Nebraska To Big Ten Official
The Omaha News-Herald and Kansas City Star are reporting that Nebraska has officially applied to/accepted an invite from the Big Ten:
Late this morning, Nebraska officials contacted the Big Ten office, informing the league of the decision. Nebraska will become the 12th member of the Big Ten.
Meanwhile, University of Texas regents will meet next week to decide whether the Longhorns will remain in the Big 12 or switch to another conference.
Big 12 D-Day is Tuesday.
UPDATE: MSU AD Mark Hollis is tweeting it, so that's basically official. No more "anonymous sources."
UPDATE II: Showing the backbone we associate with true leadership, Hollis has deleted that tweet.
UPDATE III: From the Michigan AD:
Statement from Athletic Director Dave Brandon
I can confirm that Nebraska has applied to the Big Ten Conference for membership. I can also confirm that the Big Ten has done its due diligence as it relates to Nebraska. I expect that an announcement will be forthcoming from the Big Ten in regard to Nebraska’s membership very soon.
Here's a hint as to the outcome: The BTN is going to televise Nebraska's 6PM EST press conference.
This should get interesting.
this has to be the greatest week in the history of schadenfeude: three totally unrelated events that affect three things I hate: MSU, USC, and the Big Twelve.
I'm pulling for an off-season version of This Week in Schadenfreude - the amount of uncertainty in the past week or so has yielded some excellent discussion board angst.
Come on in you fuckers. Ol' painless is waiting.
Little brown jugs, Paul Bunyan trophy, etc... UM and Nebraska should play for the 97 National Championship every year.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
I like it a lot!
I'd prefer a line in the contract to join the big 10 stipulating that nebraska admits Michigan is the true national chamption
love it!
MOAR MONEY!!!!
Can't wait until we get revenge for that Alamo Bowl.
. . . and I'm a Spartan fan.
Peace
Ty
You're welcome.
TX Tech, A&M, and Baylor. They come as a package deal.
You think long and hard about hitting it, but you look at the pictures of those 3 above the headboard and you make up a quick excuse about having a meeting in Lincoln NE first thing in the morning.
Rumor is, according to Frank The Tank, that the Big East has finally given ND the join or leave ultimatum. Did the BigTen take Nebraska a week too soon?
uh no. if nebraska didn't come to the big ten, none of this would have ever happened.
that's a win-win for the Big 14 or 16.
If ND calls their bluff, then the Big East gets their high-level bowl bids back and the Irish can sit around and watch the NCAA basketball tournament from home. (Maybe the MVC would take them.)
If ND accepts, then they can get kicked around by some of the resurgent Big East programs until/if Kelly gets things turned around, while at the same time failing to reap television rewards like they had with NBC. (As a further bonus, no more annoying NBC announcers. Not that I watch them with the sound on anyway.)
I would actually rather have Nebraska right now over ND. Nebraska seems to be a team on the rise under Pelini - ND is still struggling with the misguided notion that they are an elite football factory.
Not to mention that Nebraska actually seems to WANT to come to the Big Ten. Their regents vote was 8-0 in favor, all of their fan polls are usually >80% in favor, and there is general excitement on their side. As far as ND, they'll come kicking and screaming - forced into it and not happy about it. Meh to that!
Amen!
The only reason ND is "better" is the TV dollars (which, to be fair, is a significant factor, but whatever.)
Culturally the entry of ND would be pretty seemless. They play M, MSU, Purdue every year. While they may go in kicking and screaming, a few years down the road, or at least at the first time they were in contention for a B10 title, they would grow to like being in a conference.
This would not be the clash of cultures the Texas schools would bring.
While I welcome Nebraska, who is a good cultural fit. I would also wholeheartedly welcome Notre Dame which would be great for the league and would be great for that school despite what they think.
First time ND loses an improtant September game but still has a B10 title and associated playoff/RoseBowl to play for, they will wonder what took them so long.
Quick Brian, add Nebraska to the Big Ten Blogroll!
I mean is this an acute departure from the Big 12 with amended schedules and shit. Or 2011, 2012, six years from now. When Damnit, When?!?!
My guess is that when this all shakes out it'll be 2012.
They are shooting for 2011 (this from the Nebraska Regents meeting).
There is nothing that says East/West divisions. I still think 2012 though.
That will have the bureaucrats in the Big Ten Headquarters and Athletic Departments doing some serious overtime work.
Welcome to the best conference in all the land Huskers!
Welcome Nebraska! Come join the party!!!
....Next time we play we play for the outright 1997 championship!
My relatives are gonna blow up! my dad side are Hawkeyes, Moms side are Huskers and im the lone Wolverine. 2011 can't come soon enough this is probably one of the most exciting things in college sports for me in a long time.
oddly fascinating. pretty exciting to get nebraska. welcome aboard. ($$$$$!!!)
I never thought June could be this interesting. I'd also like to thank Conference Expansion and USC Sanctions for going down right on time to squelch widespread Dorsey/Admissions panic. That could not have worked out better.
Things to look forward to:
- The Big XII complete collapse or plan for survival.
- That first Michigan-Nebraska game.
- Oh yeah, the start of this season too.
f#%king scumbag.
That really says something about the amount of news floating around when I forget to include the impending (PLEASE GOD PLEASE YOU OWE US SOMETHING) departure of Izzo.
Tom Izzo may be many things, but a scumbag is not one of them.
He is indeed a class act. And I hope he continues that act with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
This is going to do wonders for recruiting too.
by tapping into the wealth of football talent in nebraska?
and adding nervousness and instability to other conferences. What recruit wants to go to a school/team that may be conference-less a year from now?
Im not a husker fan i just live there! but Scott Frost, Eric Crouch,Ahman Green there from Nebraska there pretty good but no Husker talent will go out of state
If only Nebraska was added is the B10 going to split into 2 divisions?
Where have you been?
Big welcome to Big Red. May every M-N game from now til the end of time be a '97 National Championship rubber match.
Oh man, that Alamo bowl was atrocious. Never been so pissed watching a game. I don't blame Nebraska so much as the incompetant crew of monkeys from the Sun Belt Conference that was "officiating" the game.
Glad to see Nebraska join. We probably won't be in the same division, but I think it'd be fun if we put up our respective '97 hardware and make it into a trophy series.
I believe this immediately becomes the #2 rivalry game of all time.
All this "welcome to the Big Ten" stuff... I'm going to head in a different direction here.
Hu$ker$- you are $teroid abusing cheater$ who stole half a national championship from the MICHIGAN MEN it rightfully belonged to. I have never forgiven you, and I curse Tom CHEATborne every morning, first thing after I wake up. I hope you lose every Big Ten game for the rest of eternity, or until your joke of a football program gives up and calls it quits. Always remember that MICHIGAN has more wins all time than your sorry excuse for a football team. I look forward to watching you lose 60-0 to Northwestern. Or, maybe you will keep paying off the refs and you will only lose 45-10. Whatever. THIS IS BIG TEN FOOTBALL NOW. YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'VE GOTTEN YOURSELF INTO.
Careful... spittle isn't good for your keyboard.
