You have probably also considered this BUT train? I have taken the train from AA to Chicago a few times and I highly recommend it (pretty chill and easy to do work).

probably leaning towards Megabus; they'll miss the tailgate but at least we can catch the game.

Wait, there was a ride board? Well CRAP!
I always avoided the basement in the Union, probably because it had that funny smell I never got used to.

"they'll pick you up". I know renting a car ain't cheap - but being in the Big House for the season opener is worth it!

I just checked Greyhound and it wouldn't work either (scheduled arrival 12:40).
On the bright side, Megabus (when it doesn't hit someone/something or catch fire) is almost always on time or early. :)

Amtrak isn't a totally awful option either. You'd have to leave the night before, but its probably a 5-6 hour ride from Ann Arbor. Less cramped than a car or bus too.
Should be a quicker ride, but because the train system in this country is so unreliable anywhere outside the NE Corridor, you get what you get.

Just looked out of curiosity, there's a 6PM train that gets in at 11PM. I've taken that one before and it's usually on time/slightly early. If they can crash on a couch, that's the best option--though tickets are a little pricier than normal at this point.
Could have sworn there was an overnight train, but nope.

Capitol Ltd - Departs CHI 6:40 PM, Arrives Toledo 11:39 PM
Sit on a bench over night then Bus 6049 - Departs TOL 6:30 AM goes through DET Arrives AA at 8:30 AM.
Much better connection to the bus from the east. This is a pretty gross itenerary - esp the overnight in a Toledo train / bus station

Gosh, there's no reason to spend 14 hours getting from Chicago to Ann Arbor. Just rent a car at that point.

Rental cars for around $50 before any promo codes or deal searching.

an 18 wheeler will eventually pick you up if no one else does. Just put a doublerolled sweatsock in your pants and smile with you thumb out. You'll get there eventually.
