PSA: Booing is NOT okay
https://twitter.com/grant_newsome/status/906620103525101568
Hearing the Michigan 'faithful' boo today made me sick. Completely disappointed in that display of 'fandom'.
Expressing yourself by rolling your lips in just before forcing out your foul breath is not okay. If you are not willing to cheer and encourage your team on while they are not performing up to expectations, don't buy a ticket or go to the game. Just because you spend money on entertainment does not entitle you to act that way.
If you want someone to succeed, do you boo them to or do you encourage them to push through and persevere? People forget these are impressionable young men who hear that and are affected by it. Yes, they need to be able to play through adversity. Do you really want to be the cause of that? These players want to hear you cheering loud and proud. Do it.
The masses need to know this is not okay. Don't let anyone in your section get away with this without ridicule. This needs to stop now.

Yes they can take it. Does it make it helpful? Do you think booing is a good look for the fanbase when people see/hear that on tv?
September 9th, 2017 at 5:36 PM ^
Good look for who? Why are you worried what other people think?
The team played like shit. They got booed. That's what happens when you are an athlete.

Impressions are more important than people realize, and saying "you shouldn't care what other people think" doesn't change that. Fans should want to be known for supporting their team.

Is the most ridiculously, over the top, supportive of this team.
Small moments of booing is not going to change a 100 plus year reputation that was built.
Give me a break dude.

When you find a fanbase that has never boo'd their team before go ahead and let me know. It is human emotion. It is part of sports. It neither hurts nor helps anything. It really isn't a big deal.

You can't really make that comparison. Sports isn't real life, in all honesty.
September 9th, 2017 at 6:42 PM ^
Exactly, I think a 300lb 20 year old better be able to take a boo. Or at least make a block...

It feels like something to be posted in the middle of a season that ends with "You Raise Me Up".
It's a 100,000 people together in a place to be happy, they can't be controlled. If you go play football for a team that draws those kind of crowds, well, you gotta deal with that.
Now let's hope there won't be too many situations this year where people feel a need to vent their frustration.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:54 PM ^
Well the game did have a very Brady-Richrod esque feel to it...

A 12 year old? Like I feel bad making fun of someone who obviously is a child.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:45 PM ^
Oh, the "everything is recruiting" angle.
Right. Everything is about stroking the egos of fragile teenagers who might not sign on the dotted line to receive a world-class education at an institution with 125 years of football tradition because the team doesn't wear enough uniformz and the fans boo.
Come on now.

The game was very much not in hand when the booing occurred, but cool red herring.

We got? We weren't losing?
The team was a 35 point favorite, to a garbage team. The fact that they were up 3 late, is a joke.
September 9th, 2017 at 9:13 PM ^
If this thread is any indication I understand why other fans find us insufferable. They won. They didn't play well. This is a teachable moment for a young team in a sport that requires them.. Sorry if you lost a few bones because they didn't cover.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:48 PM ^
or because they care about the people in the stands..and the people in the stands aren't cheering because they like the players as individuals. It's a bargain between parties who feel they're getting something out of the whole thing.
If the team underperforms, those people in the stands feel that the team isn't doing their part of the bargain so they don't feel any obligation to do their own part either.

Wahhhhs about the fans booing aren't any better. Recruiting? Seriously, you're overthinking this.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:42 PM ^
You have 100,000 people there who paid very large amounts of money to watch a much better team play well against an inferior team.
The better team underperformed, considerably. Do you really think all 100,000 people are going to politely clap like they are listening to their kids plan in a wildly out of tune elementary school band concert?
September 9th, 2017 at 5:43 PM ^
No I don't. Does it make it right?
September 9th, 2017 at 6:27 PM ^
That's up to them; they are the customers.
One thing I do know: This post is not going to do anything to alter the behavior.

Now that we have made the entire M football experience nothing more than a monetary transaction between quasi-compensated players and paying customers, where decency, substance and character have no place....let's go work on marketing the hell of of the "brand" and make a few more bucks, cuz in the end, that is all there is.

You're really going to pull the "college athletes should be paid" card? They're reciving an education from one of, if not the best public institutions in America FOR FREE. That same education would cost someone like me $200,000+ and I'm supposed to feel bad about that? Save your sob stories for someone else

Food, lodging, training, clothing all paid for. Training from some of the best coaches in the country in some of the best facilities in the country. Plus, most of them get a stipend for lodging, which is always more than they need to make rent.
