CFP (8 team format is right around the corner)
The calls and or groans for an 8 team CFP are only getting louder and more frequent. Some even want a 12 or 16 team format. I am thinking that starting in 2019 we will see at least an 8 team CFP. Here's to our coach, Jim Harbaugh, and the team breaking out in 2018 and regaining some lost luster on the national stage.
The Outback Bowl was an extremely bitter pill for me, as well as others, I am certain
To my fellow Michigan alums, fans living in the state of Michigan, hang tough. I know the heckling and smart a$$ fans. I lived in Columbus, Ohio for 25 year (1990 to 2015). It was unbearable at times
We have the right coach, albeit one that will have to make some adjustments and changes he did/does not want to make. Jim Harbaugh is the answer to awakening the sleeping giant. We are still slumbering but not for much longer. 2016 was a BIG missed opportunity. 2017 was almost as expected, though not admittedly by most of us.

They signed up for the MGoBlog Rewards Dining program. And you can do it, too! Go to Rewards Network, input your card, and after you complete your first dine at a participating restaurant & pay with that card you will get 1,000 MGoPoints. It's as easy as that, NashvilleBLUE.
Get 3X spend on all dines when you use your Chase MGoBlog Reserve Visa. If you use this referral link www.imgur.com/a/G6rU8 to apply for the card then we both get a 10,000 MGoPoint bonus --enough points for one round trip premium economy ticket to anywhere in the lower 48. That's on top of the 90,000 MGoPoints signup bonus you will get when you are approved for the card!
And don't forget -- simply holding the Chase MGoBlog Reserve Visa gives you Diamond status on all B1G fan sites/message boards including MGoBlog!
So you see, NashvilleBlue, MGoPoints are among the most valuable and useful points in the industry. As I've said, you can earn them many ways including credit card signup bonuses, Rewards Dining, shopping portals, and most especially by providing helpful content on MGoBlog. It's well worth your time to collect MGoPoints any way you can and anyone who says otherwise is a Gordan Ramsay-level financial Luddite.

What about those of us that don't live in Michigan? Are we supposed to crack under the pressure of other team's fans? Or just hang limp?

I can't get past the fact that this guy admits to having lived in Columbus for 25 years. No wolverine does that.
Given that equivocation is the easiest form of deception to get away with, I'm guessing this is really just an OSU fan bitter for not having made the playoff (and getting skunked by Clemson again) and trying to drum up support for the 8 team system.

8 is the right number....it's manageable and will insure the deserving tems are in.
I'd also like to see some of the lesser bowls go away. I get the whole "it's good for the kids to get to a bowl" thing but some are unwatchable and the attendance won't sustain them.

Do you really think all of those 4th rate bowl games fund themselves? TV revenue sustains them. While I've always known that, I didn't realize the extent of it until I read Seth's piece prior to the games this year. You should look for his bowl preview article and give it a read. To boil it down, ESPN pretty much funds them. The locals raise prices enough to make money despite the lack of attendance, and ESPN makes it share with ad revenues during a live game broadcast vs some recorded non-game material. Attendance means virtually nothing.
And like Yost said, don't watch them... I didn't see most of the bowls this year, after watching every single one in previous lives...

Look Wylie Cyote, taking you at your word that you are a Wolverine, there are a few things to keep in mind when posting to MGoBlog. I've only recently started posting as well, but I've been a lurker for years. Once you've finished reading MGoBlog's helpful advice on the subject, consider the following as well:
1) Start a new forum topic only when you have information to share. 2) Use only decent sources, not Chatsports. 3) Use a few links and/or video content. 4) Respect Michigan's student athletes; they deserve it. 5) Try to spell correctly and use normal sentence structure to include punctuation. 6) Your title (or reply subject) needs to match the content of your post so that people who skim titles will have a decent idea of what the substance of your comments are.

Here is why 4 is best and shouldn't change.
1) To date, no undefeated power 5 team has missed the playoffs. That means that at the beginning of the season every power 5 team has a ticket to the playoffs. The second after they lose a game they leave thier fate to a room of men and women. Until then they control their own destiny. Wisconsin wins the BIG champ game, they are in. OSU wins both games they lost, they are in. That is why you cannot (should not) complain if your team doesnt get in. They had their chance and blew it. In the NCAA Tournament 72 teams make the tournament and people still complain when thier team doesnt make it. We complain about 12 seeds not getting in!
2) This is a playoff to determine the best team in college football, NOT A CHARITY. UCF has no legitimate gripe. Yes they went undefeated. Who cares? They played the 54th ranked schedule. The lowest playoff team played the 7th ranked. Even if you expand the playoffs to 16, the next lowest SOS is Washington at 26. Play the Power 5 teams week in and week out and if you survive the meat grinder then you have earned a spot. Beating Memphis twice doesnt cut it. Yes, Alabama played Mercer, but UCF played Austin Peay. Alabama played 4 ranked teams. UCF played the same ranked team twice.

What prompts you to believe the tournaments to date have been seeded randomly ... or that they would become more random at 6? To date, I've felt that seeds #1 and #2 were generally obvious and deserved and that #4 (and sometimes #3) were the ones most steeped in controversy.
What's wrong with giving the obvious and deserved positions one fewer tourney game? The best argument I can think of is that the extra rest taken while idle during the "pre-semis" might make those teams rusty in the semis, but that doesn't appear to be your angle. What is your angle?
Also, why could we give auto-bids to P5 conference champs at a 8-team playoff but not at a 6-team playoff? A 6-team playoff constituted solely of conference champs would appear to be most in line with "valuing the regular season." I could argue that every wild card added beyond 6 would (at first blush seem to) act to diminish that.
January 8th, 2018 at 3:54 PM ^
Probably not, but I'll address this anyway.
You feel #1 and #2 are obvious. They are not. Clemson was 12-1 and #1. Oklahoma 12-1 and #2. Georgia was 12-1 and #3. This is completely random. They all beat some good teams. They all had an ugly loss. They all won their completely independent and in no way relatable or comparable conferences. None of us know if it's harder to win the ACC or SEC or if Big XII scoring is crazy because of shitty D or superb O. Nobody knows.
Why do two of these teams get a week off and the other has to battle a top-5 team? Because it's random. There is no qualification process for these seeds. It's a bunch of old people picking names out of a hat.
Same goes for Washington/Clemson/OSU in '16. And MSU/Alabama/Oklahoma in '15. Which one gets a free bye and which two have to spend that same week in a death battle? Pure random opinion.
My "angle" is that your "obvious and deserved positions" are figments of your imagination. There's nothing obvious. If the committee likes your face, you get a bye.
Finally, yes, you could definitely have 5 autobids in a 6-team playoff, which is why I added "PLUS" and then made a secondary point of why it should be 8 instead of 6. 1st point = Auto Bids wouldn't devalue regular season. 2nd point = Byes are stupid.
You need to have 6 (not 5) because you need to include the top Group of 5 qualifier - UCF this year, WMU last year, etc. If you're going to flat omit the G5 teams, just call them 1-AA and end the charade. So there's 6. Now tell me where an undefeated Notre Dame goes in your 6-team playoff. Nowhere. "MAKE THEM JOIN A CONFERENCE!", the boneheads scream from the cheap seats. No. It's Notre Dame. They're Independent. Welcome to the 1900s.
That won't always, nor even regularly, pose a problem, but it could. And so could a situation like this year where Alabama is likely the best team in the country and they get shut out of their conference title game because there's always going to be problems when you try to determine a champion by making 14 teams play just 7 or 8 conference opponents. It's impossible. There aren't enough games to support the size of these conferences.
So you can blow the whole thing up and redraw conferences, TV deals, etc., which is an absolute pipe dream. Or you can be smart and just allow for the '17 Alabama or '16 OSU that probably deserves to be there but got caught in some ludicrous B1G East tie-breaker, by opening up 1 or 2 at large spots for non-champs.
And then, guess what? No random byes for unsupportable reasons. A simple 8 team bracket with everyone on relatively equal footing playing an equal amount of games. And every FBS school in America has a direct path to the College Football playoff on September 1st. Win your conference and get in. If you don't make it? Maybe you're that Top-5 team that got screwed and can grab one of two at-large bids. If your school was omitted from the at-large and you feel you were wronged? Eat shit. Should've won your conference.
There has never been more than 1 highly regarded Group of 5 team in a single season that I can recall. But if that happens, and starts happening regularly, then maybe you look at 16 with all 10 confernces and 6 at-large. Until then, 8 answers all problems and doesn't have the unfair and unnecessary byes of a 6-team format.
Have I mentioned that Byes are a terrible idea?
