A little pricey, but not crazy, and well worth it. Get the shrimp and grits.

This is where shrimp and grits was invented, was it not?

I second Top of the Hill.

There are a few places off the top of my head. Med deli for middle eastern, kipos for greek, tallulas for turkish, q shack for quick bbq, old pit for fancy bbq (in Raleigh), viceroy for indian (great place in durham). Could give you a few more options if you're interested.
November 29th, 2017 at 1:44 PM ^
Med Deli and Kipos are both great recommendations!

Viceroy is legit

Only the best for God. Seriously though, why do people always say "the best"? Why not ask for recommended places or something? "What is the best" just seems like an absurd question when you're talking about something nonspecific and subjective.

Order water and turn it into wine. Will save you a bundle.

Don't forget, he could do the fish and loaves thing.

Knuckledraggers has $.10 wings and $3 ice cold Keystone Lights.

Stay on Franklin St:
Spanky's across from Top of the Hill is ok.
Burger= Al's Burgers.
Sushi= Spicy 9
S'up Dog? = hot dogs
November 29th, 2017 at 12:44 PM ^
Decent burger, great sweet potato fries
November 29th, 2017 at 1:00 PM ^
Is it still there? Former girlfriend was at UNC for Law school in mid 80's and was a cute waitress there. Made a bus trip there thru Toledo, Pittsburgh, Baltimore then Chapel Hill. Never again ...20 hrs on busses for a 10 hr trip.

I'll second Spanky's. Get the rosemary chicken pasta.
If Hectors were still open, you would've been able to get a bacon cheeseburger in a pita with chili cheese fries that can't be beat.
There's also a chinese restaurant on Franklin Street that serves Xiao Long Bao, if you're familiar with that.

In Raleigh, The Pit is awesome bbq. In Durham, Guglhupf is awesome. I thought Top of the Hill in Chapel Hill was decent.
Overall, I would say Ann Arbor has better restaraunts than the Triangle. However, the floor is higher there than AA.
November 29th, 2017 at 1:15 PM ^
Can't ever go wrong with Dame's Chicken and Waffles in downtown Durham either. Love that place!
Rise is also pretty frickin awesome too. Amazing chicken biscuits, and I think there are locations pretty close to Chapel Hill as well.
November 29th, 2017 at 2:04 PM ^
Rise is tremendous, but it's breakfast. True Flavors is where it's at if you're around for breakfast (SoDu on NC55)
November 29th, 2017 at 1:16 PM ^
The Pit used to be awesome when Ed Mitchell was the pitmaster....now it's very 'Meh'.

November 29th, 2017 at 2:48 PM ^
Ah, that's too bad.
November 29th, 2017 at 1:52 PM ^
The Pit is seriously the most overrated place in all of Raleigh. Their BBQ is mediocre at best. You can stop in at Backyard or Q-Shack for legit BBQ. Backyard is a dive but there's an hour line out the place at lunch.
November 29th, 2017 at 1:59 PM ^
November 29th, 2017 at 2:16 PM ^
That's the one. Was on Man vs Food. It's also 1/3 the price of the Pit.
November 29th, 2017 at 2:50 PM ^
Backyard was great, that's true. Only went there once or twice when I lived in the area unfortunately.
November 29th, 2017 at 1:05 PM ^
God, where are you eating? My family and I would like to join you so we can say we ate with God. Is Squids still open?

Durham food is better than Raleigh or Chapel Hill, and it's not close.
South Durham (15 minutes from Smith)
Kokyu Na-Mean (on NC55) - Korean / Southern fusion - amazing and about $13. Does not serve alcohol. $$ https://www.facebook.com/kokyuBBQ/
Bars: The Glass Jug on NC55. https://www.facebook.com/glassjugbeerlab/ Great selection + bottle shop.
Morrisville: (20 minutes from Smith)
Dharani (on NC54) - Indian and amazing $$
Downtown Durham: (20 min)
Dos Perros: Upscale Mexican with a great bottled beer list ($$S)
The Durham Hotel: Best views, pricey, Beard watch list ($$$$)
M Kokko / M Sushi - Asian chicken / sushi - make a reservation now, it's incredible ($$$) https://www.facebook.com/MkokkoDurham/
Bull City Burgers - Good beer (micro), better burgers, all locally sourced ($$) https://www.facebook.com/BullCityBurger/
Goorsha: Ethiopian ($$) better than the Blue Nile https://www.facebook.com/GoorshaDurham/ full bar
Chapel Hill:
Vimalas on Franklin (Indian)
Carborro:
Milltown - great bar great selection and great food - pretty close to the venue
Breweries:
Bond Brothers in Cary (#1 new brewery in US for 2016 per BA) or Durty Bull in Durham (#37 new brewery in US per BA). Don't waste your time at Steel String.
