC, ECU, EMU) and the Saints secondary seems to have done well while he's been there. League leading pick-sixes sounds nice.

"Pick em' up!"

Is Corwin Brown still a possibility? Great recruiter, M ties. I know he was thrown out there by Brian on WTKA the week before last, and Brian mentioned him in one of his posts.
January 29th, 2011 at 12:38 PM ^
He might be a possibility, but his name always gets thrown around. He holds the same job that Oden holds for the Pats.
January 29th, 2011 at 6:09 PM ^
I swear there have been about four different seasons now since his NFL career ended where people thought "OK, this is the year Corwin comes back to Ann Arbor" due to some opening at DBs coach or even DC a few years ago. And yet it never works out that way.
Makes you wonder a little bit about those institutional politics and if he has beef with somebody.
January 29th, 2011 at 11:17 AM ^
first off, I think getting another nfl guy would be great, don't get me wrong. But the Saints went for a lot of picks and did get them, but they also got burned a lot (see recent Seattle game) as an example. Now Brees can offset a lot of defensive risks, so maybe Denard can as well. Also the the defense was injured a lot too, so that may have something to do with it. Anyway, if UM can get this guy, go for it.
January 29th, 2011 at 12:20 PM ^
The New Orleans secondary's poor performance against Seattle had more to do with injuries than anything else. After Malcom Jenkins went down, his backup Darren Sharper and Roman Harper never seemed to be on the same page.

Sorry, but Im born in raised in Louisiana and its still crazy to see how a couple of years can do to changing peoples perception of a franchise.... My family was a season ticket holder for the Saints up until the hurricane and then it was near impossible to get season tickets....
As much as winning the Superbowl has sunk in, but the fact that we are consistently good is foreign to me... I always have the Wolverines as my safety choice year in and year out to succeed to overcome the depression from the Saints. now its a little role reversal, even though its hard to admit... Especially with these bayou bengal fags down here..
Hopefully Hoke does very well... The defense staff is shaping up beyond my wildest dreams, but I'm still worried about the offense. I can't help but think how awesome it would be to have Richrod on offense and Mattison on defense. I know he wouldn't be here unless Brady Hoke was the coach.. But damn!
January 29th, 2011 at 11:44 AM ^
The use of the word fag is likely to get you a one way ticket to Bolivia. Friendly advice...carry on.

I have offended a number of individuals in my life and am not trying to play the role of high and mighty as I am far from it. I do think it is important not to throw racial/ethnic/sexual slurs around on this site especially if one is hoping for credibility. I did not even neg this individual, I merely passed along some advice to someone who might not know the climate. I lived in San Francisco for two years and I can tell you first hand how much this word means to people. Although I am straight and happily married I do not presume that everyone on this site is like me and to do so would be naive and insensitive, not to mention ignorant.
January 29th, 2011 at 2:55 PM ^
On a related note... can he touch kids?
January 29th, 2011 at 11:24 AM ^
I like the new staff overall, but agree with Brian that it needs a few younger guys. Tony Oden might be a great addition.
January 29th, 2011 at 11:28 AM ^
Nice to finally hear somebody's name mentioned for the job. I am not very patient to begin with but man have we taken our sweet ass time filling our last 2 coaching positions.
January 29th, 2011 at 11:58 AM ^
Better to wait and get the right guy than hire on the fly and then spend a year or two undoing the possible damage.
January 29th, 2011 at 4:41 PM ^
I fully agree with this comment, now that we actually have a defensive coordinator.
January 29th, 2011 at 2:06 PM ^
Think of how MSU fans feel with no OC. And I haven't even heard them linked to any one.
January 29th, 2011 at 5:18 PM ^
you shouldn't worry...the two spots were actually decided a bit ago, and you'll be happy with them. (or should be)
January 29th, 2011 at 11:43 AM ^
That would be a huge pick-up, as he's young and a midwest (Ohio) native. Plus, like others have noted, he could step in as DC when Mattison retires. This is where Brandon's "let's spend money" mantra needs to be put into effect.
And this is no way attacks Hoke or this staff, but I kind of wish UM had shown this same spending foresight under the RR era.
January 29th, 2011 at 11:54 AM ^
Is he old, white and balding enough?
January 29th, 2011 at 12:50 PM ^
And yes, I think he is.
January 29th, 2011 at 11:59 AM ^
He would be a great choice as the DB coach. Bringing in the NFL caliber coaches would definitely make the staff better and attract great recruits. I just hope Hoke continues to put the pieces together so well. I've had a great feeling about him since he became the coach.
January 29th, 2011 at 12:06 PM ^
I prefer cornflakes but NO's secondary has been good in the past few years. Plus he is from the Midwest so that is a plus.
January 29th, 2011 at 12:35 PM ^
as long as he can recruit. He may not know the midwest area, but I'm sure the other coaches could show him around. On the other hand, he may have some good contact down in LA, who knows?
January 29th, 2011 at 1:00 PM ^
How would he not know the midwest area? He grew up in Ohio, went to college in Ohio, interned with the Browns for two years, coached at Eastern Michigan for one year, and spent some time with the Packers. Did he get his memory erased in New Orleans?
