So he lost it because he wanted to be closer to some Butt?
I just spit out my coffee and I wasn't even drinking any.
DPJ earned the right to have #9 in Perry's absence. Given his druthers, Perry would have kept it. Can't wait to see both #9 and #88 on the field against Florida.
DELIGHTFUL!
It's a big man's number. Here's every #88-

I had no idea, until now, that Bill Freehan also played football at UM.
played football. He was a starter on the basketball team at that time.
Julian Swearingen was a MONSTER when he wore the 8-8.
Umbig11 has posted about this several times: expect Perry to miss two or three games to start the season.
If that's the case, then there's the answer to why DPJ gets #9. He's gonna be on the field in the first series vs Florida.
not necessarily the games 1st series...if adhereing to that practice of guys earning #s via first to play or whoever earns the most snaps or whatever then it could just mean DPJ simply sees the field prior to perry, not that itll be the 1st series or not him being named starter.
silly quibble, i know, but just throwing it out there.
i do love the way harbaugh operates though, the idea of competition in all things, even competing for #s or corner lockers or whatever it may be. and he seems to be a master at incorporating those principles and ideals into every aspect of the program so its unavoidable on a daily basis. he recruits dudes with competition in their DNA and a need to win, guys who must join a program where its all always up for grabs
WILL YOU JUST LET ME ENJOY FANTASIZING ABOUT THE FIRST SERIES AGAINST FLORIDA POTENTIALLY PUTTING 4 WR'S OUT WIDE (DPJ, CRAWFORD, BLACK, MCDOOM), ALL RUNNING VERTICAL ROUTES.
Having your number given to a freshman/rookie is a pretty good punishment. I like it.
Can Chris Evans change his number? 12 seems more fit for a QB than a RB, and 20 and 21* are open I believe.
*Yes I realize Desmond Howard. Biakabatuka was 21.
if it ain't broke, don't break it!
he likes to break everything.
We had a QB that was #98, 12 seems tame.
I pray it never happens again
It was cool for the game. Especially with the result of the game and how well he played.
That should've been the end of that gimmick right then and there.
We've had lots of RBs with numbers in the single digits or teens.
- 12 - Ricky Powers
- 6 - Tyrone Wheatley
- 8 - Chris Howard
- 7 - Chris Floyd
- 3 - Kevin Grady
- 5 - Justice Hayes
- 4 - Brandon Minor
- 2 - Sam McGuffie
- 4 - De'Veon Smith
- 2 - Vincent Smith
Lots of college RBs wear "QB" numbers.
Beat me to it, I was gonna say 12 worked out fine for Ricky Powers. Powers won 3 conference championships, became team captain, and actually had a very similar freshman season to Evans. Evans should probably pass him on the all-time rushing list by the end of his career.
Didn't Powers have a great freshman year and then pretty much get buried in the depth chart behind Ty Wheatley et. al?
Definitely shared time with Wheatley after his freshman year, then Wheat came on more and more each year.
Good news for Evans is that we don't have a Wheatley on the roster. Well, literally we do, but you know what I mean.
Maybe not if O'Maury turns out to be the next Ty!
Gordie Bell #5
Probably the smallest RB who played a lot that I can remember, along with Vincent Smith later.
Yes indeed. I believe the only really rigid numbering rule in the NCAA is that ineligible players on offense (ineligible to receive passes, that is) must be 50-79 and if an additional player in that range is to be in on a play, the referee must be informed. Beyond that, there are various recommendation but nothing firm as far as I know.
All retired numbers have been re-retired. Including 21.
12 is a perfect number for a RB imo
I like 20 for RB. There's been some successful ones with that #
