Army-Navy in a Snowstorm: Must See TV. (Open Thread)
I figured I'd turn on Army-Navy because the game is legitimately in question this year and there's not much else to do and it's Army-Navy.
Turns out it will be played in a driving snowstorm.
Football is a great sport for many reasons. One of those reasons is that it is a game for all seasons. Other sports have a set range of acceptable conditions; football will play in all of them. And it will look spectacular.
This is going to be awesome.

I heard when the game started that the uniform is in honor of the 10th Mountain Division.

GO ARMY - BEAT NAVY

That missed FG is trouble for Army. I don't care if it's only 13-7.

Oops. Guess not.

Army-Navy 4th quarters are some of the most dramatic football you will ever see.

He's short, just inside the 1.

TD Army BEAT NAVY

Navy needs to open the playbook a little bit now.

Especially after that botched snap.

Go Army. Beat Navy.

Making a 48 yard FG under these conditions will be Navy Legendary. Navy already has enough legends. Go Army.
Welp, gave it the old academy try.

Gotta feel for that kicker. Oof.

Can't blame the kicker for that. Making that would have been incredible.
December 9th, 2017 at 6:12 PM ^
He’ll blame himself but almost no one in this Earth at any level of football would’ve made that kick in this kind of weather.
December 9th, 2017 at 6:11 PM ^
Arguably one of the games of the year.

and as Gary Danielson pointed out, but for those two procedure penalties that pushed Navy back 10 yards, the kick trajectory probablywould have put the ball through the uprights.
Anyway, great basic, block and tackle football. A very entertaining game to watch.

I very much suspected Army was going to pull it off after the 2nd to last stop, right about when my 3 year old came downstairs with a bunch of lego stormtroopers and started rooting for the stormtrooper team.
December 9th, 2017 at 6:23 PM ^
Well, that sucked. You know there's something wrong with the world when Army wins 2 in a row...
But what a game - it had everything but passing!! I feel bad for the kicker, he got it so close. Take away the two procedure calls, and I bet he nails the 38-ydr. But that's not how it sorts out.
Class by the Army coach, too, for shouting out the Navy OC's kid before saying anything else after the game. Great display all around.

... is what a game from 1917 looked like, I guess.
The quarterbacks combined went 2-2 for 22 yards. Some will call it "old school" or "throwback." While I can't stand Big XII games ("let's try to play without defense"), I can't say this was good football either. For ten minutes or so, fine. For three hours, it was incredibly monotonous.
(Really, really trying to avoid any O'Korn references...)
(Whoops.)

You're right, it wasn't good football.
It was great football.
Not great passing football, no, and thanks to the snow some of the precision of the offenses (which are fantastic) was lost. But this was a game about blocking and tackling and making plays and, yes, even heart and effort.
Every possession mattered, which meant every play mattered, which meant every small mistake or extra piece of effort (not even a question that a DE running back to just barely trip Perry up at the 10 was the play of the game) matters. And it all came down to the last play. In a driving snowstorm. Between two teams that desperately, desperately wanted to beat each other.

The Army-Navy Game was a true rivalry and both teams left it all out on the field. I really enjoyed watching this game today. The snow and cold was just an added bonus.
