Justin Upton Headed to Angels
Seems to be that way.

I just didn't think this franchise would go through with a complete and total fire sale, but it's looking more likely every day. I thought they'd value ticket sales a little more, but oh well.

They kicked the can down the road for year, after year, after year. There's no other alternative.
August 31st, 2017 at 3:33 PM ^
was talking about how good a fit Verlander would be in Colorado.
They also said the big stars are asking to be traded away from Detroit. There is no help (per the talking heads) in the Detroit farm system.
August 31st, 2017 at 3:41 PM ^
Plenty of buyers for JV. Dude is still pitching at a very, very high level. And I think he'd go even stronger playing for a championship.
Now is the time to move him.
August 31st, 2017 at 4:01 PM ^
He's cleared waivers and would be eligible for postseason rosters if he's traded today. Wait until tomorrow and teams would have to use an injury exception.
August 31st, 2017 at 4:35 PM ^
He has a say in where he goes. I'm not sure Colorado would be my choice. Christ, he gives up enough dingers without altitude problems. I admit I don't know how much he values good skiing country.
August 31st, 2017 at 5:10 PM ^
That would seem a much better option for Verlander.

And I suppose if they slash payroll, attendance isn't so important. Just a bummer
August 31st, 2017 at 10:45 PM ^
They mortaged the future to try to win the WS for Iltch before he died. They're paying the price for it. They shouldn't have fired Dombrowski when they disagreed with the call for a fire sale when he traded away Cespedes and Price. Dombrowski would've adusted and make some calls for trades where he could re-stock the farm system. He has done it in the past and knows how to rebuild from ground up when he took over the worst team in history to a WS contender.

Sounds like this is being done strictly for getting the money off books.
Don't expect much in return.

Something is better than nothing I guess. I'm assuming Upton was opting out at the end of the year anyway.

August 31st, 2017 at 3:11 PM ^
Not true. Upton is under contract through 2021 for $22 Millon a year but he can opt out after this year. If they would have held onto Martinez and gave him the qualifiying offer they would have only gotten a 3rd or 4th round pick because that pick is now linked to payroll, not the 1st Round or sandwich pick that it used to be.
August 31st, 2017 at 3:51 PM ^
Not how it works.
August 31st, 2017 at 4:23 PM ^
it is. With the new cba Tigers are over the luxury. They get 4th for JD and nothing for Upton, ruomors were true he would get the same in the open market but with a contender and the Tigers would get nothing. Something for JD and JUP was better than nothing.

make them take Zimmerman too. If we are dumping salary, and not getting anything coming back our way, they should take some of our pricey crap, too.
August 31st, 2017 at 2:22 PM ^
Sell, sell, sell. Unfortunately, the Tigers are early in an extended wilderness period.
So are the rest of the Detroit pro teams except for... maybe the Lions? But the Lions are the Same Old Lions and will be for the foreseeable future. I mean, what more can we expect? They just way overpaid to resign Matthew Stafford, a deal that guarantees they won't be able to build a competent roster around him. And I agree with the move because what choice do they have? These are the Lions, we haven't had a QB this good since the 50s.

are in best position to be a SB contenders moreso than any other Detroit franchises. They made the playoff last season. Stafford is a top 8 QB in the league and that's worth the money. To say, they overpaid him aren't paying attention to the QB market. He will be pushed out of top 5 by next off-season which makes him a bargian considering his age and his ascending performance.
They have a shit ton of cap space to get help they needed next season with 43 million of cap space which is top 6 in terms of unused cap space for 2018 off-season. They're in great position to acquire assets and get better.

lol, they got a good GM in Bob Quinn who came from the Patriots. They got better depth and addressed OL. I can see them winning NFC North within the next couple years.
Only one that I'm not confident is Jim Caldwell. I just don't think he's a good coach.

I am a huge Detroit homer but there teams aren't in a position to compete for championships the next few years. The Lions may technically have the best chance, but I really see their ceiling as winning one playoff game because, well, they're the Lions.

#Angels and #Tigers are in agreement on Justin Upton trade, source confirms. @Ken_Rosenthal was first to report. @MLB

It's going to be a long rebuild if the Tigers deal half of their team for nothing more than a salary dump.

Maybe he opts out... I'm pretty happy about this, because anything can happen between now and the end of the season. If JUp gets hurt, maybe he doesn't opt out. He wasn't going to do us any good over the next few seasons anyway, best to make sure we don't have to pay the rest of the contract.
August 31st, 2017 at 2:51 PM ^
But Upton isn't a bad player. He's hitting .279 with 28 HR's.
I would have liked to see the TIgers get more than a player who has played 1 season of AA.

Are the Angels even "buyers?"
I thought they were middle of the pack in the wild card.
August 31st, 2017 at 2:37 PM ^
There's still a month to go and they're close. May as well go for it. If it doesn't work out, they pay him for a month, he then opts out and no harm no foul as I doubt they're giving up much.
August 31st, 2017 at 2:56 PM ^
They survived for about a month while Trout was on the DL. They are 1 GB the Twins in the WC race who didn't do anything serious to improve their team. The Angels starting pitching has gotten better thanks to mid-season call-up Parker Bridwell, and now Andrew Heaney is healthy. Their main problem is they don't have an ace to rely on for a 1-game wild card. (But the 2002 WC team didn't have an ace, either.)
The bullpen is sorting itself out. Petit and Blake Parker are dominant middle-relievers. Defensively, they are really strong up the middle with Trout and Andrelton Simmons. LF has been a problem with Maybin and Revere sharing time. If Upton joins Trout, Pujols and Kole Calhoun (or is it Cole Kalhoun?) that's a pretty good 2-5 hitters, and Simmons has been having a career year at the plate. Of course, they could just be putting on a show to convince Trout not to leave when he hits free agency.
August 31st, 2017 at 4:48 PM ^
Twins fan here. You say the Twins didn't do anything serious to improve their team. Shit, they dumped players at the end of July after a bad road trip; including their all-star closer Kinsler. Its absolutely stunning to me they are hanging in there and playing their best ball of the year. Plus, they have a lot of players on the DL including Sano.
Luckily, their young outfield is playing really well. The most improved is Buxton, who is on fire - finally.
August 31st, 2017 at 4:51 PM ^
Trout and Upton will be a good combo. Calhoun is statistically about an average hitter though, and Pujols has been garbage all year. But the Angels have a weak offense, and they went out and got a good hitter for a prospect. That's a good thing.
