OT: AAPD wants Skeeps' liquor license taken away
According to a memo from the AAPD to the Liquor License Review Committee, the PD is recommending that Scorekeepers' liquor license not be be renewed. Police had to make 156 visits in 2017. Could be a sad day for many on this board, as that would surely put the place out of business.

And then they changed their name to Express Pizza.

Which came first? Pizza Express or Express Pizza?
We ended up calling it Express Pizza Express.

And old farts know that Rick's used to be all live shows back in the early 80s. They adapted to the tastes of the folks in school now, and good for them, but I do feel some nostalgia for a Steve Nardella show from The Day.

Skeeps actually used to be a funeral home (and still had weird related stuff in the 3rd floor attic as late as 2006). If you wanna be all old fart like that.

just make the pops cost 10 bucks each and be super lax about checking for flasks in the bathrooms. business saved.

it's really just the fact that ann arbor is the most concentrated place of rich out of state sorority girls.
wrigley field is in the vicinity of a ton of bars. i doubt everyone is going straight to the field.

Not that surprising... it's a car driven state, people aren't going to Uber from Utica to Comerica Park or whatever. Ann Arbor is the only place in Michigan with a real carsharing culture.
February 2nd, 2018 at 12:57 PM ^
This just reflects that most of Skeep's patrons don't have a driver's license yet. Nothing against Skeeps personally, but in my day, it was packed with high schoolers/freshman. Not surprised that it is the target of a crackdown.
February 2nd, 2018 at 1:23 PM ^
That's quite the leap. Doesnt it make more sense that its a bar, people go there to drink, and therefore dont want to drive there, regardless of the age?

I have a hard time believing that 156 visits in 2017 is really that more than any other year. We can't put the most ubered to place in the state out of business!!
February 2nd, 2018 at 12:09 PM ^
Probably put Uber out of business as well!

Yeah, that's probably exactly the problem.

Sure, if you like preying on underage girls and having to constantly worry where you step or sit.
I guess I wouldn't exactly be shocked if I just described a large chunk of mgousers.

For those counting 156 = 52*3, so they're saying that the cops had to go to Skeeps every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for the whole year. Almost impressive really

On average yah, could be multiple times in a night though. Or do you think they took that into account?

The Maynard St garage has an AAPD outpost/office that is maybe 200 feet from Skeeps front door.

Brian Griese will pour a forty on the curb in Skeeps' honor.

Hope he doesn't throw the 40 thru the window, though!

In reality, it's just a ruse to return the establishment to its proper name: Dooley's.
February 2nd, 2018 at 3:06 PM ^
Had my first ever pitcher of green beer in Dooley's on St. Patrick's Day 1975! It also was the first bar to have tables with those new-fangled video games built in. Great times!

What will people do without one of the worst bars on the planet?
Seriously people, just go to the Jug or Ashley's.

Skeeps and Ricks were always adventures. Honestly the place with the sketchiest/roughest crowd I found in Ann Arbor were not college bars; it was Rush St.

It's going to be a jazz club when it reopens.

...hearing this news makes me want to visit for the fun of it.

I went to Dooley's maybe three times during my time in Ann Arbor (including the infamous (for me) homecoming of a certain Jim Harbaugh during his first year in the NFL). I was a Rick's man through and through.

I loved the $5 burgers, fries and quality pint of beer special on Wednesdays. My friend ordered 2 servings once, because we were there for like 3 hours.

Does Skeeps have their own bouncers/security staff? If not, do it. If they do, double the staff, or outsource on the weekends. If the cops get called once, it should be viewed as a problem for Skeeps ownership. If you step out of line, you get put in a sleeper hold and dragged out by PED users. This seems to work at Old Shillelagh.
February 2nd, 2018 at 12:57 PM ^
In a word, good. Never understood how that place continued to exist as what is essentially an underage bar.
February 2nd, 2018 at 1:25 PM ^
Also baffled. Not necessarily happy about it (college kids have access to alcohol anyway so I dont really have a problem if they are drinking at Skeeps or a frat or a house party).

I went back a year or two ago and it was way more ratchet than I remembered. It was always pretty rowdy, but this seemed like another level. Saw a guy pour a full beer on his head then smash the bottle in the middle of the dance floor. Multiple fights, etc.
Maybe I'm just getting old lol

Skeeps in the summertime. It's a pretty cool layout for a bar... but I've only set foot when school is in session one time. I always joke that if you're 21 you're two years too old. I spend most of my time at Alley, Babs, Last Word, Live, Berg, Charleys, and Lep... depending on the day.
February 2nd, 2018 at 1:44 PM ^
If its summer get your butt over to Dominick's and Sangria your cares away.
February 2nd, 2018 at 1:44 PM ^
IIRC the City Boards only recommend to the State Liquor Control Board (but that recommendation is taken with a lot of authority). I'm assuming Skeeps is going to lawyer up and hopefully get their license at the local level (or if need be) the state.
Personally, I liked Ricks over Skeeps in undergrad. Skeeps always on Tuesdays seemed shoulder to shoulder and beer spilled everywhere. Ricks at least didn't get shit spilled all over the place.

Definitely wandered through some unlocked doors upstairs at skeeps. There's an abandoned building/apartment up there from what I drunkingly remember. Peed in the toilet up there too.

I was a four nights a week Rick's guy senior year. Jug every now and then. Charlie's less so. TD's was the spot sophomore year. Didn't attend class much.
