So, Jim Mcelwain...hypothetically...
Hypothetically, how would we feel about him as the 10th assistant?
Edit: Secret's out.

If he does a good job. Thats all that I care about.
We just wont make fun of him for being a Shark Fucker anymore :(
February 14th, 2018 at 4:43 PM ^
I think he'd be a great hire. His first year at FL he was being compared to JH for a bit (until we thumped them and everything went South in FL). Assuming he can accept and thrive in a smaller role, and his personality/football philosophy blend well, he seems a sharp guy.
Besides, any guy that humps sharks has got to have a hell of an attitude.

The timing of your post is ironic.

What does that mean for Drevno and Pep's responsibilities?
Drevno - OL and "run-game coordinator" (whatever that means)
Pep - QB and "pass-game coordinator" (whatever that means)
I think it means we will have (3) $1 million/year offensive assistants...

Starting to really dislike the amount of titles out there today.

Probably shouldn't be all that excited.

that 10th assistant decision has somehow turned into the defining moment of Michigan football history. It's pretty amusing.

The shark humper? No thanks. He seems like a giant douche.
He's a OC/QB coach. Is that really what we need? Seems like an odd fit. I also don't see him sticking around long. Its suprising that he hasn't gotten a head coaching position at a MWC or MAC type school at the minimum.
Also, the whole thing with how he handled the aftermath of the shark humping photo and the death threat claims.

February 14th, 2018 at 5:13 PM ^
Positionally, he's a very good fit. It seems like he would take over as OC and I'm having a hard time finding a reason to dislike that.
The way he left Florida might make it hard to find a HC job for awhile. It took Kiffin 3 years.

It seems (to my uneducated eye) that we are seeing player development. WR's got better slowly last year. O line got better in run blocking (pass blocking still sucked). RB's seemed to get better....
...but QB development seems to have ended with both of Speight's injuries. O'Korn didn't move the bar at all. Peters floundered (as might be expected).
So, maybe he can use his expertise to fast track WR development, and Harbaugh, Pep, and Drev can spend more time on the O line, RB's, and QB's.
February 15th, 2018 at 8:32 AM ^
Your comment on qb development seems to boil down to a very small sample size. You seem to acknowledge that Speight's stall was injury related and Peters was about as expected. So, it comes down to O'Korn. Yes JOK didn't develop, but maybe he simple hit his ceiling and nobody would have been able to develop him further. Ie, it doesn't neccessarily illustrate coaching failure.

We don't "need" to recruit the hell out of Ohio to win this conference on the regular. Also, Al Washington, the new LB coach, was hired to recruit Ohio. He's a Cinci guy.

February 14th, 2018 at 5:06 PM ^
In all seriousness, he didn’t forget offense. He just couldn’t dig out of Urbans shadow. Lane Kiffen sucked as a HC, but was good as an OC. Gotta take risks.
February 14th, 2018 at 5:11 PM ^
It says a lot, I think, that Saban hired him and retained him until he left of his own volition. I know McElwain had the benefit of Saban's players at Alabama, but Saban would have been quick to move on from him if he weren't producing at a very high level.

I was very impressed with what he did at CSU (living out here, probably saw more CSU coverage than most). If you remove the recency bias, he's an absolute steal for a WR/OC position. I think he'll be great assuming that he approaches the job with the same passion as an up-and-comer.
Also: The MGoBlog community can beat a meme to death far beyond the point of being funny anymore. The shark meme is dead, man.

I mean it was all of three nights ago everyone who wanted to settled in and gave their opinion of Coach McElwain. Couldn't even get to the second odd date without a rehash. Smart money says he'll be available should Harbaugh go a calling. Next

Honestly, hate this move.
Before the season we were all saying he was over rated, used bag men for recruiting, and couldn't coach an offense especially a quaterback. I wouldn't like the hire, and I think it'd be intellectually inconsistent and hypocritical of myself, and many others on the blog, to say this would be a home run hire.
February 14th, 2018 at 5:44 PM ^
Define "we were all." I am on this blog entirely too much and I don't recall bagmen accusations. Overrated as a head coach? Sure. We're not hiring him as a head coach.
February 14th, 2018 at 5:50 PM ^
There's been a general assumption that most SEC coaches use bagmen. I've been on the blog (not always posting) for around 2 years and there have been a few rumors. He's not a main target but I don't like his vibes. Ask the sharks
February 14th, 2018 at 5:58 PM ^
I see. So it wasn't actually a case of EVERYONE accusing him of using bagmen. It was more of a general discussion of the use of bagmen in the SEC. Florida is a part of the SEC, therefore guilty by association . McElwain is coach of said SEC team. You want no part of that hipocracy. Got it.
February 15th, 2018 at 8:43 AM ^
Hypothetically, even if he used bagmen to recruit at Florida. Maybe it is just the SEC way and he had to to keep up. Further, his role in recruiting as head coach is obviously different than what his role will be here. Unless he does shady stuff against the wishes of Harbaugh, what does it matter for Michigan?

On the coaching side of things, I think it's an excellent hire for an offensive position coach or coordinator. On the recruiting end, it's not so great. He doesn't really seem like much of a recruiter historically.
