Another Sweet 16 Hype Video - "Survivor"
Poole's play is too good for just one hype video, right? Here's one I worked on that I'm pretty stoked for. Check out my latest, titled "Survivor"
Song: Survivor - 2WEI
A little #lunchtime entertainment.

Goosebumps
Great vid. Song, timing, clip selection all top-notch.
Pretty good stuff. As someone who does this for a living, I have a few notes. LOL. :)
Bring up the announcers voice in the mix. You can barely hear a word they say and its distracting. You can audio sting the important lines from them and still have the music move the piece along with emotion. Play the two together so they complement each other. As it is right now, I found the announcers distracting becasue they were so low in the mix..up their levels and it should make it really pop.
You can trim down the intro...easy to make some music cuts in there.
Also, I love the footage where you isolated the yellow in their jerseys. Either make it more consistent in the intro part or try and add in at parts towards the end.
Again...nice stuff.
As far as the announcer audio, I wanted to highlight the music audio since I thought the lyrics in this one were especially fitting. Finding the balance of being able to understand both lyrics and announcers without overwhelming the viewer is something I find extremely difficult. Totally understand how it can be frustrating and distracting if you're trying to listen to the announcers.
Agreed on intro - I cut off the first 30 seconds of the song, and decided to roll with the entire second half of the verse for two main reasons: 1) wanted to include all of Michigan's missed chances at the end of the game, 2) build up more time to the first "I'm a survivor". I guess you could call it a trade-off, but definitely agree it's on the lengthy side.
The color isolation was a bit tricky for some clips. Could have used a matte to better isolate the colors to just the player, but my After Effects was being wonky yesterday.
Thank you, garde, for weighing in here. Excellent criticisms and fantastic advice. I love when people approach it from a technical aspect and can enjoy those parts of the video as well.
Although tough to teach, one of the best pieces of advice I ever got from a top notch editor was "listen to your gut." If something internally says "something isn't just quite right" or you find yourself slghtly distracted at a moment, then it usually means something can be tweaked. Then you go back to where that is and try and problem solve it. Is it the music? The mix? The shot? etc etc etc.
Also...since I've been doing this for so long and spent so many hours locked in an edit room, its tough to put away my work mind when watching any type of content. :)
Again...good stuff.
Yep, that's great advice. I find that I have those best "something isn't just quite right" moments after stepping away for like 15 minutes or so. After watching the same stuff over and over, I always fall into the trap of getting used to how I set up a transition, audio levels, etc.
Obviously the viewer is going in blind, and to replicate their experience, have to do your best to try to view it with "fresh eyes" so to speak. Thanks again for the great tips.
extremely well done
Dope. Just dope (and I'm a 37 year-old dude with 3 kids who hasn't used that word since college).
Great job. Do you do this kind of work professionally?
If I can get 37 year old dudes to say "Dope" my work here is done :)
Don't do it professionally, have done a couple projects here and there for a little cash, but I plan to keep this a hobby. I do spend a very high percentage of my free-time doing this kind of stuff, though.
Dude that was fucking awesome!!
That was phenomenal. Well done, and thanks for sharing.
I can't wait until tomorrow - I both love the tournament and having a team in it, but man, the waits and the stress. Everything we both love and hate about hoops really.
Outstanding job, sir
Just signed in to say that this is one of the most amazing highlight videos I've ever seen. Amazing work. Thanks!
Cuz I got some chills.
GO BLUE!!
Ozzy! Ozzy! Ozzy!
